Lorelai’s character reference for Luke
Here is the text of the character reference letter that Lorelai wrote for Luke - the letter which meant the world to him in giving him his rights as a dad, but broke Christopher’s heart…
To Whom It May Concern:
In the nearly 10 years that I have known Luke Danes, I have come to know him as an honest and decent man. He is also one of the most kind and caring people I have ever met.
I am a single mother and I raised my daughter by myself, but once Luke Danes became my friend in this town, I never really felt alone. Luke and I have had our ups and downs over the years, but through it all, his relationship with my daughter Rory has never changed.
He’s always been there for her no matter what. He was there to celebrate her birthdays, he was there cheering her on at her high school graduation. Luke has been a sort of father figure in my daughter’s life. With his own daughter, Luke wasn’t given the opportunity to be there for her first 12 years, but he should be given that opportunity now. Once Luke Danes is in your life, he’s in your life forever.
I know from personal experience what an amazing gift that is and not to allow him access to his daughter would be to seriously deprive her of all this man has to offer and he offers so much.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Lorelai Gilmore

I was crying as the judge and Lorelai reading it! I was so happy of all the things she said and how she made it like Luke HAS been like a fatehr figure toward Rory, and he should be her father and given the chance to give Rory a brand new daughter April would be her dream as to have a sister. I think it would be nice to have one big happy family to what Lorelai has always dreamed of having with Chris whom she did not truly loved

whom she did now truely love…would be the best thing she could have right now with Luke. They saw each other every morning taling about each others plans and how there day went like a true couple. Luke had to see Lorelai go through many men in her life before he got to her. There was a bump in the road during there relationship but they found a way through it until April came along which might have been the best thing for them to endure together. Hopefully during this road trip through time they can overlook their differences and find a happy middle with each other. Rory has always liked Luke because she knew that her mother truly loved him and she knows what its like to fall in love and to have it ripped away from her. Many people may have not seen it but Rory and Lorelai have gone down the same road together but with different men. They are truly twins that were torn apart to live a life of there own.
Luke was a very grouchy, irratable man who couldnt find someone who could make him happy until Lorelai came though the diners door and opened a whole new world to him. The Gilmore Girls world. Like Lorelai said in her letter “Once Luke Danes is in your life, he’s in your life forever.” This showed that once someone is in your life you never truly forget how much they impact you in your life. ” You never truly love someone until they are gone” as said by many people who have gone through the same thing can show that it is true. All we can do is hope for the best and see what the outcome is and to let life pass.
Thank you for your time
Sincerly,
Amiee

I cried!! LOL it was so sweet!
Did anyone else find it weird that Christopher was upset that it sounded like a love letter, but he didn’t mind that Lorelai said that Luke was like a father to Rory and all that stuff. I thought that he would be mad that Lorelai considered Luke more of a father to Rory over the years.
That was just my thought

no b/c chris knows that he was a jerk when they were yung and he knows that he wasn’t there. he even said so in “Go Bulgogs”.
“He feels guilty about not being there for her when she was a child, when she needed him, and wants to make it up to her. Lorelai pacifies him saying Rory will probably have some crisis they can handle together in the future.”

That’s totally how I thought it was going to play out as well Hallie. I thought what was going to really make him lose it and ruin the marriage was the fact that the letter would reawaken his ever present guilt over the fact that he has been a non-existent presence in Rory’s life.
I think it was weird that he claimed it read like a love letter since it really doesn’t. She never really talks about her relationship personally with Luke, she only talks about how much support he has given to Rory over the years.
I found it odd too.
Despite the fact that I hate Chris, I’m glad that Lorelei didn’t hesitate when Chris asked if she still loved him as the preview had you believe. Despite the fact that she is totally lying to her subconscious, I think the fact that she convincingly re-established that she and Luke are completely over and that she truly loves Chris proved that she is keeping a level of integrity on her end of the marriage and that it is because Chris is utterly insecure that the marriage is crumbling.
I don’t know if that makes sense. But I was just glad that she didn’t so easily show that she rushed into the marriage with Chris, maybe against her better judgement.

