David Sutcliffe on being hated

by Arieanna on September 25th, 2006

People today put out an interview with David Sutcliffe, who plays Christopher on Gilmore Girls, about his role in the upcoming season - and the ‘hate’ he gets from fans for it. David also talks about his new movie, Hacia.

So, Christopher is back in Lorelei’s life?
I’m in the picture. I think that says it all. I will be around and I will be complicating lives as usual.

How’s everyone getting along on the set?
I have a pretty strong bond with both Lauren and Alexis (Bledel, who plays daughter Rory), which happened kind of instantaneously in the first season. At the same time, there is something lost when you’re there every day. Before, Christopher would show up and it was a bit of an event, everybody knows that sh–’s gonna go down … and now I’m sort of here. So it’s kind of bittersweet in a way.

How are fans reacting to you these days? Are they handling your re-emergence well?
They are intense. And they have strong feelings about how the show unravels. The one thing that most people seem to agree on is that Lorelei and Christopher have a unique chemistry and that shows. But I am kind of a hated man. Even though there are Christopher supporters, they’re in the minority.

You’re going in a different direction on the big screen, playing an FBI agent in Hacia la oscuridad.
It’s a lot of fun to be able to run around with guns and scream and yell and do the kind of FBI-cop kind of stuff, which is different than what I’ve been doing, which is kind of playing the boy-girl thing. Its always fun to kiss the pretty girl, but sometimes, amazingly, you can get bored with that too.

How was it working with America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) in it?
She’s got it. It’s strange to be around a woman who’s that young and bright and who’s got a kind of glow about her. There’s really something going on with her.

How about off the set, what do you do?
I’ve just become obsessed with ballroom dancing. I signed up for the introductory course, which was like a four-week thing. By the end of it, I was hooked. I love it. It’s sort of flirty, but it’s not sexual. I can’t quit until I’ve got it down and I can really dance. I’m there four or five times a week.

So do you think you’ll use your new skill to impress dates?
I am single, but it’s more of a different kind of recreation. It’s nice to be in a community of people who are learning and who are very supportive of each other, and we have these little practice parties. It’s just regular people; there are no celebrities hanging out. I’m not trying to get on Dancing with the Stars.

I saw a preview for tonight’s show and was sad. I’ve been a Lorelai and Luke fan. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to see the show tonight.

I think that Christopher will treat her better than luke, as in be more romantic esp he says to her “your it for me Lor” in the 3rd episode. I think their relationship goes back a long way and he made mistakes growing up and so did lorelei but now wants a chance.
Because if you remember in teh 1st season, he comes back to her and tells her that he wants to be part of her and rory life but she says no telling rory that he is not ready. then during suki’s wedding he comes back to her, only to find out that he is having another child with his stupid ex. So timing hasn’t been right but no matter what their relationship is stronger i think because of it.

Love.. Love.. I love Christopher.. He’s soooo cute!! BUt he wasn’t really around lorelai n’ rory. So it’s a bit confusing 2 decide who’s d best for d gilmore girls, coz :
    - Christopher : He’s rory’s dad
    - Luke : He’s almost always around d gilmore girls, especially when they need him

Aww… poor David on being TV land’s most hated guy…
I agree with him when he says that Lorelai & Christopher have amazing on-going chemistry.
Something Luke & Lorelai lack greatly.

Christopher used to leave me indifferent because he was not really part of the Stars Hollow life, the new life Lorelai had chosen over being married to him after Rory’s conception or, as he callously called her, their “derailment”. So he was more of an annoyance than anything else when he was blowing in and out of the “Girls” lives, but since “Partings” where he clearly took advantage of a very distraught woman in a most selfish way and had the gall to tell her the next day “it was great” while she was clearly in denial of a very traumatic break-up I have the greatest disdain for him. I have to say David Sutcliffe portrays the weasel very well, unfortunately for him that is not exactly a compliment and not a good reference for the future because many fans of the show like myself don’t care to see his face ever again on screen in any capacity. After 14 Christopher-intense episodes - more than half of Season 7 - (and for what? an exercise in futility)I just delight in the recent Christopher-free episodes. The most recent one especially 7-15 showed glaringly that he truly does not belong in Stars Hollow and is not missed at all. I respect the views of those who think that Christopher is the cat’s meow but if he has to be with Lorelai let it be off screen and far far away from Stars Hollow.
