Gilmore Girls Recap 7.11 “Santa’s Secret Stuff”

by Arieanna on January 23rd, 2007

Episode Name: "Santa’s Secret Stuff"
Episode Number: 7.11
Air Date: January 23, 2007

Lorelai is peeking out her window, and cutie Paul Anka is in a chair. And, there she is. Rory pulls up in her car. Lorelai runs down the stairs and GiGi and Chris get excited. Lorelai rants about how Rory would not let her pick her up at the airport, despite the fact that Rory’s car was at the airport.

Chris and GiGi come out to welcome Rory. GiGi latches on to Rory’s leg and Chris makes a joke about Rory driving on the wrong side of the road, even though Lorelai just made the same joke.

Rory is sad that the Christmas lights are gone, but Lorelai promised that they would save Christmas, so she didn’t put them up. But Lorelai spots Christmas presents from Logan - earrings - and thinks she smells Christmas cookies on Rory. So Rory did some Christmas, but Lorelai did not. No tree, no presents, no Christmas. Rory promises for any pre-real accidental Christmas celebrating. Cute.

Chris is bringing in not one Christmas tree, but three. Of different sizes. Not the nicest looking trees. After all, it’s a little after Christmas. I’d call them Charlie Brown trees to be sure. Gilmore gals call them ’survivor’ trees. OMG, there are not just 3 trees, but 7. Gotta have a tree in the kitchen, duh!

GiGi is going through a box of ornaments. And asks why Lorelai has Santa’s clothes. Lorelai says because she used to do Santa’s dry cleaning. GiGi puts on Rory’s old antlers. Aw, cute.

Lorelai asks about Logan. Rory was angry for a while about the Marty/Lucy thing, but eventually he admitted to being jealous and she realized that she was not a good friend for lying. She’s tried to leave Lucy messages.

Chris goes to hang mistletoe on the doorway, but apparently they put it on a fan so kissing is more a sport. And they have a whole bunch more traditions, like pretending to bake cookies, hanging stocking on the banister, and eating red & green M&M’s in their cereal.

Chris says it’s time to start new traditions. He pulls out some really ornate stockings, with all their names on them. But Rory wants her old, slightly used and singed stocking. Chris then starts to sing ‘Gloria’ really badly. I don’t think Rory & Lorelai want to start new traditions.

Luke goes to the Dragonfly Inn and asks Michel to see Lorelai. Michel comments about the awkwardness of him being there. Comments on Luke’s bad sense of style - the flannel and all. But decides to just stay silent. He’s not so good at the small talk.

Lorelai comes out and Luke asks to speak in private. Luke tells Lorelai about Anna wanting to move to New Mexico and the complications about wanting to see April occasionally, and that he is not able to see April at all now. He fesses about now going to court to fight for his rights - Lorelai applauds him for this - so Luke asks Lorelai for a character reference. Lorelai agrees right away to do it. Luke gives her the lawyer’s address so she can mail it to him right away. Luke then shakes her hand - that was weird.

Lorelai is sitting down to write the letter for Luke. She seems stumped about what to write. She’s feeling a lot of pressure - that whatever she writes could help Luke see his kid. Sookie sympathises with her, about how it’s also gotta be hard with their emotional history. But Lorelai is more feeling the pressure to create a ‘Gettysburg-eque’ letter. That powerful.

Lane is sooooo cute. So pregnant. She’s a little grumpy, talking about the whole ‘pregnancy’ discrimination. Feeling a little big, not wanting extra large tips for looking so pregnant. So cute.

April then stops in! She wanted to surprise Luke and come see him, but lied to her mom to get there. Luke feels really dishonest and wants to take April home. April gives Luke a present, and Luke says he has a present for her. He decides to let her stay so April does not get in trouble for lying - plus, he missed her

Luke, Rory and GiGi are sitting around the kitchen table in read Christmas sweaters stringing popcorn and cranberries. Lorelai complains about how hard it is to write the letter. That everything she writes is "shmucky", like she’s a writer for the history channel or something. Overusing the word "standup". Rory tries to give her some advice, but Lorelai is just a little crazy and can’t put her thoughts directly onto paper. Oh, I gotta take video of this segment.

