Sam Phillips Launches “Long Play”
November 25, 2009 by Arieanna
Sam Philips, the artist who wrote and scored music for Gilmore Girls, recently announced the release of a subscription-based service that will give fans a year’s worth of new music – 5 EPs and a full-length album, all digital and downloadable. The service, called the Long Play, launched in November and plans to release music along with bonus content all throughout the year.
Sam has thus far released several singles and two EPs, including ‘Hypnotists In Paris’ and ‘Cold Dark Night,’ a collection of holiday music I’ll be talking about in another post. In addition to music, Sam is releasing other aspects of the creative process including photos, video, audio logs and essays. It’s a great look into the music-making process. I’ve had a chance to check out the project and have nothing but great things to say about it! The format is great, and I love that we get new music all the time. So far, my favorite track is ‘So Glad You’re Here.’
Full subscription details:
- 5 digital EPʼs (high-quality MP3, FLAC and Apple Lossless formats); released every two months starting October 1, 2009
- 1 full-length digital album (high-quality MP3, FLAC and Apple Lossless formats); scheduled for release in the fall of 2010
- 1 Subscribers-only bonus track with each EP and album, plus additional bonus tracks throughout the year
- Bonus audio and video content throughout the year-long project; may include live concert footage, rehearsal tapes, demos, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, etc.
- Exclusive audio and visual oddities
- Membership in the Long Play community with exclusive access to Samʼs journaling of her creative process as well as an exclusive social network of Samʼs fans.
To sign up for the Long Play, which is a $52 subscription, go here. You can also follow Sam on Twitter (and she’s been added to the list of Gilmore Girls actors / artists here).
Happy Thanksgiving from Gilmore Girls News!
November 25, 2009 by Maria Diaz
In honor of American Thanksgiving tommorow night, here is one of the funniest scenes from the Gilmore Girls classic third season episode, a “A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving,” where the popular girls have 4 dinners to choose from!
Arieanna posed the question of which dinner you would most like to go to a few weeks ago and it looked like most of you would go to Luke’s! I would probably go to the Gilmores for food, Sookie’s for a drink, and then Luke’s for some pie. Here’s a hilarious scene of a drunken Sookie talking about all the deep frying going on at her house:
Do You Have Birthday Traditions?
November 25, 2009 by Arieanna
In ‘Happy Birthday, Baby‘, we learn yet another of the special ways that our Gilmore girls celebrate birthdays. In this episode, Rory has used mallomars to spell out “Happy Birthday Lorelai” on the table:
In addition, Rory is trying to plan the world’s biggest pizza for her mom’s birthday. Yes, the Gilmores go all out for the big b-day.
Why do you think they love birthdays so much? Are you surprised that all of Stars Hollow seems to celebrate their birthdays in a bigger way than those of anyone else?
And do YOU have special birthday traditions you do every year? I’d love to know what what they are!

Alexis Bledel’s Big Weekend Out In New York City
November 23, 2009 by Maria Diaz
When we last heard of Alexis Bledels’ (Rory on Gilmore Girls) whereabouts, she was filming “The Conspirator” in Savannah, Georgia much to the excitement of the locals. However, this past weekend, Alexis traded in her period piece dresses for a much chic-er look as she made her way to New York City for several very fun events. In the below photo, she’s at the Alice and Olivia pop-up store opening at fancy boutique SCOOP.
That same night, she went to the WIRED pop-up party, where Jared Eng (aka “Just Jared”) tweeted she thought the music Moby was spinning was “too aggressive“. If that wasn’t enough, on that same night Alexis was photographed on the red carpet at the 25th anniversary of Indochine. Finally, lest you think she took a break, Alexis was spotted heading into the next night’s SNL taping with Gilmore Girls co-star Krysten Ritter!

