Gilmore Girls aiming for an Emmy this season

by Arieanna on August 28th, 2006

According to The Envelope, The Gilmore Girls may be aiming for that ever-ellusive Emmy this season. Many people were more than upset that Lauren Graham did not get nominated this year, myself included, and that the show has never been recognized. One problem could be the category. Is Gilmore Girls a Comedy or a Drama?

Gilmore Girls has always been submitted for Comedy categories, and that could be the problem. Season 6 was very dramatic, especially in relation to the Lauren Graham scene submitted this year. So can we be surprised that no Emmy comes up if its not categorized properly?

Defining "Girls" as a laffer [comedy] was always Sherman-Palladino’s idea, which was pooh-poohed by many colleagues. Next year they’ll place themselves in the drama lineup. Not a bad idea, unless they’re doing so as a way to explain the show’s failure to nab noms in the past. Come on! Those snubs had nothing to do with category classification. Prior to this year, "Girls" got shunned because those geezer Emmy voters had no idea that the WB was on their cable box. This year, Lauren Graham made the finalist list for best comedy actress, but blew it by submitting a whiny, sulking episode submission to judges. Frankly, she wouldn’t have had any better luck if she’d given it to the drama actress panel. Instead, had she entered her reunion episode with Rory to either the comedy or drama panels, that would’ve gotten her nommed in either. Because that was her best episode…

So the problems are:

  1. Categorize yourself properly
  2. Submit your best episode/scene (duh!)

Do you think switching to drama will help?

I don’t know. I can think of a few top Actors and Shows who got overlooked in the Drama category as well.

I think it’s network snobbery that’s keeping the Girls down more than anything else.

I agree, the shows from the more prestigious networks seem to clean up awards while the so-called teen and family networks get shafted. However, I think Gilmore Girls is more of a dramedy… I mean sure its funny but its not really a sitcom, which is usually the type of comedy that wins Emmys. No idea why Lauren Graham would submit Partings as her episode to a comedy category… it was anything but funny. Maybe a slightly better chance in Drama, but not enough of a contender to win against shows from ABC, CBS, FOX, and HBO
