The elopement and other Gilmore Girls spoilers

by Arieanna on October 24th, 2006

Michael Ausiello has spilled out some more beans on the upcoming (*spoilers*) Lorelai and Christopher elopment, and other show news in a fabulous new long spoiler report, the outcome of an interview with David Rosenthal:

Lorelai and Christopher will — pause for dramatic effect — spontaneously tie the knot (read: elope) during a romantic trip to Paris on Gilmore Girls next month. Nov. 14 to be exact…

Ausiello: Now that the secret is out, are you worried about a backlash from Luke and Lorelai fans?
David Rosenthal: No, I’m not worried about any backlash. I’m really excited about the story lines this year. I think it’s gonna make for a really interesting season and I hope the fans will stay with us and follow Lorelai through this journey she’s on.

Ausiello: Luke and Lorelai fans are not going to be thrilled with this development.
Rosenthal: I am a Luke and Lorelai fan as well. This is not an anti-Luke and Lorelai development. Luke and Lorelai are right now on separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated. They’re still very much a part of each other’s lives and will be in the future in significant and profound ways.

Ausiello: How does this elopement figure into Lorelai’s journey?
Rosenthal: I think it’s just a natural outgrowth of what’s been going on with Lorelai this season and her reaction to last year and everything that happened with Luke. Obviously, [all the] episodes [leading up to the elopement] haven’t aired yet, but I think you’ll see their relationship building over the next [several] episodes. Christopher and Lorelai have a very deep, long history. This isn’t just some guy in her life. This is the father of her only child and a man who she’s known for virtually her entire life; they’re very connected. I think people will see sides of Christopher that they’ve never seen before. It’s a more complex relationship than people are used to seeing between Lorelai and Chris. The times before when Christopher and Lorelai have gotten together, something has always gotten in the way — whether Chris wasn’t ready, or Lorelai wasn’t ready, or Chris was having a child or whatever it was. Things have really kept them from exploring their relationship and their connection and what they have together. I felt like this year was really an opportunity to give them a chance to do that. And, I gotta say, they’re great together. It’s been really fun working with them.

Ausiello: This isn’t really a traditional, “Let’s run off to Paris and elope” kind of thing, is it?
Rosenthal: It is not. But I don’t want to spoil anything more than that. But no, they do not run off to Paris [intending] to elope. That is not why they go to Paris.

Ausiello: Can you talk a little about the aftermath of this event?
Rosenthal: It’s a very small town, so obviously Lorelai coming back with a husband — and not the husband they were expecting her to have — will have a profound impact on everybody.

Ausiello: How does Luke find out?
Rosenthal: I don’t want to spoil that. But that will not happen off camera; I can promise you that.

Ausiello: There are only so many times the Christopher card can be played. Is it fair to say that if it doesn’t work out this time, it’s not going to work out?
Rosenthal: Absolutely. It’s all or nothing.

Ausiello: Are you writing the show as if this is the last season?
Rosenthal: No. We have an arc for the season. We have a plan for 22 episodes. If it ends up being the last season, I’m very comfortable with where we end up and I think it will be a really satisfying end to the series. But it’s also a start of a new beginning for next season. I’d be excited to do another season, but I think that what we have planned for the end of the season could certainly wrap up the series if that’s what’s called for.

Ausiello: If this is the last season, would you be open to the idea of Amy coming back and being involved in that last episode?
Rosenthal: Uh… yeah, of course.

Ausiello: But it’s nothing that has been talked about.
Rosenthal: No. That’s not something that we’ve gotten into or even discussed at this point. The last time Amy and I talked, she wished me luck and I thanked her and told her I hoped she would continue to be proud of the show.

Ausiello: You haven’t heard anything from her in terms of feedback?
Rosenthal: I have not.

Ausiello: There’s a rumor going around that Richard’s going to die.
Rosenthal: No! Absolutely not! I promise you! No one’s going to die in Stars Hollow. Nobody.

Ausiello: What’s next for Rory and Logan?
Rosenthal: Deepening and intensifying. They’re going to be dealing with more adult issues and more adult problems. And while that will create some conflict, it will also give them an opportunity to grow closer as a couple. But there’s a question of, "Is this the kind of relationship that Rory sees going the distance, or is this just the college boyfriend?" Those are the questions that are going to come up for Rory this year. But there’s a lot in store for those two.

Ausiello: Marty’s coming back next month. Can you say anything about how he’s going to be reintroduced?
Rosenthal: We have a cool way of bringing him back into the show. Kind of a surprising way, which I don’t want to spoil. It brings up interesting issues for Rory and Logan, and I think it’s a nice story arc for Rory. We’re happy to have Mr. Wilcox back on the show; he’s really terrific.

