Gilmore Girls Recap: 7.06 “Go Bulldogs!”

by Arieanna on November 7th, 2006

Episode Name: Go Bulldogs!
Episode Number: 7.06
Air date November 7, 2006

Lorelai calling Emily, pretending as if she were on an answering machine, while Emily is trying to yell into the phone at the other end, thinking it’s broken. Then cuddles with Christopher.

Lorelai listening to a "learn French by tape", only to put on a French accent to her English instead. Cute. Christopher comes in with cafe au lait and croissants - pre-Paris food. Disses Lorelai’s once-per-month mail opening. So cute.

Invitation to Parents Weekend at Yale. Lorelai thinks it’s for lame parents whose kids don’t invite them over. Chris thinks it’s cute. Plus, it’s a good excuse to be a couple together being parents. Rory (in a really horrid airline stewardess outfit) calls and discusses the lameness of Parents Weekend. Not the most fun dialogue.

Luke sending April off to school, making sure she has everything… except he forgets to get her to take the lunch he just made her. Then Kirk starts to go off on how Lulu is smothering him. Um, he is acting like a baby, so of course he’s being babied. April returns to grab her lunch.

Sookie and Michel classic banter at the Inn. Deciding on who is in charge when Lorelai is in Paris - Sookie wins that one. A new local farmer comes in to deliver Sookie some free veggies as a sample to drum up business. She tries to decline the free basket even (Jackson is her supplier), but keeps it in the end.

Luke is picking up April at the swimming pool but makes small talk with the swim coach - Susan Bennett - in the mean time. She doesn’t look like I expected her to. The coach manages to wrangle Luke into taking swim lessons since he doesn’t know how to swim. This cracks April into a mad set of giggles. She is much more comfortable with Luke now - calls him Dad not Luke, did you notice?

Chris and Lorelai at the Parents Weekend. Holding hands. And there is the "Go Bulldogs!" reference - the Yale Bulldogs - an overly bubbly student roars it out. Chris places his name tag in the center of his chest, like a Superman "S" - plus, it says "Rory Gilmore’s father Chris" - so cute! Lorelai’s says "Zymph."

Swim lessons. ooh, a tattoo. Anyway, Luke is trying to blow bubbles underwater. Pretty tense. I guess it is rather freaky if you don’t swim. The swim coach then starts flirting and invites Luke to call her for dinner. He seems good with that.

Back at Yale, a whole mountain of donuts in the lounge. Yum. Parents get good food. And then some other parents try to push their son to Lorelai since he’s a writer on the paper and they want to chum to Rory’s parents. So pathetic. Arg, Emily is there! Lorelai confronts her for being there.

"A grandparent is a type of parent. A grand piano is a type of piano, is it not?" - Emily

Richard is there as well. Apparently it’s been a tradition of theirs to attend Parents Weekend. Felt it was their obligation, that Lorelai would never do it. Until now. And they have scheduled a dinner with Rory already - I guess that’s why Chris and Lorelai got stuck with only the lunch with Rory. Lorelai seems not only annoyed but hurt.

Lorelai and Christopher escape to a boring lecture on astrophysics. During which Lorelai complains about the "booby prize" that is lunch. And texts Rory "you little rat" for not saying anything about her grandparents being there. Whole text conversation going on. Lorelai suggests lunch at the same place where she knows Emily & Richard want to take Rory for dinner. lol. And oh goodness, Chris asks a question. A good one at that. Smart guy.

Sookie is using up the free veggies, trying not to feel guilty about it.

Kirk is planning on dumping Lulu! And thanks Luke for it! For being an independent guy, an example for others. Luke tells Kirk he’s an idiot and will kick his ass if he says anything mean to Lulu. Good stuff.

Chris and Lorelai sneak into the Yale Daily as Rory is finishing up her meeting with the writers. Proud parents. Chris decides to invite everyone out for lunch, trying to be the "cool Dad." Lorelai tries to practice her French on the waiter. lol. Chris is being a little uncool, inviting Rory’s friends to a ski vacation. That’s weird. These aren’t even her friends, just Paris. Rory does admit it’s weird.

