Interview with Lauren Graham

August 29, 2005 by Arieanna

On the future of Gilmore Girls: “It’s impossible to say how much longer our show will continue. When you’re involved in something creatively, you want it to last as long as the story tells you it should last.”

On being a love-sick grown up: “I expected Luke and Lorelai to be more like, Goo-goo, ga-ga, Oh honey, mwah-mwah… but, honestly, I think it might be sickening to see them, you know, in bed together. Essentially, that contentious kind of friendship is what [prevails].”

On Rory’s wild ways: “This may sound funny but I think, in a weird way, it’s actually growth for Rory to play around a bit. Just like it’s growth for Lorelai to actually stay in a relationship. I don’t think [they] seem more mature this season, but it is definitely different.”

Luke is embarrassed about the proposal

August 28, 2005 by Arieanna

The start of Gilmore Girls this season picks up where all the drama left off.

“Picking up on the same night as last season’s finale, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Luke (Scott Patterson) begin making plans for their future, but Luke (Scott Patterson) is embarrassed when word spreads that Lorelai was the one who proposed.

Still hurt over Rory’s (Alexis Bledel) decision to drop out of Yale and move in with Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Herrmann), Lorelai tells her parents that they can take care of Rory from now on. Richard hires an old friend and respected attorney (guest star Robert Foxworth, “Falcon Crest”) to help Rory get an easy sentence for stealing the yacht, but the judge gives Rory 300 hours of community service.”

Rory also gets thrown a “felon” party. I wonder how far her ride of rebellion will go.

Rory approved music

August 26, 2005 by Arieanna

This is a little piece about a band that Rory likes and has a poster of in her room - the Pernice Brothers.

“A great pop song has an intangible magic about it. It echoes in your head as if the riff were already there, waiting for someone to make it melody. It’s an effect akin to that old Michelangelo quote about how when he was sculpting, the sculpture was already there and he was just getting it out of the block of marble. Many a musician has been lucky to write a single hook, which is why it’s remarkable and notable that Joe Pernice has spent the past 10 years, whether with the Scud Mountain Boys, the Pernice Brothers, or various side projects writing classic pop songs that have an air of familiarity to them, where they sound like the prettiest song that you’ve never heard.

Then again, the lofty heights of Michelangelo don’t always apply to something as ephemeral as pop music. Really, music can just boil down to the story of boys, girls, and sex, as summed up by Pernice: “Most bad poetry, there’s no chance that it’s going to get you laid. But with bad music, you might. At the end of the day, whether you’re 21 or 19 or 17, you opt for the chance of sex. 19. What am I talking about, 30? Same thing.”

“My ex is 30 and he’s still in two bands,” I add.

“There you go,” answers Pernice. “He’s a bad poet.”

In an April interview, he mentions that his music career started as a side project while out in Amherst, Massachusetts, pursuing his MFA in poetry. He was on track to be an English professor, and mentions that “there was a poet at UMASS, James Tate, who was really encouraging and I saw how he could do it [be a poet and professor] and I thought ‘Wow, you can be a teacher, write new stuff, work for 25 weeks, 35 weeks a year.’ But being a professor was really not my main goal — it was to write and to figure out a way to live.” Speaking of his time in grad school, he says, “I really started to write songs and it’s my medium. It’s the one that speaks, it’s immediate, and it happens for me. There were a lot of bands out in western Massachusetts at the time and it was a pretty vibrant music scene. There was also a lot of crossover between people in the writing program who were also musicians. My main goal was to finish school and I just got into songwriting kind of feverishly and that sort of took the front — I made three records while I was still a student, actually.”

His reputation as a depressive American Morrissey precedes him — while the Pernice Brothers sell a shirt on their site that says “I hate my life” and his Morrissey inspiration extends to the 33 1/3 book he wrote about the Smiths’ album Meat Is Murder — his lyrics can be dour but the music is always achingly pretty. They’ve even received shout-outs on the most musically discerning of television shows The Gilmore Girls, where Alexis Bledel’s Rory has a Pernice Brothers poster in her dorm room.”

Ventimiglia makes Dirty Deeds watchable

August 24, 2005 by Arieanna

Milo Ventimiglia (Jess) is the only thing worth seeing in Dirty Deeds. The movie itself didn’t receive the hottest of reviews - but Milo did!

“An irreverent teen comedy can’t really ask for a better title than “Dirty Deeds.” Too bad it doesn’t deliver the goods. Besides throwing in the requisite bodily fluid and randy sex jokes, the film plays it remarkably safe. No stereotype is too hackneyed and no line is too embarrassingly lame for this pointless foray into the teenage mind.

As preposterous plots go, “Deeds” has a fun enough concept. The Friday before Homecoming, an intrepid (or foolish) West Valley High student will attempt to complete a list of 10 predetermined illegal or mildly shocking tasks within 12 hours.

Within the ledger of losers is one winner: the legendary Duncan Rime, who mysteriously disappeared after achieving his dubious notoriety. Now, jaded senior Zach (Milo Ventimiglia) has been reluctantly pulled into the all-night shenanigans in order to impress honor student Meg (Lacey Chabert) and protect her younger brother…

Ventimiglia has the Herculean task of making the film palatable, which he does to an extent. Of all the things that are wrong, he’s not one of them. “Gilmore Girls” and “American Dreams” fans can swoon over his crooked smile, and he shows more puckish humor than seen previously, especially for the third deed involving a loaf of bread.”

WB reaps success from Gilmore Girls

August 22, 2005 by Arieanna

The WB is on the upswing of releasing show after show of really popular, great shows.

Virtually since its inception, the WB has been associated with polished series geared to teens. “Dawson’s Creek,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “7th Heaven,” “Gilmore Girls‘ and “Smallville’ combined youthful beauty with a deft mixture of comedy and melodrama; the latter three added parent-teen interaction in explorations of key issues affecting their target audience.

Zimbabwe President denounces Rory

August 22, 2005 by Arieanna

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has spoken outwardly against the character of Rory Gilmore in the past season. Apparently, he is quite adamant against some of her actions.

“I’m very disappointed in some of the decisions Rory has been making over the past season,” Mugabe told foreign journalists in Harare. “Rory is an intelligent and sophisticated young woman. However, her knee-jerk reaction to the suggestion by Logan’s father that she may not have all it takes to be a great journalist offers insight into a darker, immature side of her nature. When she skipped off and stole a yacht with that rich jerk from Yale, she broke my heart.” brainsnap

Seriously - is it truly a political matter what a character does on TV? Oh the plus side, it does look as though President Mugabe is a fervent fan of The Gilmore Girls. He’s invested enough emotional attachment into the show to speculate that her perfect childhood has made adulthood difficult, and that he also dislikes Taylor. But, every town needs a busybody, is my opinion.

“In my country, we have ways of dealing with the likes of Taylor,” he warned… Enough is enough, says Mugabe.”I would hold the pistol and execute him myself. That is how such people should be dealt with.”

Whoa.

Ok, yes. Indeed it is a farce. But it had me interested, so I decided to post it here. brainsnap writers are very creative!
