Gilmore Girls 7.21 “Unto the Breach” Recap

by Arieanna on May 8th, 2007

Episode Name: “Unto the Breach”
Episode Number: 7.21
Air Date: May 8, 2007

Lorelai and Sookie are walking down the street. Lorelai is stressed because she is waiting to hear if Logan has proposed to Rory. She’s rattling off all the things she needs to get for Rory’s graduation and party. Lorelai talks about how embarrassed she is about singing a song to Luke. Lorelai and Sookie go to Weston’s to pick up a cake for the Gilmore dinner for Rory. As they leave, Sookie rattles off a mnemonic of the things Lorelai needs to get.

Luke walks in to Liz’s shop and is impressed by the work TJ has done. He wants to get Rory a graduation gift and thinks earrings might be the right thing. Liz mentions Lorelai’s serenade to Luke and he downplays it. She asks what he has done about the serenade, and he says that there is nothing to respond to since she was drunk and sang a sappy song. That it was ‘no big deal’.

Liz tells him that “I Will Always Love You” is not just a sappy song, that the lines really meant something. Luke says that if Lorelai meant it, that if she loved him, she would tell him. Lorelai hasn’t been back to the diner yet. Luke picks out a pair of earrings for Rory and spots a lovely necklace; Liz encourages Luke to get it for Lorelai. That she made it with Lorelai in mind. Liz tells Luke that he does not have to pay for Rory’s earrings after everything TJ has put him through. He thinks twice about the necklace she suggested for Lorelai but, after choosing to take it, says he is picking it up as a backup for Rory. Liz is unconvinced.

Paris is negotiating the sale of her dining room table. She plays hardball and manages to sell it for more than what she paid for it! Doyle is spackling the holes in the wall. Paris says she should bring Advil for the trip to India. He tells her that they should have some fun on their backpacking adventure and rest while they are on vacation but Paris argues that, after getting into Harvard medical school, now is not the time for her to turn up the intensity. She plans to backpack with text books!

Paris promises that after she completes her four years of school, she will rest. They have a very loving kiss, and Rory walks in. She can’t believe that they are graduating tomorrow. Paris calls Rory sentimental, but Rory insists it’s just incredulous. Rory takes a picture of Paris and Doyle to commemorate their last day of college. She teases Paris by telling her that she is a natural at being annoyed on film.

Lorelai goes into the diner. Miss Patty and Babette look at her with significance, and tell her that Luke is upstairs and to go on up. Lorelai says she’s just there for coffee. She tells Miss Patty and Babette that she just got swept up in the moment and that her ’serenade’ was just karaoke and didn’t mean anything. During this speech, Luke comes in behind her. He smiles at the mention of the serenade, but then his face falls when Lorelai says it meant nothing.

Luke asks her what she wants, and of course Lorelai says coffee. Luke asks, or rather infers, that it is to-go. This gets an "um, ok" from Lorelai. She is a little flustered that Luke is being blunt and not really looking at her. To break the tension and get back their banter, Lorelai asks Luke if she should have a donut or a muffin and he tells her to have whatever she wants. Lorelai makes a joke of "a donut with a side of muffin" - still no response from Luke.

Miss Patty and Babette ask what time they should get to Yale, saying that they don’t want to miss Rory’s graduation. Lorelai is a little surprised that they - and apparently the whole town - have assumed they would go. Rory calls on Lorelai’s cell; Rory tells her that she ‘has news that she won’t believe.’ Lorelai is expecting to hear that Logan has proposed - she pauses to get her bearings - but it turns out that Rory is just talking about a speaker at the graduation ceremony.

Lorelai explains about the town wanting to go to the graduation ceremony. Rory says she cannot get more than four tickets. Rory asks abot Luke and Lorelai in a "so, how’s it going" kind of way. An inference that she saw what her mom was feeling and wanted to know more. Lorelai says that she was just in the diner trying to figure out how she feels and that Luke just ignored her. But that that’s ok, because she hadn’t made up her mind anyway. Rory says that she and Logan have ‘romantic plans’, but it turns out that they are just going to spackle the apartment. Cute banter about that - "Spackle you later"

The town hall meeting comes to order - Taylor is sitting in a wheelchair, a brace on his leg! He tells everyone he’s ok, and they all want to know what happened. First he tried to say he fell in the bath, but then it turns out he was using some sort of foot spa thing and fell over. The first order of business is about Kirk. Kirk says that he plans to be suspended over the town in an acrylic box, without food or water - like David Blaine, but with a smaller box. Everyone says that if Kirk wants to be in a box, they should just let him.

Babette asks Lorelai in a whisper about the graduation again. Lorelai whispers back that she couldn’t get more tickets. The outrage gets loud enough to disturb the town meeting, and Taylor says it’s important enough to be on the agenda. So, he asks Lorelai to ‘defend herself’.

Lorelai tells the group that she cannot get more tickets for Rory’s graduation, but Taylor asks about all the adopted kids, and kids with divorced parents. Like, ‘why didn’t you try harder’. Lorelai tells everybody that they can come to the graduation party she’s throwing for Rory next week. Gypsy says it’s just not the same. Lorelai says she’ll even hand Rory her diploma again, then Taylor pipes in that they can have the school band play the graduation ceremony music. Lorelai looks concerned. The party is so big it’s now been moved to the town square! Babette reminds Lorelai to take lots of pictures, so that they can blow them up for the "reenactment" - Taylor even suggest taking notes!

The Gilmore graduation party Emily & Richard are throwing for Rory. The DAR ladies try to convince Rory to come back. She looks a little bored. Logan comes to rescue her. Her "knight in shining armor", as she states. Logan says he wants to tell Rory something urgent. He tells Rory that she looks beautiful, which gets a kiss.

Lorelai is watching Logan and Rory with a concerned look on her face. The women at the function tell Lorelai that she looks amazing for the mother of a college graduate. They want to know her skin-care ritual. lol.