A story breaks, a political protest and Rory gathers up her peeps to go cover the story to get it into the edition that day. They may be drunk, but they nonetheless have to work. They’ll all have to die creme brulee virgins ;)

April and Lane are playing chess, Lane being over to babysit as Luke goes out for a date with Susan the swim coach. Lane is squirming a bit - pregnancy bothering her? Lane manages to wrangle April to play Boggle instead.

Luke and Susan on their date. Ew, she’s doing that baby voice. They are at a vegan restaurant. Luke is healthy, but not that healthy. Susan asks who would play Luke in a movie, he seems a little creeped out. She is a little creepy, actually. Talking about "the ex" and making odd snaps and flirting eyes and is just plain weird. Ew. No wonder Luke needs to drink.

Lorelai is happy that she "won", since the dinner with the grandparents was cancelled. Chris whines about not being superdad. About failing Rory tonight, getting her staff drunk. He feels guilty about not being there for her when she was a child, when she needed him, and wants to make it up to her. Lorelai pacifies him saying Rory will probably have some crisis they can handle together in the future.

And there is the awaited appearance of the Whiffs (the Whiffenpoofs) - the real Yale a cappella group. They sound good!

Sookie gets praise for her best ratatouille ever - was it the super good veggies? The non-Jackson veggies? Jackson makes his untimely entrance and Sookie tries to cover up the "evidence." While she gets her purse, Jackson tries to sneak a taste of the ratatouille. Sookie pretends it’s horrible and takes it to the sink.

Luke gets out of his truck at the diner and waves to Kirk and Lulu, who seem fine together now. April is up watching tv, Lane is sleeping. Luke did not like his vegan meal. And says that Susan will remain just "coach Bennett" then goes in for some pizza. Good choice. Luke and April look cute together on the couch. Happy, comfortable.

Yale Daily that night. Lots of drunk writers, some even passed out. Chris and Lorelai bring in all-nighter-supplies. Coffee and donuts.

Go Rory! Payback, big time. Rory "slipped" that Chris and Lorelai were free to Emily and Richard when she cancelled and now they are obliged to go to dinner at the same restaurant, with the parents, again. Ouch.

Well Chris trying to make up for the last 22 years was kinda funny and kinda sad at the same time. I am so gald that the swim teacher and Luke didn’t work out. She’s not his type at all. In fact she was very annoying. I loved that April called Luke dad. That was so cool. They need to have a good relationship. By the way does anyone know if Luke knows that Lane is pregnant? Anyway, this episode was pretty cool, although I’m not digging this L&C thing. It is too weird and can only lead to trouble and she will get hurt again.

Ok this is going to be very harsh. This was about the WORST episode of Gilmore Girls I have ever seen!! What the crap?? It was NOT funny, NOT fast, and NOT Gilmore. We hardly saw anything of Rory, who wasn’t even her Rory-self because all her dialogue was bossing around her news staff and being uncomfortable at the stupid dinner that Chris decided to invite them all to. Agggh! Chris!! What the heck?!?! Since when does Lorelai completely condone his lack of presence for the past 22 years?? When he was all “Now I see what all I missed when I wasn’t around” Lorelai was pretty much “Oh, you know what, you didn’t REALLY miss anything blah blah blah.” I’m sorry, but when that subject has come up before she has been either harsh or “snooze you lose” about it. She has NEVER said “We’re in this together” either!! Where has the original Lorelai who was funny and quippy gone?? Obviously she has been left behind in past seasons because this season is rediculous… the dialogue has lost it’s charm, at least especially in this episode. But, yay, we finally see LuLu again, but Kirk wants to break up with her?? Noooo!! I’m glad Luke talked some sense into him (and while he was doing so, it seemed as though he was chiding himself for letting someone -i.e. Lorelai- walk away from him, a sign that he really doesn’t believe his whole “we’re just not right for each other” theory). ANYWAY, I really thought I was going to be OK with this whole C/L thing and let it play out, but no more. And where was Logan? Nowhere to be found. Not even a phone call!! And poor Luke, how could he have even tried to go out with the swim coach?? Eww! I’m very glad that was a one-time deal. I’m getting sick of the plot outline, even though I want to somehow bring L/L back together, it REALLY doesn’t need to be the ENTIRE FOCUS of the show to the point where it shuts out the rest of the amazing sidelines that have developed over the years. Way too much C/L time on screen. And it wasn’t funny. It was annoying. The whole accapella thing, “nerd alert!!”, the trip to the French Restaurant, ugh. Boring… I was so disappointed after this show- like I had wasted an hour of my time. My optimism for this season has been seriously lowered.