Ausiello: How long will he be around?
Rosenthal: He’ll be in and out throughout the season.

Ausiello: Might there be another marriage this season?
Rosenthal: God, I can’t make any promises. I don’t know at this point.

Ausiello: So it’s possible?
Rosenthal: Yeah, it’s possible there could be another wedding this season.

If Lorelai and Chris are getting married, I actually want to see it. I do not want for them to go to Paris and just come back married. Lauren and David has a sizzeling chemistry together, so let’s see what they can do.

YAY!! I’m excited now. I really am. It sounds like Rosenthal has the storyline well in hand and I think he knows what he’s doing. I cannot wait for the season finale now!! Whatever happens, it will be a NEW BEGINNING, a point where the show could end completely or could continue into another season. That is really hard to do!!

I am glad they are developing Chris and Lorelai’s relationship. I am a hard-core Luke/Lorelai fan, but I think it’s great that they’re finally adding a depth to Chris’ character that we haven’t seen before. I absolutely cannot wait to see the reaction from Stars Hollow when they get back from Paris, especially Sookie’s, Rory’s, and Luke’s. Man, that will cause fireworks.

Thank you Rosenthal for seemingly redeeming yourself. I’m excited to see where this is going now, as long as the show stays Gilmore-Girlsy.

I still feel weird that Amy isn’t in on it any more. It feels like the magic isn’t quite there at the moment. I dunno, maybe it’ll pick up after a while.

I am, however, excited that they are exploring the Chris-relationship. It’s been an unresolved thing for six years, it’s about time! It completely fits the plot as a whole.

This interview made my day! Best part of it by far:

This is not an anti-Luke and Lorelai development. Luke and Lorelai are right now on separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated.

I have been waiting for that confirmation! I am looking forward to tonight’s episode so much more now that I can rest easy knowing that L&L will eventually significantly cross paths and, fingers crossed, get back together. The show is in good hands, I think. Now let’s get this elopement over with! :)

Wow, Dave Rosenthal really knows how to put fans minds at ease. I’m glad to hear that he respects Luke and Lorelai, and that this is just part of Lorelai’s journey

I dont like that Chris and Lorelai are eloping, i love Luke and Lorelai. But Chris is Rory’s dad and i wouldn’t be too upset if him and Lorelai end up together. I personally think Luke is meant for Lorelai and at the end i hope either they return to being friends or even better get back together, but whatever happens, happens.

I’m a hardcore Luke and Lorelai fan, but I’m glad that they are developing Chris’ character. He’s not just anyone - he’s Rory’s father and Lorelai’s High School sweetheart. Sure, he’s not perfect - but he has grown up alot. Personally, I like the way the story is going. For 6 years, the Chris/Lorelai storyline has been underdeveloped - there was never really any closure.

Anyway, I’m glad I read this interview. It seems that DR also feels that Luke and Lorelai belong together, but they both need to go on their seperate journeys.

I’m generally against Lorelei/Christopher as a couple. And this interview is kind of putting out that little flicker of hope that somehow Luke and Lorelei would find each other again.

HOWEVER, after tonight’s episode, I’m glad they brought a little reality to the Chris/Lorelei relationship by introducing the slightest smidgen of baggage into the relationship. I was getting annoyed that they were all “Happily Ever After” when she had just broke up with Luke. I’m annoyed at myself that I’m accepting this new relationship…DAMN THOSE CUNNING SCREENWRITERS.

Hahaha I feel ya..yea the fight was very believable and I loved the facial expressions at dinner. I’ll save my comments for the recap post, but I still have hope for L&L.

Hmm, Rory and Logan college relationship or the distance? WELLL SHE SAID IN SEASON SIX in a Vineyard Valentine that she felt that Logan could be the ONE. Hopefully DR also thinks Logan could be the ONE. And Chris and Lorelai, huh, november 14? That gives a heck of a lot of time to divorce and get back with luke for all the jj fans.. I’m still indicisive about Lorelai’s relationships

There was only one good line in last night’s episode, made by Sookie - “Christopher is not Luke.” Chris makes me puke. He has done nothing to deserve Lorelai - he has no integrity. He took her to bed knowing she was engaged. Hello!!! That is weasel behavior. He deserves nothing. Luke is the one who carried Lorelai’s horoscope in his wallet for years. And DR has obviously never had a long-distance relationship. Rory would have been crying harder after Logan left the 2nd time, not going to her the Gilmore’s for a fun night. Bah!

