Gilmore Girls Cancellation Speculations

by Arieanna on May 9th, 2007

There are a lot of speculations about how Gilmore Girls ultimately came to be cancelled.

It was not a surprise to Alexis Bledel or Lauren Graham, both of whom felt it was time to move on. Each felt the production schedule to be too demanding, and the plot satisfactorily tied up at the end of the season.

However, if you listen to Lauren Graham’s Ellen interview, it did sound like the ultimate decision was not hers.

The network had negotiated for Gilmore Girls to return for a shortened Season 8 - just 13 episodes. Along with a hefty pay hike, things seemed all ready to go. But, in the end, they broke apart. Here are some speculations as to why:

The girls had agreed to a 13 week season with a very generous pay increase. All that was needed was the signatures. Then, after the contacts had been drawn up and approved by everyone’s legal team, the girls came back and told the network that they wanted to change the number of episodes down to 8. That was the deal breaker. It wasn’t worth it to the network. - SassyPaws at twop

In the end, perhaps time was simply against us. The negotiations were prolonged and I personally think everyone just gave up. And it does sound like Lauren Graham was sad about it:

Apparently the girls were under the impression that the advertisers had threatened the CW with withdrawing all network ad money if they did not deliver Gilmore’s coveted females teen audience. That led the girls to believe that they had the backing of the advertisers and could force the network do anything they wanted. They greatly miscalculated since apparently the advertisers are really pleased with the crop of new pilots and, though they like GG, they aren’t that concern with its demise.

Despite the public persona that has been presented by Lauren, according to my sources, she was totally shocked when the network ended negotiations and is not happy at all with the fallout that is rippling through Hollywood. - SassyPaws at twop

I really do understand how Lauren and Alexis could get tired. It was not just the number of episodes, but how long it took to film each one. Such extremely long days, back to back. I think the negotiations should have revolved around spreading that out, personally.

    My vision from Argentina

Hi to everybody I was trying to wrte in my native language but I could not addmy comment

    Anyway I´ll write in english
I loved the serie, and I really feel pain when I read that because “commercial specualtions” had deciden that it´s over
    I ask
GG it´s over because in the series people can´t see sexual, violence, drugs, scens???
All the actors were excellents and it means:
    - They never appear in TV, radio, magazines, tec due scandall
    - Lauren brings her familira story and i suppose her mesage was “love your famiñly”
    - Alexis, I know that your father is argentine and your mother mexican , I´m sure they teach you good things
    - Scott, I never mind if you love sor not Lauren, you ever shows that life is important
    - The other actors I never saw any wrong message
    CONGRATULATIONS FOR ALL THE TEAM
    EXCELLENT WORK

Folks…neither the stars nor the network care what we think or want.

Let’s just set up an imaginary last episode….Rory gets her dream job and Logan follows her (you know …”If you lead, I will follow you, anywhere…”)

Loralie and Luke get married and have twins and move to the Twickem (sp?) house and live happily ever after with all of the folks of Stars Hollow around them.

There…just pretend that is the last show. :-)

so much left to be said and no time to tell it in. that just doesn’t seem fare to the fans who
have been loyal from the very beginning. you fail to show the same respect that fans have shown to all those that we kept so wonderfully
employed. where’s the thanks in that?

I was so upset when i heard the series was ending
    i actaully cried.
how could they end the show now?
i think they should atleast do 13 more episodes to clear things up
its not fair because the whole “lorelai back with christopher” was a complete waste of time for the show
she belongs with luke and everybody knows it
and now that they are just getting back together they are going to end it?
no they arent i wont let them
well they said 7th heaven was ending too and its still going today so we will have to see

I am just really upset how this show ended!!! This was my favorite show that I could watch with my mother on Tuesday nights but now it is gone!!!! Lauren was on Ellen and she acted like everything was okay that it is Done over with!!! She did not look even sad or anything!! My mom looked at me and said “SHES NOT EVEN SAD ABOUT THE WHOLE THING” She announced it the crowd was sad she would just say it’s ok it’s ok. Well I said NO IT IS NOT!!! I think that is so stupid that they wanted to go to 8 instead of 13!!! Your going to get the episodes done then you can say GOODBYE to the show I was so upset!! There are going to be question that are going to be unanswered!! Is Luke and Lorelai going to get married, how kids What you really don’t know. Fans have been waiting for this moment for a long time since the season 3 dream!!! I cried to much over this!! This is so terrible that they just don’t want to just come back for 13 amazing 8 and half years of the show!!! Well I just want to say to the fans KEEP TRYING TO GET THE GIRLS BACK!! Maybe we will have a MOVIE!!!

