Gilmore Girls Recap 7.14 “Farewell My Pet”

by Arieanna on February 13th, 2007

Episode Name "Farewell My Pet"
Episode Number: 7.14
Air Date: February 13, 2007

Lorelai and Rory are discussing, at the hospital, the fight between Chris and Lorelai. Rory offers to help. ‘It’s just a character reference’, after all. Then Lorelai asks Rory to return to school, since I guess she took time off to be with Richard. It’s time to return to normal.

Lorelai returns to the Dragonfly Inn. It’s her first day back. Sookie has major cravings for cookies with cayenne, onion chocolate cookies. Ew. But she plays an adorable pregnant woman. Well, not so much playing this time, since she is pregnant.

Michel brought PawPaw into work. Does not want to leave him alone since ChinChin died. Aw. Well, Michel looks sad in that he’s not chipper, and meaner than usual. Sookie and Lorelai try to console him, but he’s so sad. Lorelai suggests a memorial for ChinChin to cheer him up and give him and PawPaw a chance to say goodbye.

"So, can you do it tomorrow?" - Michel

Apparently, Michel took that as a suggestion to hold the memorial. Michel goes off to create the guest list.

Paris is marking off her boards when Rory returns. She’s a little defensive about feeling bad for going to events on her own. But she does the friend thing and makes sure Rory et. al are ok. Then she suggests some medical things Richard should do. Paris also made notes, minus her interpretations (blacked out on the note pages!). Paris and Rory are to trade resumes that day. Rory is not ready with her resume, and apologizes. Paris has 21 versions of her resume! For schools, fellowships, different job types, etc.

There is a package for Rory waiting. A big box. Inside, a present from Logan. A "second semester senior survival kit" including coffee, notebook and other goodies. Including an ‘inspirational keepsake’. Rory calls Logan and he offers to come see her early as well. What a sweetie!! He even drops the "I love you" very casually.

Paris mentions how gaga Rory looks. Rory is so in love. Logan being there for her like that was a big thing for her. Paris says that she ‘broke’ Logan. She can make him do anything now.

Lorelai is dealing with some annoying customers, but Michel is there waiting to ‘talk’. Sookie is already on the couch. Michel asks to hear their ideas for the funeral.

Lorelai and Sookie stall a bit. Cute. Michel wants ChinChin’s ashes to be scattered by his favorite tree. Lorelai suggests the memorial at the Inn, and with some annoyances from Michel, they decide on around 5pm. They run out of ideas, since of course they had not thought of anything. Michel suggests the types of flowers he wants, to match ChinChin’s fur, and gets annoyed that there are no stationary types for him to choose from yet for the programs. Annoyed at Lorelai and Sookie thinking of him as "just a dog." Then Sookie is left to determine the menu with Sookie.

Chris stops by the Inn to talk with Lorelai. She takes him to a guest room for privacy.

"Obviously we have some issues" - Chris

Lorelai is being super sarcastic that Chris was not there - not when she was in panic about the heart attack. Not the two days after when he disappeared after seeing Luke at the hospital. Took off like a baby.

Lorelai says that being married does not give you the right to take off, but requires rather that you be there. They argue about Luke being there, that Lorelai did not tell him to go. Well, of course not, he was there for her. Plus, why does Chris need to be so annoyed about it? Chris says he "needed time" when Lorelai "needed Chris."

You don’t get to ‘turn off’ a marriage,’ which is the short version of the argument.

Lorelai says she was not surprised that Chris was not there for her. Gets so mad she storms out and says they will talk sometime later. Doing to Chris what he did to her.

Rory calls Lorelai to say how much she’s dreading her economics class without Richard there. It’s not her favorite course. She took it because Richard was teaching it. Lorelai admits that Chris came by the Inn to say he was needing space. Rory is completely mad at Chris for him not being there when Richard was ill, and then after when he ditched them for two days more. Rory says she’s on Lorelai’s side, and will always be. That she’s entitled to an opinion and doesn’t like what he did. It was a very loving conversation.

Rory goes into class and Tucker Culbertson, the TA, comes to introduce himself to Rory. Wow, she gets instantly flustered. Blushes and smiles and gets all cute. Now Rory is looking forward to her econ class…

So much for that gaga Logan look. Now Rory has to deal with this obvious crush for Tucker… what unfortunate timing…

Chris is back at home waiting for Lorelai. She comes home and they are cordial to each other. But the conversation begins.

Chris admits he shouldn’t have taken off. But brings up the letter. Lorelai instantly says it’s a character reference, that she had to do it for Luke. Chris thinks it’s all a load of crap. Chris then tells Lorelai about his non-verbal instant fist fight with Luke. That he became irrational.