Krysten Ritter Enjoys A Martini At The Bailey’s Holiday Shop Launch
November 23, 2009 by Maria Diaz
Krysten Ritter (Lucy on Gilmore Girls) was enjoying a frosty martini at the Bailey’s Holiday Shoe Shop Launch in New York City earlier this month. She’s got a good reason to enjoy a drink; per her IMDB page, Krysten has recently completed 4 movies and has another, “Vamps” currently in pre-production! The most high-profile appears to be “Margaret,” a dram starring Anna Paquin, Matthew Broderick and Allison Janney. Unfortunately, the page for the film says it’s “tied up in a legal dispute.”

Why Did Rory Dream of Harvard, not Yale?
November 23, 2009 by Arieanna
In ‘A Tale of Poes and Fire‘, Rory begins one of her classic pro-con lists about going to Harvard vs Princeton vs Yale, though we know Princeton is pretty much out of the running. After the meeting at Yale, I think Lorelai and Rory both know that they need to re-evaluate their assumption that Harvard is the school for Rory.

I’m not really sure why Harvard was “the” school to begin with. Why that dream, that school? Was it just thought “the best” by them? Or was it something else? Did Lorelai in some way sway Rory away from thinking about Yale early on, because her father went there? Wouldn’t it have been nicer to dream of Yale, since it’s so close to home?
Whatever the reason, Lorelai says that if Harvard was meant to be, the list would reflect it. Rory shouldn’t go to Harvard just because she’s always wanted to or because it’s what is expected of her – she should go because it’s right. Things to consider would be location, the program Rory wants, the teachers, and future job prospects. In the end, Yale comes out a winner.

Jared Paladecki Gets Silly At ChiCon 2009
November 22, 2009 by Maria Diaz
Jared Paladecki (Dean on Gilmore Girls) was front and center at ChiCon 2009 last weekend, a convention for fans of his show Supernatural. There were quite a few fan photos taken at the event (which I’ve placed underneath the cut), but the best was this video I found of Jared laughing to a fan question and then getting a little silly poking fun at the fan in question. It’s quite charming and it’s easy to see why fans adore him (besides his dashing good looks).
Were any of you at ChiCon? Let us know if you went in the comments!
Does Paris Have Regrets?
November 21, 2009 by Arieanna
In ‘The Big One‘, Rory gets her “big” envelopes from Harvard and presumably also Yale and another school. However, Paris was not so lucky. First off, who was surprised that Paris didn’t make it into Harvard?
After finding out she didn’t make it into Harvard, Paris has a bit of a meltdown when giving a speech at Chilton. She ends up breaking down not just about Harvard, but about just having slept with her boyfriend, Jamie.
“I’m not going to Harvard, I’m not going to Harvard. I had sex, but I’m not going to Harvard.”
Paris had earlier confided the sex news to Rory, admitting that she thought sex was ‘inevitable’ in a relationship. I’m not sure she feels she had sex for the right reasons. Why do you think she took this step?
Now Paris says she feels like a slut and worries that Jamie won’t love her, now that she’s not a Harvard girl.
“After all the trouble this sex thing has caused me, I had better’ve been good.”
It’s not clear to me which thing upsets Paris more – having sex or not getting into Harvard. What is clear, though, is that Paris isn’t sure of herself or her decisions. Being rejected from Harvard maybe made her feel like Jamie would reject her too. What do you think?

“Glee” Gives A Shout Out To “Gilmore Girls”
November 20, 2009 by Maria Diaz
Gregg Henry, who played Logan’s dad Mitchum Huntzberger on Gilmore Girls, guest starred as Quinn Fabray’s dad on this week’s episode of the new Fox show Glee. This week’s episode seemed heavy on the Gilmore shout-outs, including the cast singing a Paul Anka song “(You’re) Having My Baby“ and according to one of our Twitter friends, Quinn (who is currently pregnant) standing in front of a mirror “screamed young Lorelai.”
Also, did anyone notice that Gregg wore hairplugs on the show? If you’ll remember him in HBO’s Hung, he was pretty bald. On Glee however, he ends up with hair plugs! You can watch the full episode, “Ballad” below:
