Gilmore Girls writing makes a close call
In last night’s episode of Gilmore Girls, Hay Bale Maze, as Rory and Logan are walking through Stars Hollow, Logan uses the word "knickers" but, within the context of the sentence, it could easily be mistaken for "niggers." Here is the context:
Rory takes Logan on a tour of Stars Hollow. Rory and Logan are talking about Taylor and his role in the town and the hay bale maze.
Logan: "It’s fascinating"
Rory: "It’s fascinating?"
Logan: "I find Stars Hollow fascinating."
Rory: "You’re out of gourd"
Logan: "No, I’m very much in my gourd. This is cool. It’s like Colonial Williamsburg, but without the knickers and tricolored hats."
So, you can see how the context could set that up for a misunderstanding. I had to listen to it many times, and I still had a hard time with it. The writers should have opted for a different word to avoid this problem.

I could tell it was knickers… and I just re watched the episode about an hour ago and it’s DEFINEATLY knickers. But I do agree that it does kind of sound like the *n word*. I agree the writers should have tried to find a different word to use… alot of people could be offended by this if they didn’t know what Matt was really saying. But whats done is done. We know for a fact he was saying ‘knickers’

I knew that he said knickers too and I didn’t care. I didn’t even notice until my b/f (Yes, I finally got him to watch the WHOLE episode with me, and he likes it now!) noticed it.
I just want to know why they were picking on my old stomping grounds, Williamsburg, VA? It’s a great town!!
Otherwise, Great episode and it’s good to hear Luke rant again!! I wish Lorelai wasn’t so ‘holding back’ with her words. I know it’s b/c the script is shorter now and they probably have less to say, but she says her lines so fast there still seems to be a dead spot before the next line starts. I don’t want her to slow down, just say MORE! Like in the old days!
Anyhoo - Yay, for a Season 8, I’ll be sooo happy to hear the official news!

I totally disagree.
Are we getting to the point in this country where we must be afraid of everything we say because someone out there might misunderstand or take it the wrong way?
Knickers is a legit word.
Next thing we know, people will be afraid to say other stuff that’s totally innocent.
Like if you’re shopping for a new couch and discussing it with a friend where people can overhear you. Your friend asks if you’re going for the basic couch and loveseat combination, but you’re not. So you say:
“No, we thought it would be nice to have a sectional.”
Then the people around you gasp and can’t believe you said SEX in public, where “little ears” could hear it. And you certainly don’t want to offend any gay people while you’re at it since their idea of sex is quite different from norm. And you don’t want to offend anyone who simply isn’t having ANY sex. Or anyone who is from the older generation and doesn’t think sex should be brought up at all EVER. Or anyone who thinks of the word “gender” rather than “sex.”
Silly, silly, silly.
Can’t we just watch a TV show and enjoy it without the nonsense?
Personally, I don’t understand why it’s OK to say “asshole” on TV. Most shows will bleep it out, yes, but they bleep out “hole” rather than “ass.”
Isn’t “ass” more offensive than “hole”? Or the whole thing — bleep both syllables rather than just one.

I agree with this Country isn’t like it use to be, I get tired of watching what I have to say all the time.
I knew wht Logan said and so what that word can be affered to anyone now-adays.

Ridiculous suggestion. It would never have crossed my mind that he said something so vile. You need to take a major mud bath/salt glow/chill pill combo.

My senitments exactly. It seems to me people out there in LaLa Land just stay awake nights looking for trouble.

Sorry, the word is spelled “Sentiments”.

I understood the word and it made perfect sense in context - indeed nickers makes much more sense in context than the word it was confused with.
The other word would have made no sense in that context or for the character to use at any time.

Wow. I watched the show (and actually enjoyed it, which I haven’t done for a long time) and then when I checked this site I was so surprised to find this discussion.
It never crossed my mind that “Gilmore Girls writing makes a close call.” How ridiculous.
I read that heading and thought, “What in the world happened Tuesday night that I totally missed?”
Gee, it’s a good thing none of the Stars Hollow townsfolk were putting on little plays during the town’s celebration. I’d hate for someone to mention that Miss Patty’s students were OK dancers, but hideous thespians.
We’d see a post here about the writers nearly crossing the line by referring to hideous lesbians.

Honestly, America is sooooo funny when it comes to words like that… I wonder what a song (f.e. by 50 Cent) sounds like in the states… Is it only music with some *beep*s in it?!
I’ll take you to the candy shop
I’ll let you lick the lollypop
Go ‘head girl, don’t you stop
Keep going ’til you hit the spot (woah)
[Olivia]
I’ll take you to the candy shop
Boy one taste of what I got
I’ll have you spending all you got
Keep going ’til you hit the spot (woah)
Or is it like:
I’ll take you to the *beep* shop
I’ll let you *beep* the lollypop
Go ‘head girl, don’t you stop
Keep going ’til you *beep* the *beep* (woah)
[Olivia]
I’ll take you to the *beep* shop
Boy one *beep* of what I got
I’ll have you *beep* all you got
Keep going ’til you *beep* the *beep* (woah)

HAHA it was soooo the N word. Listen to it…the gg sound is very obvious! And to those who think that knickers is more contexually correct, no way… you are talking about HISTORICAL Williamsburg…home of the slaves…. “N”s andtricorner hats is exactly what he said and all I could do was Laugh!!!
Hey if the rappers can say it, why cant I???(nappyheadedho)