Chris is mad that he did not give Lorelai enough time, when she asked for it. That he pushed her to start the relationship right away. He says that Lorelai was not ready. She needed time to ‘disengage.’

Lorelai says maybe they did rush into it, but they’re into it, she’s there, she’s committed. Chris wants to give up. Give up, what’s that? How can there be ‘nothing left to do’? That’s rather pathetic. All marriages would fail if everyone decided to give up and be baby rather than face their problems and work through them together.

He feels like he still is asking Lorelai to marry him, that even though they are married, he feels like he’s still chasing her. Lorelai says she is ‘in this’, in the marriage. Chris does not seem convinced and leaves to spend the night with his mom.

Michel is angry that the cat pillows are still at the Inn and that the final menu is not created for the funeral. He’s annoyed that Sookie just wants to whip up food based on what is left and that Lorelai just wants to put together flowers at the last minute.

Lorelai snaps at Michel, that she has a few other things on her plate. Michel is very peeved. Says sarcastically that he’s sorry that the death was not convenient for her and will later try to reschedule his grieving.

Paris and Rory are at the bookstore when Rory runs into her new TA. He’s now without his glasses and looks waaaay more hot. He says thanks to Rory for saying nice things to Richard about his first day. He’s flattered. Rory compliments his book choice and gets all flustered again in their conversation. Paris notices that Rory is all red and blotchy. But Paris is too involved in her book search to push.

Kirk delivers the flowers for ChinChin’s memorial. A beautiful flowered picture of ChinChin. Lorelai tells the employees attendance to the memorial is a requirement. Sookie made an amazing assortment of delicacies. She’s a little mad at Michel for insulting her kids in his sorrow, but does feel bad for him nonetheless.

Sookie pushes everyone out of the kitchen to talk to Lorelai about Chris. Lorelai insists that she wants to be in the marriage, but the Luke jealousy is blinding him completely. Lorelai says the only solution may be cutting Luke out of her life completely. Sookie is skeptical that Lorelai could do it. That Lorelai cannot simply erase all of her feelings for Luke overnight. That Lorelai moved on to a man who wanted to marry her. She admits that she still has feelings for Luke, and because of that, and what Chris is sensing, she must cut him out.

Sookie asks if Chris would be the one if there were no Luke in the past or the future.

I think Sookie is implying that Lorelai only ran to Chris because he was there and willing to be with her - to hide her pain of not being able to be with Luke, the one she truly wants to be with.

Lorelai brings Sookie to a music store to select music for the funeral - Lorelai has asked Zack to play for the funeral. She apologizes for what she said. Michel asks for Celine Dion - that "My Heart Will Go On" was ChinChin’s favorite song. They find the sheet music and Zack is now stuck with music he hates. Comical.

Michel plans to go to Luke’s to get a hamburger. That the one time he had felt low, he had bought a hamburger and brought it home. He never ate it, his whole diet prevailed, but ChinChin fished it out of the trash and ate it, and loved it. So, now Michel wants to eat a hamburger in his memory.

Luke waves to Lorelai from inside the cafe. He seems just like a good friend saying "hi, I hope you’re ok". But, to Lorelai, it just shows her what she will miss if she cuts him from her life. That, or makes her think twice about her decision on whom to cut from her life…

Logan waits for Rory outside her apartment as a surprise. He missed her. After some cuddles, Rory says they have to talk.

Rory tells Logan that she wants to be super honest, after the whole Marty thing. She is not sure why it’s happening, that perhaps it’s human nature to destroy happiness, but she is self-sabotaging. Rory admits that she has a crush on Tucker. That she was disgusted with the way she acted, all flustered and interested. Rory says perhaps she got so comfortable with Logan that perhaps she let her guard down.

Logan says it’s just a crush. It’s not a big deal. That he finds other girls attractive sometimes, but he would never act on it, because he loves Rory. Rory is also worried about the comment Paris made about Logan being "broken" by her. Rory asks if she broke him? Logan says, so what? Logan belongs to Rory. Does Rory feel like she belongs to Logan? She does. If that is being ‘broken’, who cares!

Logan trusts her completely and is not in the least worried about them as a couple. Neither is Rory, actually. They both agree that it’s "great good" to feel that way. They have shared together that they are fully committed to this relationship, and feel extremely at peace and happy about their decision.