Rory gives good advice - to just write what she feels. But then suggests, like Sookie, that perhaps it’s hard just because of her history with Luke. Lorelai tries to beg Rory to write the letter, but Rory refuses. Rory then has the idea to write a letter to Lucy, to explain the whole situation.

Chris comes back and Lorelai suddenly changes the subject. Does she not want Chris to know about writing the letter for Luke? Why?

Lane is waddling down the street, holding her back. She arrives home and her mom and Zack have gone grocery shopping for all the best food for pregnancy. They are being a little overprotective. Zack offers to rub her feet, talks about compression pantyhose, and they both ask about how many times she urinated that day. lol. Lane pulls out a hidden Twix bar. mmm, my favorite.

Lane spots the crib and does not say, awww, cute, but Lane is more mad that her drums have been stuffed in the closet. Lane then says she wants to have band practice. Feeling I guess that her life is flying past her.

Lorelai and Rory are at Westin’s, not Luke’s, trying to mimic candycane coffee by putting candy canes into their coffee. After the whole rant about the coffee, and try to bribe the owner for a real candycane coffee, they decide to go Christmas shopping.

Rory berates Lorelai for not being honest with Chris about writing the letter for Luke. Lorelai thinks that sometimes the truth is too complicated. Says that Chris is feeling a bit on edge about Luke - the argument about the wedding party and him seeing Lorelai with Liz’s baby.

April’s gift to Luke is a mask that she made - a plaster face mask decorated all fancy. She gossips about all her friends, which Luke always liked to do with her. April complains about having to go to New Mexico - having to give up her friends and swim team and all. It’s nice how Luke tries to make her feel better about moving there, even though he’s upset about it too.

Luke gives April her Christmas present. It’s a huge box!! Inside, a rock polisher. A weird gift. Apparently she asked for it. But, her grandmother already gave it to her, so Luke kinda feels bad. That he was left out from her life a bit not to know this. April says it’s ok to have two, so they end up feeling ok.

Chris comes in while Lorelai is writing the letter and she sneaks it away. Lorelai says it’s "Santa’s Secret Stuff", as if it’s Chris’ present. She shoo’s him away then tells Rory they need to go shopping.

Lane has her drums set up again and is ranting on about music and stuff but Brian is stunned staring at her tummy. Zack has a new mandolin, nice. But then talks about how he’s holding the mandolin the way you hold a baby. And shows Brian all the different ways you can hold a baby - and all the names for the positions. Wow, he’s been studying!

Gil shows up, brings his son along too. So, the whole band is there. Gil calls Lane a fertility goddess. Lane takes charge and says they should play their old sets then try some new stuff - until Gil spots the breast pump and congrats them on a good purchase.

Rory and Lorelai have lots of bags at the mall. Stuff for each other, as well as presents for all their friends (Sookie gets cooking stuff - nice), and even Emily & Richard. Chris is the last one on the list. So far, they have a sweater and book for him. Lorelai wishes they had a store for ‘husbands.’

Rory spots a shop with lots of telescopes, thinking it might be good for Chris. But, there in line at the store, Luke & April. They have the rock polisher and I guess whatever she’s getting to exchange it for? Lorelai, when asked how she is, says the letter is almost done. Awkward. Luke thinks it’s normal for them to have delayed Christmas. Apparently, April exchanged her rock polisher for a microscope.

Luke then says he was not always a good present giver. Giving Rory a whole series of monogrammed things - towels, belt, etc. And unicorn goodies, which Rory never liked but never admitted to from being so polite. But, to his credit, he never forgot her birthday. I had no idea, even, that he gave Rory things every year. That is so sweet!