Luke was an absolute idiot in Season 6 and it made me sad, but Lorelai and Christopher getting hitched makes me feel ill. Its almost as bad as Luke and Nicoles insane marriage.

All i can say is I hope i’m reading the right things in the quotes below, because the only outcome that is going to make me happy is if it doesn’t work with Christopher and Luke and Lorelai sort themselves out and end happily ever after - so PTB - end season 7 like that or get renewed and go on because if GG ends any other way it will be just as bad as the Joey/Pacey rubbish ending of Dawson’s Creek.

“Is it fair to say that if it doesn’t work out this time, it’s not going to work out?
Rosenthal: Absolutely. It’s all or nothing.”

“Ausiello: Luke and Lorelai fans are not going to be thrilled with this development.
Rosenthal: I am a Luke and Lorelai fan as well. This is not an anti-Luke and Lorelai development. Luke and Lorelai are right now on separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated. They’re still very much a part of each other’s lives and will be in the future in significant and profound ways.”

[…] I’m writing this post more out of duty, and don’t have too much to say, because I felt this episode was basically filler. We got a little bit of doubt instilled in both Rory and Lorelai’s relationships, but nothing major. Rory finds out Logan has a beautiful co-worker, instilling a bit of jealousy. Lorelai and Christopher have a disagreement about Christopher’s daughter GiGi. It’s all a set-up for a trip to Paris in a future episode (spoiler ahead). Now if we could get Paris Gellar in Paris, that would have possibilities. […]

Apparently the Christmas episode will be a big one.

“NEW - ‘…something *big* happens between Luke and Lorelai. St. Nick might bring more than fruitcake this year’”

So this could be good or bad… I’m thinking something good, but what could St. Nick be bringing?? Hmmm… At least they finally interact again. It’s weird with Lorelai avoiding Luke.

    Chemistry?
There is no chemistry between these two, there is awkward moments, and a history of hurt between these two that makes it obvious they are not the match on the program.

Luke is and has always been Lor’s match - he has been the one constant man in her life, through the good, the bad and the ugly. He gave her a shoulder to cry on after every failed relationship AND brought her winter when he knew it was the only thing to cheer her up.

Has Luke made mistakes? Yes, no one is perfect. But I’m more mad at Lor - who has suddenly become without fault? - for racing out to sleep with Christopher because Luke wouldn’t jump to her tune.

I have been a faithful fan since the very first episode - this cruel joke the writers are playing has got to end. Put Christopher back in his place- as Rory’s often missing in action father, and Lor’s lesson on how a relationship should not go - and bring Luke and Lor back together - make her grovel for it too, because men like Luke are to hard to find in real life, for our favorite fictional character to be throwing him away so carelessly.

Random thought: I watched The Notebook tonight and it reminded me SO much of the Luke/Lorelai/Christopher triangle. And that made me happy, because if we liken Lorelai to Ally and Luke to Noah, it’s very clear where this show is heading. Does anyone else see this connection? I think you have to watch the movie with Gilmore in mind for it to make sense…try it :)

And where is the Christmas spoiler? Which previous page? THANKS!

Originally, Gilmore Girls was a throwback to a style that was common in stage plays of the 1930’s - it had three central characters (Lorelai, Rory and Emily) and all of the other characters were just part of the scenery - and the objective was to develop portraits of those three and their relationships, primarily through fast paced, funny dialog. The story line was barely material. Having lunch in a shopping center was a perfectly adequate story line. Unfortunately, it has now degenerated into an ordinary soap opera in which the “scenery” now talks like real people and the story line is all that matters.

I think people were ridiculously stupid for knocking DR in the beginning. Look at your facts people, DR wrote multiple episodes when the Palladino team was still working on. Plus, if people weren’t told that Amy and Dan weren’t going to be here anymore, you couldn’t tell a differance. People need to realize that even though Amy created the show, it doesn’t mean she was the only one who ever wrote or directed it. Dave has been doing a great job 6th season and 7th season, even BEFORE he did this interview! *gasp* yes, believe it people. All you spoiler freaks out there should also know that DR is a big fan on Luke/Lorelai too, so trust in him. By the end of all of this, all fans should be happy. Not because it ends exactly how all fans want it to, that would be impossible, but because we all like Lorelai and Rory and the show is well acted, produced, directed, and written, so even if you hate who both girls end up with, just be happy that this great show with it’s great team is out there to be enjoyed. And seriously, Chris can’t be in it forever if this doesn’t work out now, so all fans should hope for the best and just watch every eppie.
