Luke, in his truck, after leaving Lorelai’s. Stuff still packed in the back. He looks pissed, but he has a map. Where is he going?
Elevator opens… he knocks. And then punches Christopher. And turns right around and gets back in the elevator. Says nothing.
Lorelai, drinking coffee. And she gets up, as if she has an idea. Pours a second cup of coffee and waits at Rory’s door to give her coffee. Lorelai made her waffles. She could not sleep. Does not seem Lorelai, hey. First, she has food. Second, since when is she a morning person?
Rory, putting chocolate and syrup and whipped cream and who knows what else onto the waffles.
They speak of the rocket. And Rory tells Lorelai that she’s ok to not be going to London in the summer. That she is proud of Logan for being a grown up, getting into business and whatnot. And she is trying not to pout. But she does, of course. She is totally bummed to not be going to Asia. Has a whole pile of books on her research for Asia. I want Rory to plan my trip, anywhere. And of course, would love her pocketbook too.
Lane called early that morning. Lorelai delivers the message. She’s back from the honeymoon.
So, Luke returns to Stars Hollow. In the back of his truck, supplies to fix his diner. TJ is there to offer his help (cause he’s so handy, right?), Luke is being a bit snarky to him. And TJ mentions getting coffee from "the diner across the street". An open air ‘diner,’ right across the street from the diner. Kirk’s. Even with the coffeeshop logo like Luke’s. And the plaid shirt. Hat. The menu. The no cell phones sign.
Kirk is saying that Luke’s is closed for business, so he started his own diner - to fill a need. And Luke says it’s closed for repairs because someone drove a car through the diner. Kirk then takes Luke aside and tells him to be polite because he’s lucky Kirk did not sue him, for brain damages. Ha! After Kirk destroyed Luke’s diner, it should be the other way around. Then Kirk tries to hire Luke at his diner!!
At the inn. Sookie trying to teach Lorelai how to make sushi. And then they’ll make some meatloaf sushi for Lorelai. Ew. And then Sookie suggests dessert sushi, which Lorelai thinks is genius.
Lorelai then goes over and whispers "I told him" to Sookie, which refers to telling Luke about Christopher. She didn’t want to tell Luke, but she had to tell him. Because she had to say "no" and it was the only way Luke would believe her. She truly does not believe that Luke wants to marry her. That’s sad. I guess she believes actions speak louder than words?
Lorelai says it was one of the most horrible moments of her life. But that she has to be fine.
Rory goes to visit Lane and Zach. Zach is looking good, but totally bitter. He says Mexico sucked. That ‘Pedro’s Paradise’ was not quite a paradise. It was a room in some guy’s apartment. Aw, that sounds horrible! When you go to Mexico, you want beach and sun and comfort. And Zach had some parasite from drinking Mexican water (stupid). And that Lane now has it. Um, yeah, that’s why she’s barfing.
So, Rory goes in to visit Lane. Lane is not feeling like squealing about being married. She had an "I just married that man moment" - oh boy, that sounds horrible. Lane says she’s feeling alright at the moment (um, yeah, it’s not the morning) and they should go for a walk, to talk in private.
Back to Luke and TJ. TJ is trying to suggest a stained glass window. TJ notes Luke is in a "mood" and is getting offended. Luke does apologize, and so TJ then confesses he’s glad to be out of the house. That Liz is really horny when pregnant. And suggests knocking up Lorelai. Poor Luke, this must be torture after that morning. He takes off to ‘get primer’.
Lane and Rory. Lane says that the sex was bad. She thinks sex is horrible. That it’s a media charade. A conspiracy that sex is good for women. She had sex with Zach once, and only once. Rory says it gets better. It gets good. But Lane does not believe her. Lane says that their first time was on the beach, to be romantic. But it was dirty and cold and there were crabs and stressful. But yeah, that was a bad experience. Really, with all that, it would be bad. Lane asks why Rory is not in Asia. And says Rory is lucky - meaning she is not with Logan for the sex.
Lorelai and Luke meet in the street. Luke with primer. Lorelai with bags of stuff. Lorelai says she is not exactly fine. That it’s weird and hard. Luke says he’s fine. That punching Christoper helped. And is surprised that Lorelai’s "boyfriend" had not told her yet? That it’s ok for Lorelai to date. Lorelai says he should take his anger out on her, not on Christopher. Luke says he’s over it, that it’s not a big deal. Lorelai asks, surprised, "that it’s not a big deal?", and Luke responds, yeah, that Lorelai proposed in the first place. There’s more, but you’ll get it in my video clips.
TJ and Luke are back at the diner, putting up primer. They finished the framing, and the windows will go in the next day. TJ is talking about how he likes drinking beer outside or at ice skating rinks. Sure. And then invites Luke to go to some sexy ice skating thing, the Rockettes. Luke says they are busy. TJ pushes. Luke spills that he and Lorelai broke up. TJ goes into a major bear hug. lol. And invites Luke to dinner with Liz.