The memorial service for ChinChin is underway. PawPaw is in the front row, along with lots of other people and some of their pets. There are lots of flowers and Zack playing music. He plays it so sadly that Lorelai looks like she wants to cry - you know she’s thinking about Chris, though, not ChinChin.

Lorelai returns home and Chris is waiting. Lorelai is sad - crying. She sits down and tells Chris:

"It’s not just Luke. You were right, there are feelings there. Because, when that ended, I just jumped. "

"I pushed you" - Chris

"I jumped. But if that’s all there was, if that’s all it was, we could fix it, you know, with time." - Lorelai

"But it’s not…" - Chris

"You’ve always been this possibility for me. This wonderful possibility. But it’s just not right. And I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry." - Lorelai

Chris is crying now too. "Yeah, I guess I shoulda known, huh. It took me 20 years to get you to say yes"

"I need you to know that you’re the man I want to want." - Lorelai

"I know" - Chris

"You’ve no idea how badly I wish…", Lorelai sobs

"I do, I do know. I do." - Chris

Lorelai is just broken hearted. That she can’t have what she wants. That she has hurt herself and Chris in the process. And that, inside, she is broken. I think even Chris feels sorry for her. He has accepted that she cannot love him and is sad for her.

That episode ended just about an hour ago for me, and it was great!!!

I am not going to spoil anything for you except these two things:

    A. Chris finally tells Lorelai about the fight that he had with Luke in “Merry Fisticuffs”

    B. Chris finally admits that he came in on Lorelai when she was vulnerable!

    C. And, just a little tidbit, Rory’s crush on the TA actually brings Logan and Rory closer…

Oh, sorry, make it three things.

Also, some new stuff on crazy-internet-people.

We have an audio promo for the next episode (7.15), besides the one that aired after the last episode. Speaking of which, that promo and this audio make it official…. Lorelai and Chris have split! Anyway, here:

    http://heloworks.com/Gilmore_Girls/Audio/715AudioPromo.mp3

About the promo from the last episode, it was good. First, it shows Lorelai and Rory driving in the car, with Lorelai saying “Your dad and I broke up” then Rory asks “Who else knows?” and Lorelai says “No one.”

Then you see Babbette and Patty talking at Luke’s. Babbette says “Chris definitely moved out.” Then Patty starts, for some reason, comparing Lorelai, Chris, AND Luke, to farm animals. Saying “Did the hen (Lorelai) break up with the rooster (Chris), or did the rooster break up with the hen?” Then she says “Maybe the hen belongs with the ostrich (Luke).” At ;east something along those lines.

The breakup was beautifully executed. You could tell that Lorelai was heartbroken, even if she doesn’t love him. I loved how they made it about HER. It seems that the first half of the season was all about the men in her life - now, she made a decision for HER.

    Yes, Lauren was wonderful

Everything about this episode was great:

    - Give Lauren Graham an Emmy
    - Props to the writers for remembering that this is a show about the gilmore GIRLS
    - Props to David Sutcliffe. I wasn’t a Chris fan, but being a “possibility” is kind of like getting kicked on the crotch. Ouch for Mr. Hayden.
    - Rory and Lorelai were so cute this Episode.
    - Zach, Michel, Sookie: Hilarious!
    - Props to Sookie for waking up Lorelai.
    - Again, give Lauren Graham that Emmy.
    - There were actual pop culture references! Wow, it’s as if ASP is there!

OMG, this episode made me cry. You can tell how heartbroken she is that she doesn’t love Chris. I think she always knew but kind of buried deep in her mind because at this point in her life, a reliable relationship was more important that true, passionate love.

thank god they finally brought up the fact that Chris totally manipulated her into this relationship. I honestly got the vibe that Chris was guilty over the fact that he even started the entire relationship, and that he was responsible for Lorelei’s pain right now. But at the same time, Lorelei is totally holding herself responsible for his pain as well as her own pain.

In my opinion, the break up was beautifully executed and hopefully those first interactions with Luke where they are re-introduced to each other with those hints of “something there” will be even more beautiful.

I am really excited to see how this season plays out.

And p.s. IN the first half of the season, I was totally okay with the fact that it would end this season. But now I totally want them to continue on for just one more season to truly finish off the arc.

Imagine a close to season finale episode with the drama and happiness of Lorelei delivering Luke’s baby and all the happy/dramatic emotions that are involved. *sigh*

i loved all the little hints that were in the episode about the break up and what lorelai was thinking about…

Rory talking to lorelai-” Haven’t u ever made a decision that u changed your mind about later?”

Lorelai talking about songs when she was looking for Celine Dion’s song- ” seems like my heart cant make up its mind.”

    amazing.

    yay luke and lorelai!!!