Lane and Zack are buying groceries at Doose’s. Zack is ranting on Lane for buying sweets, and Zack says how much he loves Lane’s mom - she’s been so helpful and so nice. Lane then rants about how she hates being told what to do. She doesn’t want to be told how to lie down, what to eat, how many times she goes pee. She complains that she is not a person now. That she was repressed at home for so long, then had a small window of being a person, but is now an overburdened mom. Zack then comforts Lane about having her mom to babysit to let them rock out after the baby is born. Lane feels better. It makes more sense now about why she was freaking out.

Luke brings April back to the diner and April wants to lie to her mom about being in chess club so she can see Luke. Luke says it just wouldn’t be right to lie to Anna. Luke then says that they are in negotiations to figure out the parenting split and it’s important to be honest. Apparently Anna hired a ’shark’ of a lawyer. The microscope stays with Luke until April can come back to visit and they hug before she goes home. I love Luke - what a parent!

Lorelai is back at home looking all the old-fashioned secretary, using a typewriter to write the letter for Luke. And write it she did. She finished it.

So, this is the new Christmas Eve. Lorelai comes downstairs, letter in hand, and sees the family bliss of "making" the cookies - taking the pre-made cookies and putting icing on them. GiGi says they are making cookies by "scratching" - so cute.

Lorelai says she needs to run out. Drops the letter in a post box. And does so with a look of pride, sadness and satisfaction.

It’s snowing - now it’s officially Christmas in the Gilmore world

Simply put, this episode was of the former Gilmore ilk. Amy Sherman put Dave in a precarious position trying to get out of the Lorelei/Chris box she put them in at the end of Season 6. Dave came thru and it was thoroughly enjoyable to see the sparks between Luke/Lorelei (more on Lorelei’s part, however since Luke keeps it literally on the down low with her). Lane was a hoot in her misery and her husband was so endearing. This show should go on and on and on and on.

Who was that 40-something waitress that sparred with Lorelei last night?! Reminded me of President Bartlett’s secretary (she kept him in line before she died) from the West Wing, but much younger. Waitresses with attitude–gotta love it.

OMG Lane was so huge! And I love how bitchy she was getting. And I felt bad for her when she was talking about the very small three year window of independence she had as an adult.

I’m starting to see the Lorelei guilt coming back about her relationship with Luke. I see the regret in her eyes as she writes sends that letter in the mailbox.

And what a touching way to end the episode with it starting to snow just as she puts the letter in the mailbox. It’s as if “her snow” approved of the letter.

I totally think she associates the snow with Luke because of all those touching memories they shared together when it snowed.

I loved this episode!!!! It was so much like the old Gilmore girls. ASP put Dave in a really tough position when she left. So, he struggled a bit in the beginning, which, I think, should be expected. He did really well last night and I see many more episodes like the one last night in the future!

I just want to say this one thing that I noticed while watching the episode last night. When Lorelai was getting coffee from the Dragonfly kitchen and was talking to Sookie about the pressure that Lorelai was feeling while writing the letter. Sookie said that it must be hard digging up all of the feelings she had for Luke, and then Lorelai says that it wasn’t just about digging up her feelings for Luke, it was that she wanted to write a good letter. Notice that she never denies that she still had feelings for Luke! Just something that stood out to me.

Next week is going to be good! With Chris reading the letter! I can’t wait!

    >Luke then says he was not always a good >present giver. Giving Rory a whole series of >monogrammed things - towels, belt, etc. And >unicorn goodies, which Rory never liked but >never admitted to from being so polite. But, >to his credit, he never forgot her birthday. I >had no idea, even, that he gave Rory things >every year. That is so sweet!

Setting aside the return to the “Gilmore Girls” style, I think that this was the key to the episode. Prior to this moment, Lorelai was in such a tizzy about what to write. But remembering how good Luke was to Rory in the past (which was always a subtext in the show), two things crystalized at this moment - what Lorelai was going to write in the letter and her true feelings for Luke. Ask any parent - someone who is kind to their child is a special friend, and throw in all their past “baggage, and you have a heady blend of emotions!

This also was great acting. I’ve often commented that Lauren Graham can do more acting with one look than most actors can in an entire episode. Just watching her as Luke reminded her of how good he’s been to her daughter, and you can see an entire range of emotions. Emmy stuff!