Christopher calls her (yet another rescue), and she meets him outside in the courtyard. He tells her he ‘didn’t want to do this in front of everyone’. The whole meeting-after-the-breakup thing. After the "hi’s" and the "you look good’s", Christopher asks how Rory is. Lorelai says Rory is good. Excited. Lorelai says she’s excited too, but sad. Nostalgic. Terrified. Lorelai tells Chris that Logan asked permission to marry Rory.

Chris says ‘wow’ and mentions that Rory is so young. Chris asks Lorelai what she said. She told Logan that he could ask her. She asks Chris what he thinks.

"I’m just letting it sink in. You know, you hear about people asking the father… Not that you don’t deserve to be asked"

Well, that was a bit of a selfish response. I think Lorelai meant what did he think about Rory. Lorelai assures Chris they’ll figure out the whole divorced-parenting thing. They joke about being in synch by the time Rory is 60. Lorelai says they should go in to see Rory now. Chris gives Rory a kiss and Logan gives him a "good to see you too, sir".

The champagne glasses are being clanged. Richard and Emily thank the guests for coming to the party. Emily corrects him when he says "my granddaughter" instead of "our granddaughter" - gets some laughs. Richard goes on to say that when they sat down to write their toast, all his words sounded too insignificant to mark such an auspicious occasion.

"So, instead, maestro…"

The music starts. Emily says

"Please excuse us, we’re not singers"

Lorelai and Chris look embarassed already.

Richard: You’re the top. You have graduated.
Emily: You’re the top. Your grandparents are elated.
Richard: Newspaper Editor. Phi Beta Cappa, wow!
Emily: You’re a revelation. A huge sensation.
Richard: You should take a bow.
Emily: You are done. No more school for you.
Richard: There is nothing… now that you can’t do.
Emily: You make us proud. We’ll sing it loud.
Richard: It’s true!
Together: ‘Cause our Rory, you’re a Bulldog through and through!

Rory has tears in her eyes as she thanks them. Lorelai looks really proud and touched too. Rory says that none of this would be possible without their help. She says thank you profusely, and they all raise their glasses for Rory.

Chris has a text message from the babysitter, asking if GiGi can watch an hour of television. Chris says "I don’t think she’s ready for the Pussycat Dolls" - good cultural reference, there. He goes to make a call. Logan interrupts with

"Actually, would you mind waiting. Trust me, you’ll want to stick around for this"

Lorelai looks concerned again. Logan goes to stand next to Rory at the front of the room. Chris whispers

"Is he gonna…?"

Lorelai responds "not here… not now?! "

Logan gets ready to make his speech.

"If I could, I’d also like to say a few words about my girlfriend of the past 3 years."

Lorelai braces herself against a very startled Chris. Logan faces Rory…

"You amaze me, Rory Gilmore. Every day. Everything that you do. Everything that you are. This past year I realized that I don’t know a lot more than I thought I knew. If that makes sense.

Sorry, I’m a little bit nervous! I didn’t think I would be.

What I’m trying to say is… that… I don’t know a lot. But I know that I love you. And I want to be with you. Forever. [Logan pulls out a ring box…]

Rory Gilmore, will you marry me?"

Rory looks petrified. She is startled, and flustered. She says ‘um’. Lorelai gives her a look of empathy. Emily looks ecstatic.

"Wow. Um, wow. I… wow."

Logan asks "Is there a ‘yes’ between those ‘wow’s’?"

"Um. I’m just, I’m so surprised. I just. Um. Um. [sigh]. Will you come talk to me outside?"

Logan is looking very concerned. They go outside. The crowd is murmuring. Emily & Richard look concerned now too. Emily tells the pianist to play something. She goes to look at Rory out the window. Lorelai looks devistated.

"Sorry, I just, I didn’t want to talk in front of everybody."

Outside, is a white carriage with two white horses. Logan says he understands. Rory asks "is that?", pointing at the carriage.

"For us, yeah. I’m sorry, I know you said you were over big gestures. But that’s what wedding proposals are. And tonight, with your parents here, and your grandparents, I just thought…"

Rory says:

"No, it’s not the size of the gesture. It’s the gesture itself."

Logan tells Rory he got the job out in Silicon Valley. Rory is immediately excited for him. Logan says he wanted to save the news until after he proposed.

"Wow, you’ve been thinking about this for a while."

She looks a little alarmed. Logan is all seriousness.

"Back when everything was up in the air, business wise, I realized that as long as I had you, I’d be ok."

Logan tells Rory she would love Palo Alto (it is quite nice, actually). He says they could hike on the weekends, go biking. Rory says California living sounds really athletic. Still got her sense of humor. Logan chimes up about coffee drinking on University Avenue, which Rory can imagine much easier.

Logan tells Rory that there’s a house that they could rent. With a nice back yard with an avocado tree. Rory says she does like guacamole. Logan tells her it’s not far from San Francisco, just up the highway. Rory is impressed with all his research. He tells her she could work at the Chronicle, or the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Rory says it sounds amazing. Wonderful.

"I just, I don’t know. You’ve had time to think about this, and research newspapers and it’s so sweet, and… wonderful. I just. I’m hearing about it for the first time."

"So, you’re saying in the past 3 years, you’ve never thought about marrying me?", Logan asks

Rory replies "Oh, of course I have!"

"And…?"

"It’s always a really wonderful thought. But. It was always hypothetical. And…"

Logan says it was for him too, but then it hit him, and he asked himself, ‘Why wait?’ Logan asks:

"Remember when we were in the life and death brigade, and we stood on that tower, and held hands. We jumped. Let’s do that again, Rory. Let’s jump."

Rory looks pleased. On the verge of saying yes.