AGREE AGREE AGREE!! Absolutely TERRIBLE episode.

Unlike some, I thought the witty dialogue was one of the better ones since the first two. I thought episodes 3-5 were kind of lame because of Lorelei/Chris. They have kind of become the focus of the show as of late. We need more Paris storylines, we need more Lane and the band, even if she is pregnant, I just want to see the house they live in. And where is Mrs. Kim! I miss her.

I also picked up the bitter vibes from Luke when he was yelling at Kirk. I think Kirk inadvertantly touched a nerve with Luke because he kept saying how awesome it must be that no one is looking out for Luke and no one cares when he gets home etc. etc. basically saying in Luke’s head “You’re right, I don’t have anyone in my life who cares for me anymore, I used to, Lorelei was there for me, but now I have no one in my life.” hence, he goes on a tyrade about how lucky Kirk is to have a woman that cares for him and he threatens to break every bone in Kirk’s body if he dumps Lulu.

Despite some mockery of the April plotlines and the whole Luke being a dad bit, I still find it endearing. It’s nice to see that the two characters are very comfortable around each other and they can just “hang” as opposed to last year when Luke was trying to set her up at a table with crayons lol!

I generally found Chris more annoying than usual. I can deal with him when he’s normal, but he gives me a migraine when he starts feeling insecure about not being there for Rory. And quite frankly, I think he’s missed out on so much that Rory seems to be beyond needing him anymore. She really treats him like he’s a man that her mom is dating as instead of a dad. Which is kind of sad for Chris, but still satisfying. Keep in mind, despite the fact that he was practically absent her entire childhood, he’s also majorly screwed up when she was in highschool and college. In season two he runs out on them, even when he made a promise to his then only daughter that he was around to stay. And it hurts her. In season 5 she basically tells him to stay the f*** away from Lorelei because he will screw up everything between her and Luke, whom I believe she actually loves, maybe not like a father, but a father-figure. And then at the wedding vow renewal ceremony he gets plastered and basically screams at Lorelei and Luke that Lorelei and he are meant for each other.

I don’t care what you say, that stuff stays with Rory here, and it’s kind of apparent in Season 7 that she has distanced herself somewhat from her dad. She may have forgiven him, but that doesn’t mean she has forgotten.

It’s also why I think Lorelei and Chris aren’t going to make it. He isn’t very mature as a person or a father, or a husband for that matter. Lorelei is childish enough on her own, hell, she sleeps with Chris literally two or so hours (however long it takes to drive to Boston from CT) after she leaves Luke. But that’s why he’s not good for her. She needed Luke’s stability and maturity to be a better adult and person. And in contrast, he needed her witty, childish antics to keep his spirit young. But when Chris is more immature then Lorelei is, well that’s saying something. That is why I can seem the thunder clouds comin’

Lorelei has made a past comment about seeing Luke swimming in the lake in Star’s Hollow… the one he pushes Jess into… yet now he doesn’t know how to swim??? Also, he’s really into the outdoors and camping… and he can’t swim? I know I am missing a more obvious reference which indicates Luke being able to swim…. argh.

BTW: Where’s GiGi? How is it that single dad Chris can be away from her so often? Is he REALLY that worried about being a bad dad?

I’ve been trying to post on this for TWO days so I’m testing it now on a diff computer to see if it works…

And it DOES, finally! :) Prepare yourself for a long post…

I have never been more dissappointed in Gilmore Girls. I support their every move- bad plot turns, stupid lines, and even the whole Lorelai sleeping with Chris thing. All of it I could stomach (kinda) because I knew the writers were brilliant and knew what they were doing but THIS EPISODE WAS ABSOLUTELY terrible, tasteless and far, far, far from the Gilmore Girls I love.

First of all, the writing was just awful. The “funny” lines seemed contrived, something we rarely ever see in Gilmore Girls. If I had to hear the words/phrases, PROVOST, A CAPPELLA or NERD ALERT one more time, I would have thrown my remote at the television. Come on Rosenthal, if you have learned anything at all from APS it’s that GG’s magic lies in its writing- if you can’t imitate the humor, leave it out?! Don’t force it.