I agree!!!! So many questions that need to be answered. It just doesnt seem realistic for them to be back where they started in the very first episode where its just Lorelai & Rory. Rory has to be with Logan! And Lorelai HAS TO be with Luke, thats so wrong if they arent together. Yes they are ‘best friends’ but come one Lorelai n Luke have been 7 years in the making and Logan is meant for Rory!!!

  • Chandra
    May 11, 2007 at 8:25 am

So, I know that Lauren was very concerned that if Lorelai and Rory got married, moved on, etc. then it wouldn’t be about the girls anymore. But I don’t agree. I think that they can certainly be married and still hold a close relationship. The face she made when Logan asked for Rory’s hand seemed I don’t know, selfish, as if she had to keep Rory to herself. I think it would be interesting to see the dynamic of their relationship together while married. In the course of life, people are close, and personal relationships are important especially mother and daughter, but even mothers and daughters deserve happiness outside of that relationship. Mothers and daughters can support and encourage through everything. I think that idea should have been explored. They should have let them move forward. No one cared about Lorelai and Christopher, and they married. People have put true emotion into Lorelai and Luke and Rory and Logan, and we were denied the satisfaction of seeing it brought through to completion. I am so sad.

Cw50 is going to lose alot of people who are use to watching them. If they cancel Gilmore Girls forever, everyone will know it will suck! The series finale is probably going to be terrible. I’m sooooo disappointed.

there needs to be a 8th season and then some. The gilmoregirls is a excellent show the best show on tv.Let there be a compromise!!!!!!! Lorelai and luke must get married and logan must come back to hartford were his roots are and him and rory get back together or even married and maybe have kids we must see rory go into her ocaupation and now that chris rorys dad is in her life we need to give him a chance to play out the daddy role not just the father role there is so much more to this show..take breaks but come back gilmoregirls come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I realize that shows cannot last forever however I wanted you to know that I teared up while watching a preview of next weeks final episode. I am a single mom myself and have enjoyed watching the Gilmore Girls journey unfold each season. I am sure going to miss it; it was the highlight of my week. I hope that you will continue to show reruns throughout the summer. I will also continue to watch ABCFamily daily for the oldies but goodies of the show.

I loved the ‘heart’ and humanity of the series. It was hip and ironic without being mean spirited and exploitative.

I haven’t been this upset about a show ending since the cancelled “The Six Million Dollar Man.” (Yes, I’m 38 years old - and a married man - and I loved the show - at least since 2002)

Last Friday I saw the news on Huffington Post and there were all kinds of snarky comments by men about how theywanted more T and A on GG or something. Jesus, does everything have to be about porn?

GG was for me, like a modern Andy Griffith Show about a single parent whose not ‘damaged’ or neurotic - but still has her problems.

I think that you are right but I can’t understand all this, really.I’m from Portugal and i love our girls. I really can’t understand this ending. At Ellen Show Lauren Graham has you said before said that she shouted the last episode without knowing that the show will end. Is stupid and strange because the negociations started some time after, and nobody explain what happen.I’m frustated because i really love our girls and this end is fast and strange too.Another season is perhaps important to end really the show like it suppose to be. Lorelai should have the wedding that she always dream of,rory shouldn’t end alone,What was that?! Logan and Rory breakup?!, is too saaad…and i hate it..a lot…eeiiiii ALEXIS why don’t you talk about the end of Gilmore Girls?? we want to know what happen…!! Sorry if my english is not the best…! I’m really saad..

    May 11, 2007 at 3:35 pm

I know that they should have one more season it’s not going to hurt just to come back for one more and make it a good one!!! This sucks really bad!! I know it is the series finale but do you thik that they could bring it back again maybe not since Lauren and Alexis are tired of the Gilmore Girls that they don’t want to do anymore!! Let’s just say they are babies (sorry for saying that) tell you what I think they really don’t care how it ends since there no showing very well!! That ’s my opinion on this whole thing!!

  • Jennifer
    May 11, 2007 at 4:25 pm

I think it is ridiculous to end the series like this. they could of at least added like 2 episodes if they HAD to take it off this year. They started too much stuff to just end it like this. Lorlei and luke are just starting something and how can Rory and Logan just end like this. well i think you should bring it back because 7th Heaven came back and there is only 2 of the real kids on it even more so they need 2 keep Gilmore Girls cause it’s stupid to end it like that and everyone loves it

  • Laura
    May 11, 2007 at 7:32 pm

I totally agree with Chandra’s comments. If the series wraps up like I expect it to, I don’t think that I’ll even like watching the reruns. What makes the show interesting for me is the hope that they’ll find some happiness and stability in relationships. Without that hope, I’m not interested in it. Series like these offer a nice escape from reality. I watch it b/c it makes me feel good. This anticipated ending, however, just leaves too many stories incomplete without any hope of resolution.