Inside, Emily and Lorelai are looking on. Emily says she doesn’t know what to do. But she’s referring to the timing of food. She is angry too. Asks why Rory didn’t just say yes! Lorelai says Rory is just not sure she wants to marry Logan. Emily says that’s ridiculous, he’s a Huntzberger. Lorelai says it’s a marriage proposal, not a sale on linens.

Richard pipes up that Rory was just caught off guard. That they all were. She probably just needs a moment to get her bearings. Lorelai gets a call. It’s Rory. She wants her mom. Lorelai asks Chris if he wants to come on the way out, but he declines.

In the horse-drawn carriage - Rory and Lorelai.

"I just couldn’t answer him. I just kept saying ‘I don’t know, I’ll have to think about it’. And it was awful."

Rory says Logan was obviously upset. That he had made all these plans, even down to the house and avocado tree - Lorelai says she does like guacamole. Rory chimes up that she had to insist that it was all out of the blue. The deepest, darkest, naviest blue. Rory asks why Lorelai is so calm. Lorelai says that Logan asked her permission a couple of days ago. Rory is annoyed she knew. Lorelai says she was dying to tell her.

Rory asks Lorelai what she should do. Lorelai says it’s her decision. Maybe she should just take a few days, let the shock wear off. Rory wants her real opinion, but Lorelai won’t give it. Rory says she really loves Logan. That things have been amazing lately. But that they are so young. Does age matter when you’re in love? But also, what is the rush? Sounds like a pro/con list coming up. Rory keeps insisting Lorelai tell her what to do.

Lorelai tries to cheer Rory up. Asks if she wants to take the carriage through town and do the Queen wave. Of course she does ;)

Late that night, Lorelai is out walking in Stars Hollow. lala music is on. Kirk is suspended in his clear box above the street. People stop to stare. Lorelai waves.

Luke comes out of the diner, and Lorelai is right there. He asks her how she’s doing and why she’s out so late. Lorelai says she needed to clear her head. And wanted to see if Kirk was still in the box. Luke is trying to ignore it - gawking only encourages his asinine behavior.

Luke asks what exactly Lorelai had to clear her head about. Lorelai tells Luke that Logan proposed to Rory. Luke is incredulous. Lorelai and Luke are both proud she’s taking time to think it over. Luke asks if Lorelai is leaning towards "no", but Lorelai says she is not; she’s "upright". Luke says he could understand if she were leaning away from yes. That Rory is very young and the decision is the most important in her life. Lorelai says they love each other. That some are lucky to get it young. The conversation alludes to their relationship, about "others needing time" or are "never ready". Luke says it’s probably not never, just being careful. To make sure it’s right. Lorelai says you can’t always be 100% sure. That it’s a leap of faith. After all that time, how could you not know? Luke asks, who? Lorelai says Rory, and that gets a "right… Rory" from Luke.

Lorelai says she’s going to go home now, but Luke says to hold on. Luke goes in to get the gift for Rory… in the same drawer is the necklace for Lorelai. He pauses, seems disappointed. He sighs and closes the drawer. He brings out his gift for Rory and asks that Lorelai give it to her on the day of her actual graduation. They say goodnight.

Rory is in the apartment packing and spackling. She pours herself a bowl of cereal (unpacking a bowl and spoon), but can’t use the milk in the fridge since it belongs to Paris. It has a note on it that it’s for Paris only, on graduation morning. Dry cereal it is. She sits alone on a box. The engagement ring box is sitting near her. She stares at it. She decides to open the box. Rory puts the engagement ring on her finger and stares at it contemplatively. She smiles.

Emily, Richard and Lorelai are walking to the graduation ceremony. They are all complaining about how boring the speaker was for the morning portion. Emily asks if Logan will be joining them. Lorelai tells them that Logan won’t be sitting with them. He’ll be with his friends; plus, it could be awkward. Emily is displeased and says that she wants to know what Rory’s decision is. She wants to know exactly what Rory is thinking about.

Lorelai pouts because she forgot to get more programs for the reenactment. Richard assures her that he can get some for her.

Rory and Paris drink champagne with Lucy and Olivia. Lucy and Olivia are raving about a party they went to the night before to celebrate graduation. They ask why Rory didn’t come after her grandparent’s party. Paris said at least she had an excuse - she went with Doyle to a restaurant to prepare for India. Rory said she would have gone if she didn’t have to spackle. No mention of the proposal? She says that the party was fine, her grandparents sang her a song… They go to join the line-up for the graduation procession and make a cheer to their futures.

Waiting for the procession to begin, Emily expresses shock over the fact that Lorelai does not know if Rory will accept Logan’s proposal - aren’t they bosom buddies after all? Lorelai insists Rory needs to make her own decision. Emily complains about the seats being too far away. Chris arrives and apologizes for being late and asks if there has been any news about Rory’s decision. Richard says that he thinks Bill Clinton would have been a more interesting speaker for the graduation. Does a good job trying to ease tension.

Rory and Paris talk backstage. Paris is stressing about whether she should say "thank you" or "thank you so much". It’s coming up to the moment. They’ve been together since high school, and now each are going their separate ways. Rory insists they’ll be friends a long time. Paris says Rory will do great things. Paris grabs her for a hug. Logan waves from where he’s standing. The procession is starting. "Unto the breach" says Paris, as they begin walking.

Lorelai asks Chris if he’s ready to be the parent of a Yale graduate. Emily then mentions how she read in the New York Times that people are getting married younger and younger these days. Lorelai then says she’s sure that Rory has read it. Emily proceeds to complain about her chair. Paris’ name is called. Lorelai claps and takes a picture. Emily continues to say Lorelai must tell Rory what to do. Richard tells her to shush.

Lorelai stresses about getting the details right for the reenactment. Richard says he’ll note the time and take the photos. He tells her just to enjoy her daughter’s graduation from Yale. That it’s her moment as much as Rory’s.