Rory back home. There is a Buddha. And the whole place is decorated Asian style - a mishmash of all Asian countries. And there is Lorelai in a kimono. And gets Rory into one too. It’s a mini version of Rory’s Asian experience. First they tour to the land of Hello Kitty. Then they will later make sushi. Make origami. And then will do Tai Khi and do a Kabuki play. And they will conclude with some fortune cookies and dessert cookies and some Asian themed videos, such as Mr. Baseball and Bridge Over the River Quai.
Zoom to the dessert section of the night. Talking about there preference for dessert sushis. Using red hots instead of wasabi, good idea! And Lorelai has a "spiritual hunger" for fried ice cream - although she’s not actually hungry. lol. But they have no ice cream.
Christopher calls. Answering machine picks up. And the message lightly drops of the "other night", something Rory was unaware of. She keeps repeating "you slept with dad" and asks if that is why she broke up with Luke. Lorelai says no. Rory probes about when it was. And Lorelai admits it was that night. Rory is pissed off that it was so fast. And is being sarcastic about how fast she went over there. Lorelai says it was nothing, that she made a mistake. Rory says it was a big thing, not just dying your hair the wrong color. Rory is mad, since things with her and Christopher were finally good, and this ruins it all. Rory is pissed that Lorelai did not tell her, and was doing all these things for her, the Asia thing, while treating Rory as if she were a child. And that she should not drown her sorrows and her heartache by sleeping with her father. And Rory then storms out.
Luke and TJ arrive to Liz’s place for dinner. Liz is looking very pregnant. TJ keeps talking about sex, as if everything were a sexual comment. Liz says she’s ready to talk. Luke says he’s not ready. Liz asks if it was Anna. Luke says no. And says he wants to drop it.
Rory goes to visit Lane again. That she felt like karate chopping her mom. Lane is leaning against the bed. Lane is pregnant. Rory says "wow" as if it’s a big, good thing. Lane has not told anyone yet, not even Zach. She is mad that bad sex and cheap Mexican condoms led to this. And she is mad. That she started barfing at the doctor’s office, in a scared horrible way, not a pregnant way. Lane says she doesn’t have her act together yet. She is not calm or organized yet. Not ready to be a mom. Not perfect yet. Rory says she does not need to be perfect to be a mom.
Lane admits to being scared. Rory tries to encourage her. That she has nine months to prepare. That she is way ahead of some mothers - Britney Spears, Michael Jackson. They then laugh at lots of stupid celebrity baby names. Like Blanket. Or Apple.
Liz’s dinner is a bit late. Mmm, tuna loaf. Ew. Served with the appetizer of Jello cups. lol. Liz is so cute. Who can’t love Liz? Anyway, Liz is saying that breaking up with Lorelai is not surprising. That Luke and Lorelai were never in synch. They never really moved in together. That they were in two different places, living lives not together. And totally craps on Luke for not telling Lorelai about April. That it’s not how a healthy couple acts. That they were never on the same plane at the same time (this sounds like what Rosenthal said about Luke & Lorelai). Luke says they didn’t break up for some space/time thing. They broke up because they were not right for each other. They wanted to be together, but it didn’t work out.
Liz’s dinner is still cold. Oven is broken. Luke decides to go to the store to grab some food to make them a home cooked meal. At the store, who does he run into, but Lorelai (what store is this, btw?). Apparently Lorelai went there to avoid Doose’s (where Luke could be). Gotta be fate.
Lorelai calls out Luke for what he said. Luke says he was just really mad. That he won’t be mad, eventually. Lorelai says she was a jerk too. And they seem to mutually apologize. Luke says it wasn’t Lorelai’s fault, it wasn’t his fault. That they were just not meant for each other. That Lorelai is meant for someone like Christopher. And that they should stop fighting it. Luke then says that Lorelai should just go back to being Lorelai, and let Luke pour her coffee.
Lorelai makes her exit, then we zoom to her at home, crying on the couch in an upright fetal position. Rory walks in. And, without a word, knows what to do, To hold her mom and just be there.

[…] Alright, so a big theme in “That’s What You Get, Folks, For Makin’ Whoopee” was about fate. What was meant to be. And a lot about emotional conflict about where love is for Luke and Lorelai. […]

i thought this week’s episode was great. It seemed to have that old gilmore charm that we ahc\ve grown to know and love (Kirk’s, the asina paradise) with a few more grwon up twists (Lane’s preganat) i thought this week’s show was a refreshing change from all the dark and gloomy episodes that have been airing lately. I also loved how the show enede with the mother daughter duo together no the couch. It just screamed classic GG moment.