As much as it pains me to say this, the show will not come back. no matter how many times we ask for it. Gilmore Girls is over.It still doesnt seem real to me. In my opinion, it ened the worst way possible. I mean really! We are left alone to who Rory will end up with for the rest of her life( thank the Lord it isint Logan) and we dont know if Lorelai and Luke ever get married, they could break up again. I just think it was a stupid move to end it now. Even 8 episodes would have been fine. Seriously. Just to give us a satisfying ending. Dont they always say ” I want to thank my fans, Without you this would not be possible..blah blah blah”? Well the fans, the ones who stuck with GG through good times and bad, are not happy with the ending. I know it had to end sometime, but in such a sucky way is such a dissapointment. Im kind of a little angry. But whatever, They obviously dont care, if they did, i would be looking forward to the series finale, but im not.
CW!!! VERY DUMB MOVE!!! YOU LOST ALOT OF VIEWERS!

Not going to leave a comment. All has been said on the above posts.Sad that the cw couldn’t agree on at least 8 episodes.CW doesn’t care about the fans because if they did they would have agreed on the 8 episodes. Will never watch anything on the CW ever again.

Okay, I agree with every one, and this show was my favorite. I no longer have any reason to watch CW any more. Im so pissed off that they could nto even give us a real conclusion. It was so blunt, why did they need to break Rory and Logan up the second to last episode they were planning to end the series. And Lorelai and Luke, we have been waiting for a wedding since the first season. Sure it is implied that they are back together we have waited 7 years to actually SEE it!!!!

  • Mark the end in style
    May 15, 2007 at 7:04 pm

After all the babbling they did episode after episode it would be nice if the end maked a truly remarkable ending. The CW should have made it where some one made Luke expreemly mad like almost road rage type mad and made it as he was racing through town when his brakes snap and he wipes out Lorali and that annoying French idiot Michele that work for her dead in the street. Like in Mean girls or even Final destination style of smash. Then every one in town starts singing in a overwhelming joy of appreciation.

I was shocked and horrified to read that Gilmore Girls has been cancelled. It has the best writing on all of television and has been the best show on for the last seven years. Although only a season 8, and only 8 or 13 episodes would be disappointing, at least that would give time to wrap it up. Lorelei and Luke belong together! We have waited for this for seven years. Yes, Rory is now grown-up, but so are we! The station should at least respect the viewers enough to give us eight really steaming episodes of Lorelei and Luke finally, absolutely recognizing that they love each other and should commit forever. Just like real life. We don’t all want to date forever. There is such a thing as true love and marriages made in heaven, and this was something that we viewers waited to see come to fruition all of these years. Out of respect to us, it should happen. We are the true citizens of Stars Hollow who love these characters, and we want to see them come to a happy ending in a beautiful wedding that honors the premise of two adults getting married.
By the way, that would not have to be the ending of the show. Lorelie and Luke and Rory could actually go on, with a bantering relationship between Lorelei and Luke as they observed Rory in her youthful romances and career moves.
My last comment, did you know that it is illegal to watch the Gilmore Girls in Saudi Arabia? Why? Guess they don’t like to see strong, independent, yet human, flawed, vunerable INTERESTING women. Is this how far we have sunk now? I hope not. WB, have some respect for your audience and, at minimum, tie up the show’s loose ends. And if you have to pay a couple of extra bucks to do it, I’m sure you’ll make the money back on DVD sales. Whereas anything you save with this cancellation will be lost because you will have alienated your audience. If you have no loyalty to us, why should we be loyal to you?

Hello, I’m from Honduras and I’ve been watching this show since the first season, I agree with everyone, the end of GG… suck big time, the audience deserves if not 13 or 8, at least one more episode, like the last episode of Dawson’s Creek, years later. It’s just not fair for all the fans, and I agree with Alice, It’s a total lack of respect to all the people that have been there every tuesday nigth for 7 seasons watchig the show, and wishing that Lorelie and Luke get together, Please don’t leave the end of the show like that, is very dissapointing.

I’ve not seen one show on WB or CW what ever it is, since the last Gilmore Girls show. They screwed the fans. The network is and will be block on all of our TV’s until they bring them back.No 7th Heaven,No Gilmore Girls,..not worth it.