Rory’s name is called: "Lorelai Lee Gilmore"

Rory accepts her diploma. Her family is in glee. Lorelai stands up and yells "Yay Rory!" She looks so proud! Chris joins her to clap for Rory. Rory smiles. Lorelai almost cries.

Pictures of the happy family. Chris takes it. Then it’s Rory, Lorelai and Chris. Cute. Rory notices Logan and goes to speak with him. Logan congratulates her. He goes on a bit of a rant about his own tipsy graduation experience. Rory interrupts him. She looks concerned.

"I’m sorry. I can’t. I love you. You know how much I love you. I love the idea of being married to you. But there are a lot of things in my life right now that are undecided. And that used to scare me, but I kind of like the idea that it’s just all kind of wide open. And if I married you, it just wouldn’t be."

Logan looks impassive. Maybe a little angry.

"So, what? I go to San Francisco and you stay in the East? We see each other occasionally?"

Rory says they can try long distance. That they’ve done it before. Logan asks if that’s really going to work. Rory says it would be hard.

"I don’t want to do that Rory. I don’t want to go backwards. If we can’t take the next step… [shrug]"

Rory now looks concerned. She asks if it has to be all or nothing? Logan says it does. Rory says they could at least try.

Side note: isn’t he being a little selfish? When he had to go away, she was patient… but when she wants to make her own decisions, he insists to keep her for himself?

Logan shakes his head and asks

"What’s the point?"

Rory looks like she will cry. They both say "so" questioningly. It’s up to Rory now. All or nothing. She pauses, then reaches in to grab the ring box. Logan shakes his head. He’s disappointed in her. She holds it out to him. He doesn’t take it right away. Even hesitates. But then grabs it, says "Goodbye Rory" and walks away. Rory sighs and goes back to her family.

Back at her apartment, Rory and Lorelai finish packing up her stuff into the car. Lorelai says she’s exhausted. Lorelai asks if Rory is ok. She says she feels awful. Sick. And she misses him already. Rory is also frustrated that her graduation day - a happy day - was tainted.

Lorelai tells her that she thinks she made the right choice and that when she meets the right person, she will just know it’s right. She won’t want to hesitate. She’ll just know. Rory says she hopes so. Rory says, "I guess, no avocado trees". Aw. Then she perks up and says "I think I’ll get my own avocado tree". Kind of like saying ‘I will decide my future’. Lorelai continues the light banter. Tells Rory she can have anything she wants.

"Oh yes, wiiide open" - Rory

Rory takes the last box out of the apartment. She returns and turns off the light. Like closing a chapter in a book…

The episode just ended! It was great!!

But, one thing. I saw the preview for next week, and at first, I was SOOOOO excited and happy! They show Luke and Lorelai kissing! But then, it hit me. This is it. This is the last time we will see a Gilmore girls preview for next week. Now, I am extremely sad.

It is going to be so hard next week to be happy for Luke and Lorelai, when now we know it’s over.

  • Jen
    May 8, 2007 at 5:12 pm

I cried almost the whole time! I’m really said that it’s ending like this.

  • Marci

This is so typically the new management of the network to screw the viewers over. After 7 seasons they’re going to end it unhappily for everyone. I’ve been rooting for both couples to be together and I’m really annoyed that the writers are ending it this way.

however, despite all of that, the kirk in a box thing was amazingg.

rory should have said yes– I know it is just a tv show but that character is two years away from drinking tequila and pounding her head on the bar saying “what the f@#!$ was I thinking?”

  • Mike
    May 8, 2007 at 5:24 pm

Episode was o.k. I just think Amy would have handled it a lot better. I was waiting for Rory to stick her tongue out when she walked across the stage. It would have been a nice throw back to the old episodes. I cried/angry when I saw the preview for next week. Did they have to show the kiss. It’s gonna take away from it. My biggest fear is that next week comes and I am going to feel so unsatisfied. It just deserves to get a great ending, and I’m not seeing it. Will it be just wrapping up Lor and Rory and Lor and Luke? Because if Emily and Lorelai don’t have a moment, one angry fan right here.

  • Joey
    May 8, 2007 at 5:25 pm

I cried while watching the preview. Luke and Lorelai finally getting together in the last episode. No more. No baby, no wedding, no nothing. It’s so unfair. Like an evil cliffhanger. This completely sucks and I hate it but the next episode looks awesome! They finally kissed!

Plus- does anyone realize, Rory/Logan was longer then Luke/Lorelai?

Now, I know all you people saying ‘ but luke and lorelai were love at first site since season one ‘ and i agree with that. But im saying, the actual relationship.

Logan cares so much for Rory, and darn that Rosenthal. I loved what he did with the 2nd half of the 7th season, but breaking up Rogan is just wrong.

  • Jen
    May 8, 2007 at 5:26 pm

I completely agree with you (Marci)…

  • Maggie
    May 8, 2007 at 5:29 pm

yeah, em, especially since we arent going to get to see the rest of the relationship =[

  • Jen
    May 8, 2007 at 5:33 pm

I think that it would be so much better for Rory to have said yes to Logan. I mean she would have everything on a platter…
It would have been perfect, her and loagn are really ment to be together, they balance each other out. Logan made Rory relax and lighten up and enjoy life. While Rory helped Logan grow up. It would just be right for them to be together.

  • Mike
    May 8, 2007 at 5:35 pm

I think Rory and Logan breaking up was the best thing they could have done. The whole show was her working towards a career, with love on the way. Now shes done with school and ready to go and make a life.

  • Katie
    May 8, 2007 at 5:39 pm

I am watching old eps on DVD for the rest of the night.

I am bawling it just hit me that its almost over

  • Jen
    May 8, 2007 at 5:45 pm

No matter what I think it won’t change what happens. She will go on an have her career.