Lorelai is seeming increasingly out of character. In season 6 I understand her lack of Lorelai-ness, as there were reasons behind it (not wanting to upset Luke, etc.) Now? What’s up with her unusual amount of immaturity? Or her acceptance of Christopher’s 16 year absence in Rory’s life? Does anyone else think she seems almost haughty these days? There is something fake about her- I can’t pinpoint it. But she is different, and she is out of character- I miss the Lorelai who was wacky and crazy but wore her emotions on her sleeve. And Chris? Super annoying. I’ve always liked him (not in the Lorelai and Chris together sort of way, just him as a person) but he is getting on my last nerve. And his “attempt to win Rory’s affections” by asking her friends to dinner stunt was, um, like six years too late? That plot line might have worked in season 1 or 2 but 7? Are you kidding me? And RORY had no Rory-ness in this episode? Yes, we know she is editor-in-chief, and we know she does her job well. Nothing new, folks. Move on, please.

And how unrealistic is it that Lorelai and Luke have yet to have a big/surprising interaction? Where on earth is she getting her coffee every morning? If they aren’t going to “show” that, at least mention it? I’ve accepted the whole being over him thing (on the surface), but it is completely weird that they don’t interact at all.

The swim coach was ugly. Sorry if that’s rude, but the least they could have done if they were going to take the whole Luke goes on a date route is send him off with a gorgeous girl? The whole thing was played out very poorly.

But, speaking of Luke, he is my shining light through all this bad writing/bad plot. I absolutely love his interactions with April, and I think the are VERY authentic. My favorite, favorite part was when he was eating pizza with her at the end and looked at her and patted/hit her kind of playfully. So cute and so real!

Umm you would think GG and The CW would know better than to call next week’s episode The Proposal? Is there really anyone looking forward to it? I’m certainly not…they better title the L&L reunion episode The Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For. Grrrr.

I will never stop loving GG and I will never stop watching- that’s not what a true fan does. But I am truly dissappointed in this episode and its writers. I am hoping for some turnaround, and quickly.

Ok last but not least, DA, I just want to say you ALWAYS say everything that I feel and I always look forward to reading your stuff! :)

Thanks, Tara Ashley! I’m glad we’re on the same page :) And I definitely agree with you: The swim coach was ugly and it was so weird seeing Luke take her out!! Yuck!! But I am very glad that his and April’s relationship has been alot less awkward and it’s so cute to see them together.
I’m also hoping for a turnaround very soon; I really don’t want to feel like I wasted my time watching it every week, but I’m not going to stop watching because I want to know what happens!

I agree that Lorelei’s acting fake. I think she’s trying to fake herself out a little too. It seems like she has to convince herself that she’s over Luke and that Christopher is the one for her. But you can kind of see that she has to “convince” herself of this.

To night was it for me with Gilmore Girl’s. My hope’s for Luke and Lorelai getting back together ended to night, When I saw the look on Luke’s face when he noticed her wedding band. I truly hate the way the writers have change everything. At first I thought Luke & Lorelai would get back together, and he would forgive her for sleeping with Chris of the same night of their break up, but to ask him to forgive her for marring Chris is way too much. We have watch Luke & Lorelai long for one another from the first show. It has always been Luke & Lorelai, He was the one there watching Rory grow up. No matter what happen with Lorelai or Rory, Luke was always the one that came running to the rescue or too give his shoulder to cry on, and Lorelai to him. When she needed a loan to buy the Dragon Fly, Who did she go to for the loan? Luke that’s Who! Chris was always a heart ache and that’s all. Remember Rory’s graduation from high school, Who was right there with Lorelai, crying none the less? Luke Not Chris. When Rory lost her virginity, Luke was the one who was mad and wanted to jump on the guy, where was Chris? It’s seem’s to me that Rory has always had the two dad’s. But none the less Luke loves both Lorelai and Rory, And who really cares what Emily and Richard think or who they like, they like no one that is beneath their standards and that’s money honey! And nothing else. If Luke had came from a Social back ground they wouldn’t have a problem with him. But on the other hand they knew Lorelai and Luke belong together, that’s why they bought them a house. So tell me who was meant to be.