    Feb 14, 2007 at 12:01 am

i cried too, it was beautifully done and for once they were both honest with each other about how they felt. i loved that lorelai was sincere about it all and christopher wasn’t angry, like he has been for the last couple of episodes.

i hope that lorelai takes some time to figure things out for herself, if she jumps back into luke’s arms…… thats what she did to chris, and it could just end up bad.

i LOVED the beginning of the episode with emily and richard, it reminded me of the fast talking gilmore girls that we all fell in love with, i wish there were more emily and richard bits in this episode.

ps. zach playing celine — hilarious!

Loved that episode. Chris was such a jerk in the Inn.

I can’t wait for next week. It’s got Stars Hollow favorites back, patty and babette, gosipping. And comparing to farm animals. Which is just funny.

Thank GOD Chris is gone. OMG. You cant believe how happy I am.

    Feb 14, 2007 at 3:45 am

I just hope that when Luke and Lorelai start dating again Chris stays out of it 100%. I how I hope.

The Luke/Lorelai scene was great. So sweet. Just two small waves.

Lauren did great in the episode. As did Alexis.

Zach playing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ was hilarious =]

I hope that Luke and Lorelai take it slow. I don’t want her to just “jump”. This relationship is meant to work out, not rushed.

    Feb 14, 2007 at 6:43 am

I loved this episode. And even though I knew it was coming and I don’t even like Christopher, I got a little teary-eyed at the end. Lorelai was so clearly heartbroken over this, and even Christopher was taking responsibility for his part in the failure of their marriage (finally, he takes responsibility for something!). I thought it was beautifully done, as someone else said.

I too thoroughly enjoyed Zach playing “My Heart Will Go On.” It actually sounded really pretty played acoustically. :)

Kudos to Christoper for having the guts to say the relationship was fraught. His tendency to act out in a childish manner is not so admirable, however, I do believe he loved Lorelei more than she loved him - she loved the fantasy of him. She did say her feelings for Luke were only part of the problem - so now we see her redefining her motives for a healthy relationship. However, it took Christopher to draw this out of her, so, maybe, he really isn’t a total selfish idiot.

    Feb 14, 2007 at 8:08 am

i agree with you about having Lorelai in love with “the fanstasy” of chris..which is entirely true. she never truely loved him and im so happy he fianlly had the guts to say something about having rushing into the marrige.

i was kinda disapointed because luke had on visual during the entire episode…he is the reason their marrige is failing

i liked how michel got all upset about having chin chin’s funeral perfect.

Omg did you see how Miss Patty looked in the promo after the episode! she is getting thinner in the face! she is so pretty..although i will miss the heavier patty later but there isnt much left…so..

i am so glad rory and logan are doing great…and that crush actually brought them closer.

i cant wait for luke to come back! lorelai and luke so belong together. finally things are going good for both of them! i miss seeing luke in lorelai’s life and not seeing her in the diner has broken me in more ways that one…:(

i cant wait till the next episode! i am so excited!

  • Arieanna
    Feb 14, 2007 at 10:53 am

I don’t think Luke is the reason Lorelai and Chris broke up.

Remember Sookie asking if Lorelai would be with Chris even if there was no Luke?

I think Lorelai realized then that no, she wouldn’t. For the same reasons she hadn’t for 20 years. The only reason she did is because she was hurt and he was there for her.

    amazing episode.

i love lorelai’s line to chris- “I need you to know you’re the one I want to want.” or at least it was something like that.

michel gave a great performance as did sookie and zach. rory was wonderful asa always, but the performance of the night went to lorelai for her emotional goodbye to chris!!! THANK YOU LORD!!! chris also gave a very good performance.

i am glad that their relationship ended the way it did. i am glad that one did not just storm out.

i absolutley was amazed by the episode. it brought me to tears. amazing job DR.

Michel made me so sad in this episode!! I felt so bad for him! I have never seen Michel so emotional.

And even though I don’t like Christopher, the break-up made me sad too. I wish that Lorelai was smarter in the first place and never got involved with him in the first place. Then neither of them would be hurt.

I loved Christopher’s line, “I’ve been asking you to marry me for twenty years, and I feel like I’m still asking you.” I think he really hit the nail on the head with that statement. It seems so true.

I agree. They broke up because of Lorelai - because Lorelai was unhappy.

I LOVE how the season is turning out. Lorelai is herself again. She is not dependent on the men in her life. They broke up because Lorelai was unhappy.