Chris has been a jerk through out the years and I think the reason he blew up and walked out on Lorelai was because all those feelings from the past of him not being their when he should have been re entered into his mind. He basicly feels guilty and he should. As for Lorelai she should have told him about the letter because nobody likes secrets. But I’m happy because it will give Luke a chance to come back into her life.

I think Chris is a as hole, I also think he should leave Lorelai and Rory’s life alone. Luke should try to get Lorelai back because they belong together.

Come on!!
Christopher has always been a jerk!
all these years!
…Christopher is past!!!
About the letter….
It’s wonderfull!
I’m almost crying!!
Lorelai is soooo in love with Luke, but she doesn’t know that yet. She is figuring out, she’s figuring out Luke again, and the same thing with him!
They soo belong together!
They are finally opening their eyes!
Remember the episode “Luke can see her face”?
Now it’s time for “Lorelai can see his face”!
…TIME people..it’s all Lorelai and Luke need to figure out each other!
….She will have her whole package, very soon.

I actually think that was still part of it. I think Chris was mad because Luke was more a father to Rory than he was. This has always been a sticking point between them. But now he’s further pissed by the fact that Luke and Lorelai have a history, a history that means that she still has some feelings for Luke.
Yes, of course she has feelings for Luke. That doesn’t mean she’s going to leave Christopher. And it doesn’t mean she’s going to cheat on him.
But Chris never actually grew up, not completely. Some part of him is still that juvenile kid, afraid of commitment. And regardless of how justified he feels, and regardless of how hard the problems he and Lorelai face because of her feelings for Luke, it was still really crummy for him to storm out on her like that.
Maybe this time, he’s stormed out for the very last time. I hope so. Because if I come across the guy, I’ll hold him down so Luke can get in a few more good punches.
Despite all that, I’m really proud of Lorelai. She’s acting uncharacteristically mature. Yes, she still did hide the letter from Chris. (Maybe she didn’t know he’d take it so well.) But what she’s not doing is looking for a way out. Maybe she’s finally getting it.

It was touching and honest, Lorelai is a sincere grateful person and a wonderful friend.
It´s a pity that Chris didn´t understand the intention of helping Luke from Lorelai.

well chris is a jerk. he was never there for rory. and when she needed him lor and to beg. but luke was always there for rory and lor. he was there and he will always be there for him. i can’t wait for i’d rather be in philidelphia! i wonder what the title means. all tiltles have a meaning. I wonder how Luke found out about Richard’s acceident? But i think its so nice that he is going to show up at the hospital like that!! he is such a great person and now luke knows that he was always good enough for lor and in my opioun he will always be good enough for anyone. but luke’s soul mate most derfinennly is lor. and they have had there ups and downs over the years no dought about it. and don’t you remeber luke kept the fourtune that she gave him the first time they met! Don’t you remeber the 4 years of flirting laughing and joking around? Don’t you remeber how luke and lor watched that movie together when they weren’t even dating! don’t you? Just like lor said luke was givin the oppurtunitty to be there for his daughter for the first 12 years but he should be givin it now. Well luke wasn’t isn’t with lor right now but he should be givin that chance once again.

I have a feeling that somewhere along the way, I missed something. Did Luke just take April’s word for it that he was her father or did he have a paterity test done to prove that he is the father? In the back of my head,I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, like April’s mother admiting that she just went along with the whole thing so that April could have a relationship with Luke and maybe the two of them would also get together. Any thoughts about this?

Yes, Luke did just take April’s word for it. This was after Richard mentioned that he should verify the results and that there are people who will do almost anything to get in the money. (That is, if he had married Lorelai, and if Lorelai had inherited or otherwise gotten money from her parents.)
To have someone mention something like this and then not to act on it is kind of like revealing that there’s a gun hidden in the nightstand and then never having anyone ever use it. So I don’t know… Will the other shoe ever drop?