She could have had her career and everything with Lorgan in CA. It’s not like he said lets get married and forget your dreams and stuff like that. Logan loves her and she said she loved him too. So why wont they (the writers) let her have her career and eat it too.

  • sammi
    May 8, 2007 at 5:46 pm

man did they turned a good show into a freaking wreck. how does amy walk away from her own show and how da hell does CW not want to offer her more money or wahteva the hell she wanted?? sick PEOPLE in this world i tell u.
Lesson after seven years?? PEOPLE in general are money hungry, selfish, pathetic a**holes.
jus goes to show the human race consist of a bunch of animals with some brain capacity.
so sad the show couldnt have been better than what it turned out to be.
anyway, Lauren is still AWESOME!! go lor!

I’m not gonna say much since I have been sobbing for the last hour or so. I am just gonna post the new stuff from crazy-internet-people, mainly about why there will not be a season eight.

“My Friend at GG has sent me more information regarding the issue that finally caused the network to end the negotiations. I will put it under spoiler tags out of respect for those who don’t want to know:
The girls had agreed to a 13 week season with a very generous pay increase. All that was needed was the signatures. Then, after the contacts had been drawn up and approved by everyone’s legal team, the girls came back and told the network that they wanted to change the number of episodes down to 8. That was the deal breaker. It wasn’t worth it to the network.”

“…Lauren submitted Farewell, my Pet episode for Emmy. It says it can be changed till 31th May.”

“Apparently the girls were under the impression that the advertisers had threatened the CW with withdrawing all network ad money if they did not deliver Gilmore’s coveted females teen audience. That led the girls to believe that they had the backing of the advertisers and could force the network do anything they wanted. They greatly miscalculated since apparently the advertisers are really pleased with the crop of new pilots and, though they like GG, they aren’t that concern with its demise. Despite the public persona that has been presented by Lauren, according to my sources, she was totally shocked when the network ended negotiations and is not happy at all with the fallout that is rippling through Hollywood.”

“Gilmore Girls’ Demise Delays AR Ep 11! ‘More fallout from the 11th hour cancellation of Gilmore Girls: This week’s Ausiello Report vodcast had to be scrapped and re-shot to address the late-breaking development (and work in a very special guest). As a result, Episode 1.11 — originally scheduled to go up today — will now go live tomorrow morning. Sorry for the inconvenience, but, well, desperate times call for desperate measures.’”

This really is a sad news and it makes no sense at all. They built the couple up as being so close and in love and then she refused the proposal and broke up straight away? Why can’t the writer leave a bit of room for future possibility for the viewers who love to see good endings? Though we all know good ending doesn’t happen often in real lives but that is the whole point of watching TV or moveis isn’t it? I guess they don’t really care since the show is ending anyway.

What is the point of watching next week’s finale if we all know that we are not even going to have one (between daughter and mother) happy couple at all?

    This really sucks!

ok - so angry that logan and rory broke up!!! When he asked her, i was like…ok, that’s how they’ll end it, with rory going off to CA with logan….but, NOOOOOOO!!! They had to screw up and make her say no! WTF!!!!

I don’t even know if i can watch next week…i am so upset…tears people!

ok - i know it’s just tv…but for a stay-at-home mom like me, these people are my friends!

I think the fact that they kept our hopes up that she would say yes…for the entire damn episode (even if we knew differntly). Plus the whole fact Rory/logan have been fantastic in this season….WHY THE HELL DID YOU BREAK THEM UP. Hell he even thought out the whole thing. What the hell did Rory have left…dead end job search. WHY DID ROSENTHAL BREAK THEM UP. Im not even going to consider lorelai/Luke because thats just going to end up as badly. Way to go CW, ruining 7 years of a fantastis show is a fantastic thing to accomplish in your first year.

This is what I don’t understand.. If rory said no to CA then how come the previews show a sign saying Bon Voyage to Rory.. maybe she changes her mind I hope so because he grew up and changed everything because he loves her!

I am looking forward to this very passionate kiss between l&l but i just dont know how that is going to bring the show into “full circle”..i mean they kissed at the end of season 4 and we all know what happened! they just broke up! So if they just leave us with that then how are we supposed to know what happens next??? they can just break up again! i know that this show can’t last forever but i would have been very happy if we could have seen luke and lorelai get married, because that for me would be the cherry on top of a great show.

I am so mad…that was the dumbest episode ever!!!!!!! Rory was more sad to see Logan go to London than she was to see him walk away forever…………..dang it….I was so mad..not even a tear shed…and did you see the preview for next week..there is no way it is going to satisfy us no way

I am so ticked right now……..that was the worst episode ever…I agree with all of you..they messed it up big time….Rory was more upset when Logan left for London than saying good bye forever….dang it this stinks…I can not believe its going to end like this…..Rory was supposed to be different from Lorelie……not afraid of commitment…and now she is going to end up like her mother…I can’t believe they showed the kiss….its so not going to satisfy us fans…not even close

  • Amy

Well I just finished watching tonights episode and I just can’t believe it. First of all I agree with the rest of you, what is rory thinking? That she wants to end up like Lorelai in and out of bad relationships the rest of her life. And what are the writers thinking about just breaking them up all together … AND THAT’S ALL FOLKS. Geez…

After seven years, being a devoted watcher, and this is how they end things for us. That Sucks!

I can’t imagine next week with Luke and Lorelai is going to be anything better than what we saw with rory and logan tonight.

How many times in past episodes (like when they all went to cape cod for valentines day) and rory said to her mom “It just hit me, these could be the ones” and her mom said what do you mean and rory meant that these guys could be the ones that they marry. What happened? As far as I can see they have abandoned everything they have been leading up to.

Anyway, all I can hope for is that rory rethinks the whole situation but I doubt it. What a waste of time these last three years have been watching and waiting for the moment that the proposal happened (after rory calmed him down in his wild ways and he made her life more fun - and yes I know someone said that already) and then she says no. I know she wants a career, she can have that too. Like someone else said, I did not hear Logan say “Abandon All Of Your Dreams” and come away with me.