I really really hope they take it nice and slow. She said that Luke was not the only reason they broke up (if it was, “they could fix it” with time - as Lorelai pointed it out”). So, I’m guessing Lorelai will have to do a little self searching (at least a week or two)

This could have been an utter failure - but it was wonderful.

I felt bad for both Lorelai and Chris. They’re basically just two people trying to find their way in this world. You could tell - they were both heartbrokened. They both, for the first time, acted like grownups toward each other.

    Beautiful, just beautiful.

Major Major Major Props to Lauren Graham for the final scene. (David Sutcliffe held his own too)

I don’t believe that Rory’s crush on the TA will bring them closer. On the contrary, I believe it is the beginning of the end for them. First of all Rory is only 22 years old. She is brilliant and should be thinking about Grad school. Failing that she should be following her career path as a journalist. Logan distracts her. He is the cause of many of the difficulties Rory has experienced in the past two years.

Secondly, although Logan is a charming suitor, he is not right for Rory. Whatever other mistakes Lorelai made in her life she always did the right thing when it came to Rory. She gave her a strong work ethic, a solid value system and a joie de vie. Logan, on the other hand, is a trust fund kid. He grew up with a black American Express Card in his pocket along with a strong sense of entitlement. He has never had to work for anything in his life. He has taken a break from his womanizing but he won’t maintain his loyalty because it isn’t part of his value system. The parallels between Chris and Logan are significant. Although Logan is a younger version, they both grew up in privileged homes. Both men were kicked out of several schools. Both men run away when the going gets tough. Why do the fans believe Logan is so good for Rory just because he is a good looking guy? If she absolutely has to have a guy in her life, why not Marty who has the same work ethic and drive as Rory?

  • Brenda
    Feb 15, 2007 at 9:00 pm

I agree, the breakup was touching and extremely well done. There was no angry vitriol…just two people admitting they made a mistake. I disagree, however, that Lorelai doesn’t love Chris. She absolutely does love him but not in the romantic, soul mate kind of way. She cares for him as two people who share a history together might and as the father of her child. It’s not the mature, deep, love and respect she has for Luke.

Lauren Graham was absolutely brilliant. Why she has not won an Emmy for her role as Lorelai is a mystery to me.

I want Lorelai to feel more comfortable around Luke again- like they were in the first few seasons, before they started dating. She goes into the diner to eat every day, they are great friends. And then, after the hiatus, she and Luke should begin DATING again. That gives her4 episodes or so to truley figure herself out. If they rush into it luke Lor did with Chris, it will end up sloppy.

With all due respect, it is not Rory’s responsibility to push Logan to do better. Although Rory is a very serious student, Lorelai has instilled in her a joie de Vie, so she knows how to have fun and enjoy herself. Think back to her Valedictorian speech in Season 3, Episode 22 “Those are Strings Pinocchio”. Lorelai filled her life with books and music and humor and love. She doesn’t need a party boy to show her how to have a good time.

You raise a good point about Marty. Certainly the time has passed for her and Marty to be together. Had they connected in 1st year, they would have been a good couple. If she had been with Marty, she wouldn’t have jumped off a three story scaffold or have been humiliated by Marty’s family or stolen a yacht and been given 300 hours of community service and criminal record.

May I reiterate, Rory is only 22 years old. She has time to find that one special person to share her live with. Hopefully she will go to grad school and we will get a season 8.

I certainly respect your right to like Logan but I think on this issue we will have to agree to disagree

    I agree.
However - if this whole luke thing doesnt work out (THAT WOULD SUCK) then she might as well have stayed w/ Chris.

i beg to differ,i think Logan is perfect.there is nothing wrong with a trust fund as long as you keep your sense of self and considering where Logan is coming from,he has tried.richard is a trust fund kid and has been faithfully married for 40 years.

sadly, TWC finally kept their committment and allowed those of us in the desert to watch CW network shows for the very last three episodes. I dislike them ore than Chris’ character in the end.
I am not the only daydreamer who loved this show and enjoyed something decent on televison. Having been THAT young mom, missing college, dreaming of my own Inn and a mocha lover to boot.
I related to the show and made friends with people in line at stores and pizza parlors and starbucks chatting about hoping to see it on again.
Why was it cancelled? I missed all that, and wouldn’t TWC/CW be responsible for any low ratings as they didn’t show it in so many counties especially Inland Empire? They bit their nose off and I hope the sensation goes straight to their corporate wallets.
Hopefully season 7 will be shown in it’s entirety for reruns?! Loved them all, last show a bit rushed at the end but they could do a great movie from it!
let me serve coffee in it ok! alwyas the fan!