All I can say is that they did not think these last two episodes out at all. Unless things get really good next week. We can only hope….

  • Amanda
    May 8, 2007 at 6:29 pm

I so know what you mean….Rory was more upset when Logan left for London than when he walked away forever…Not even a tear…come on……..it made her look like she doesnt give a rip…..Next week is going to be a dissapointment…I can already tell.

  • Jen
    May 8, 2007 at 6:31 pm

She should rethink and tell logan yes after all…
then luke and Lorelai kiss and that would be close to a good ending…

I mean I understand it’s about the girls but the girl grew up and boys are part of that.
Laurenn said it could end with a wedding; fine, but do lorelai and rory have to be cat ladies (remember when they started showing up at her house) together.

So they are BFF or whatever, you can still be all BFF and have your love too.

about the Luke and Lorelai kiggin on 7.22
    how is it!????
like a typical kiss of they? like 6.01 for example
or more like the one of 5.09 “Emily says hello” that they made out on Lorelai’s porch!!!????? that was the best Lurai’s (luke and lorelai’s) kiss ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how is it? like a typical kiss or more like 5.09 or is even better!!?????

I agree. It just seemed wrong not that R and L broke -up per se, but how it happened. The suspense, the indecisiveness of R. Logan walking off in the courtyard. He fought for her so many times, and now, he just ends it there. The pace of the show was way off. I think that there was way too much going on in this episode.

I actually don’t mind the thought of Rory on her own. However, this breakup was so badly engineered, that I can feel nothing but contempt for the writing staff of the show for insulting the emotional intelligence of its viewers.

I agree that the planning of the proposal was horrible. They built up the future of their relationship so much and the writers just have Rory throw it back in Logan’s face. He didnt need to move to San Francisco. He could’ve easily worked someplace closer but the writers had to make him selfish. She was supposed to factor him in when she made her decisions and he was trying to force her to make the decision to move to California. This season its been hard to tell if Logan is sweet and caring or a spoiled-kid. Rosenthal needed to make up his mind. I guess its too late now. Lorelai will get her happy ending and Rory will get her independence.*tear.

I am so upset with the biggest lump in my stomach. I LOVED Rory and Logan. Ive grown up on this show and am so so SO mad right now how its all ending.
And SERIOUSLY, just the last time we saw Logan he was saying to not base her career decision on him. That he will factor her in, then she will factor him..blah blah blah. The whole entire time we saw Logan changing and constantly showing how much he loved Rory and then to just CUT IT OFF LIKE THAT with a walkaway?
SO UPSET. I just…want to go on and on and on but yet Im speechless at the same time.

I thought it was completely arrogant, inconsiderate of self-centered of Logan to ask Rory in front of all the guest. Did he think that he was the center of her universe?

I think the answer she gave him was so very Amy Sherman Palladino’s Gilmore Girls and I, for one, am glad she said no. She’s young, bright and the world is her oyster.

    Well played.

Perhaps the reassurance that through it all, you still have your mom, your family, your friends? That you do not need to be in a relationship to be happy but that it’s wonderful to be able to be in love? That at twenty two a girl can be driven and focused on her career, what will ultimately make her amazing and priceless, instead of the prospect of marriage?

I am glad they are ending this show on such a ‘girl power’ tone. I love how Lorelai says at the end of the episode that Rory can have anything she wants. Well, now she truly can.

  • paula
    May 9, 2007 at 5:01 am

Her dreams were not in California. He was essentially say ‘abandon all your dreams.’ Does anyone remember how uncomfortable she was when Logan was discussing their relationship that one episode she had a crush on her TA? That is when I realized that Rory was freaked out by commitment at such a young age.

  • paula
    May 9, 2007 at 5:04 am

Oh my god, people on my side. Yes, most definitely. The world is all hers. I kept thinking that this is the the Rory that I fell in love with and related to. Logan changed her instead of Rory changing him. And next week she will meet her idol!

  • Sharon
    May 9, 2007 at 5:22 am

I think the point of the show wasn’t that Rory and Logan didn’t love each other, it’s that it’s okay to not be ready for marriage. Rory gave Logan the option to wait, and he opted out. That’s very selfish, he wanted it his way or no way at all, not really thinking about her.

Loreli told Rory that she would just know, just like she did when she asked Luke to marry her. Length of relationship has nothing to do with it. Loreli made the mistake of not waiting, wanting it her way or no way at all, same mistake Logan is making. Seems like Loreli may get another chance though from the previews. They might do it with Rory and Logan too, maybe he’ll realize he’s missing the opportunity to have her forever by saying it’s all or nothing. Not being ready for marriage doesn’t mean you don’t love a person, its just like she said, she’s not ready to be restricted with her options, she just graduated and has the world by the tail, restrictions aren’t fair if it isn’t what you want.

  • LL
    May 9, 2007 at 5:30 am

Why build up the Rory and Logan relationship just to throw it all off in one episode? Just because they think it will be cool to show Rory single at the end of the series?
Patricia I sooo agree with you!
The writers are a bunch of idiots. First they show Logan as a person who is willing to do anything for Rory, that he will factor her in and then this change of character simply to break them up? I love Rory and Logan but a proper breakup would at least have been satisfactory. This is just dumb! Really bad writing.

  • LL
    May 9, 2007 at 5:37 am

They didn’t have to get married - they could have worked something out! It was out of character for Logan to say it’s all or nothing when he loves her so much but noooooo the writers wanted to end the show with Rory being single! I get that but we deserved a better, credible breakup - not a silly one just made to leave her single!

Argh! season 7 at its height of stupidity. I am so mad!

  • Jen
    May 9, 2007 at 5:43 am

I think the show should end with everyone being happy, not just the girls being the girls. I mean they have grown up so much, growing up means falling in love and moving on with life. It would just be nice to see that.

I’m not saying a wedding, but maybe Logan could have been a little nicer and said they could try long distance, I mean they did it before.

And its not really fair that Lorelai and luke start up agian and Rory is all alone. Wasn’t there an episode when Lorelai and Max got back together and she didn’t want to rub it in Rory’s face so she didn’t tell her because she wasn’t with Dean. Well this is rubbing it in her face.

Oh yeah, I know that Logan’s timing was all wrong, but it was sweet. He thought of everything and had a ring and stuff and the horses. OMG the horses, that’s like a fairy tale… To bad it’s ruined!

Yeah I think she freaked about being so young, but to say no, and I mean the engagement could have been a long engagement. I mean she lived with the guy. Thanks LL. And I completely agree with all the points you added too!
I agree with Sharon completely as well.

I actually fully support and agree with Rory’s decision to say no. It was the right decision for her.
Logan has already had the chance to “be scared” and explore after college. It’s Rory’s turn.
They already had a long distance relationship and techinically, it wasn’t under Rorys choice (even though, yes, Logan didnt have as much say either) but she has the right to control something as well, not leave the shots to Logan.

I had fallen in love with Logans character, and I am beyond broken hearted. I loved how Rory and Logan bantered and had fun, but more so, I loved how their issues were dealt with from the very start. Even when they were just “friends with benefits”

But the whole break-up, it just DOESNT MAKE SENSE. To end a two year relationship that has gone through some big events with one another in just a WALKAWAY?! I mean, Amy Sherman Palladino did that with Jess, but that relationship didnt have as much depth and Rory and Logan did.

The decisions made were right on, completely Gilmore Girl. And I would be just as bad if the decision went the other way. It was the way it was handled.

I hate all the criticism that have happened this year. I kept my mouth shut because it was the Gilmore Girls. The girls I watched every week and the one hour that I got to escape and see the bits and laughs of a world I wish existed in real life.

I didnt think it was all that bad all the time. And I personally didnt want to jump off the bridge with the Lorelei/Luke dilemma. Because I think at the time, it was still within the realms of the characters personality and what could happen in real life. Thats what matters most, the characters integrity. Not a story book happy ending. And so I do believe the characters’ intergrities will (or I pray) stay intact, but it shouldnt be done at the expense of lazniess…or, irresponsibilty..I dont know what the word is Im looking for. But along the lines of being rushed because they basically didnt know what they were doing.

And even though the show was a below par at times, I believed in being a fan and standing by it. Period. I dont think I can do that now in my disappointment. Im just beyond devasted that the show I have literally grown up watching is ending in a way to make my worst dreams come true.

Logan is a creep. He was a creep when he was introduced, he’s been a creep every season, and by walking away from Rory because she doesn’t want to be married he is still a creep. Just because he always came back with those big doe eyes and another lame excuse never meant he wasn’t going to go off screwing a bridesmaid or trekking to Vegas and breaking yet another little peice of Rory’s heart!

Hooray for Rory! And kudos to Dash who pointed out the difference between too young and to immature. Rory is definitly mature enought to handle marriage - and mature enough to realize that even though she could, she probably shouldn’t. Logan needs to finish up kindergarten.

I was reminded of the last episode of Everwood, where practically everything ended up hunky-dory, regardless of the characters, motivations, and plotlines that had led up to it. I’m glad GG isn’t going out like that!

Off to the store to by tissues in bulk for next week . . .

  • Jill
    May 9, 2007 at 6:54 am

This episode was bittersweet for me. Obviously the sweet part is the fact that we know Luke and Lorelei are going to be heading in the right direction, and on their way to pure bliss. But I am so upset over the Rory/Logan situation. I bawled my eyes out from the minute he proposed, until she said no. I just wish that since this is the last season, that the writers would have done something more satisfying where those two are concerned.

I thought it was a very touching moment when Lorelei stood up and cheered for Rory when she was receiving her diploma. How proud she must have been… cried my eyes out!!!

I have to agree with a previous comment that was made… my biggest fear is that we’ll get to next weeks episode and be left completely unsatisfied… I hope I am proven wrong.

You can still be independent in a loving relationship. In fact the strength that comes from partnership can enrich and make your independence that much better….

I am tired of the feminist definition of independence only wearing the clothing of “alone”

it is an immature, shallow definition of the world– as babs striesand said, “people need people”

Just because you are partnered or married doesn’t mean that you have to pop out babies and be barefoot–

It’s nice to come home to a loving person after a day of working in your chosen field.

That what I’m talking about. They can still be the “girls” and have their dreams and the boys…

Before anyone says, but logan is being selfish, yes he is but he’s not telling Rory to stop her career. He’s just asking her to relocate, besides it’s not like she got the job at the New York Times. It would be diferent if he said come with me and forget the Times, but he didn’t. He kinda told her come with me and work another great paper (i would think CA would be better that Iowa).

Look at it from Logan’s perspective. You tell someone you love them. You tell them you want to be with them FOREVER. Period. They are the only one for you.

But then you get an uneasy response from someone who still feels like she has to figure out things. How would that feel? Would you feel okay to continue the relationship even when you feel rejected? When you feel that this person is not on your wavelength? That she was not ready to commit forever? He was right when he said that they had had a long relationship and he wanted to jump. He did not want it to be pointless.

Rory wanted to wait. She wanted to think things through. To experience more. How could Logan stick around with someone who had doubts?

It’d be incredibly unfair to him. If anything, him walking away was the most mature thing he has done. He saw the reality of the situation and decided to venture on his own.

I did feel disappointed for him. Having someone walk away from you like that is heartbreaking. But it’s even worse when one person isn’t ready.

That is nice for you. It doesn’t mean it’s nice for Rory. She wants to travel. To see the world. In what universe could she get married anytime soon unless it is to her camera man or unless she had CNNs private jet?

Besides, she did not reject his love. She rejected the eternal commitment. She did love him. The key being she wasn’t ready to form that longterm partnership.

Yeah wow, I never write on these blog type dealies, but I’ve gotta say something NOW!..

I can’t believe what I heard last night, series finale, the only place on TV that can truely take you into a wonderful place like Star’s Hollow and meeting up once a week with the gilmore girls and the whole of Stars Hollow was such a fantasic get-a-way.
It just started to get good, I mean great again, and to say the least, it just doesn’t make any sense, the way Rory loves academics and is a exellent student it would only seem to follow the logical course of getting her Master’s Degree, which most do who are exreme achievers.
I whole heartly LOVE the Gilmore Girls. I hope they continue on at least another 2 years!!
Please, Please, Please!!!! I would not be able to say it enough. Please!!!!!

Love all the cast and the show forever!!!!!

I don’t think Rory cried when Logan walked away because she was in shock. When he left for London she cried becuase she knew it was coming and had more time to process it. I honest think she felt like he would wait and when he walk away she was just shocked…
The wallowing will come (remember with Dean, she didn’t cry until after she kissed Tristian).

Honestly, this season they seriously focused on Rogan’s relationship. All the times they had Logan show up out of the blue, all the ‘i love you’s’, and they just had to dump it down the drain.

    May 9, 2007 at 11:47 am

I 100% agree that saying ‘all or nothing’ was out of character for him. what were they thinking having him say something like that? Even pre-wedding blue bells he wouldnt have said something that selfish!! When i heard that I was like ‘exCUSE me?’

Interesting point of view. When I first saw the scene, I bawled my yes out, but now, after what you said, it makes more sense. Yes, I do love Rogan together. But I see what you mean- I see your point from Logans perspective.

I probably have an unpopular opinion but I’m going to spit it out anyway.

I want to say straight off that I’m very disappointed with this season and with the show ending! I don’t believe this crap was fair to the fans no matter whose fault it was (CW?LG?AB?) and I don’t believe any of us are getting the ending we want no matter what we wanted.

Now here’s my unpopular opinion - I have been waiting for how long for these two to break up? It’s about time! I have thought from the very beginning that Logan was a creep and a cheating creep at that! If it were me he would have had my foot up his ass and been out the door in about five seconds! He has been selfish throughout the show and I don’t understand why everyone wanted them together. How could he ruin her moment? I thought that he was supposed to factor her in? Sure he did.. he factored in that he wanted her to drop her entire life to be with him and when she didn’t want to do that he said all or nothing! How is that factoring her in? He didn’t factor in her feelings! I say good riddance! However I didn’t want her to want to be with him if you know what I mean. I wanted her to break up with him.

WHY DIDNT LUKE GIVE HER THE NECKLACE?? I WANTED TO KICK MY TV!

The ending - I saw the promo for the series finale as I’m sure you all did too. Well I’m definately not happy about it and I’ll always think they should have done a few more episodes but I think the kiss looked nice. If L/L back together is as heavily implied as I’ve been reading at least I can make up my own ending in my mind. If they would have left it completely L w/o L I would have thrown my DVDs in the garbage. At least I can dream. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for a 7th heaven type of situation.

You know, I’m with you! The more I read the more I think it was the network (CW) and not the girls who ended the talks. So I say lets keep trying!!! Here’s an email I sent out to all my friends, I say, copy, paste and send out to all of yours!! We can at least try!!!!!

    Fellow Gilmore Girls fans,

We urge you to write to the CW and tell them how disappointed you are that they canceled Gilmore Girls!

    feedback@CWTV.com

We urge you to use the subject heading: “We support Gilmore Girls Season 8″

PLEASE forward this to all your friends, and everyone else who you will think will help bring back Gilmore Girls!

The final Gilmore Girls episode will air May 15, 2007. Please help us change this!

did anyone else notice that when she was trying the ring on (and looking very happy about it, which was just mean to us because she seemed like she wanted to) she was wearing the same shirt that she was wearing when he left for london… i think that was forshadowing even though most people already knew that she was going to say no because of the spoilers.

Also i think it was ok for logan to say all or nothing (don’t get me wrong, i loved rory and logan together) but he had proposed and she said no, his ego had to have been hurt beyond belief.

I think I have to agree with bits from both sides of this GG debate.

What happened with L&L is common. It’s gone on in other relationships I know where pride and fear overshadows what’s truly important.

Also, misunderstandings give way to degrees of confusion, reluctance and pain…

And what Logan did by reacting the way he did because his ego and feelings were hurt was understandable but giving her an “all or nothing” instead of compromising until the girl is ready to make that giant leap, was totally unfair!

After everything he’s done in the past, Logan should know better than to make that kind of demand.

He should have met her halfway and discussed an alternate option where he can still have her but give her the chance to spread her postgraduate wings.

    Now, about complicated-indecisive little Rory…

I can understand her reluctance and fears of marrying too young. Because I did it and have wished I had waited before saying yes and complicating my life when I wasn’t ready to at the time.

However, it’s not like she’s made any attempts at seeing things from both sides. She hadn’t taken into consideration that marriage isn’t an end to a means. It’s not the end of the world where she’s have to hang up her journalist gloves and put on an apron with deep pockets for baby bottles while Logan goes off to make the bacon.

I know plenty of women who work and have a husband while they wait to have kids. Plus, I know plenty of women who also have long engagements instead of just saying “I Do” and make the time to travel back and forth. Because long distance relationships aren’t always unsuccessful.

L&L is another story when it comes to marriage or no marriage. Which I think their main problem wasn’t that he didn’t want to marry her but that he’s lousy at communication and letting others in when things get rough or when priorities have to shift to accommodate changes (sinc
