Emily & Richard’s Song
I added a million little details to the recap of "Unto the Breach" Lots of quotes and material. I’ll pull a few out into their own posts, like this one. Emily & Richard’s song. Now, who didn’t just love that? It was so out of character for them!

Here are the lyrics:
Richard: You’re the top. You have graduated.
Emily: You’re the top. Your grandparents are elated.
Richard: Newspaper Editor. Phi Beta Cappa, wow!
Emily: You’re a revelation. A huge sensation.
Richard: You should take a bow.
Emily: You are done. No more school for you.
Richard: There is nothing… now that you can’t do.
Emily: You make us proud. We’ll sing it loud.
Richard: It’s true!
Together: ‘Cause our Rory, you’re a Bulldog through and through!
So sweet!

I think it seemed out of character, but since the show is ending, it was a neat way to see where Lorelai and Rory get some of their quirky and creative personality characteristics. It’s always fun to see your parents come out of their shell.
It also shows how the girls influence the parents.
I remember when I first met my in-laws they were very religious, strict, and serious - as the years went by I got to see moments where they popped out of their shell and did something unique and crazy. Those are good moments in life!

I thought that it was a funny and sweet way for Richard and Emily to express the way they felt about Rory graduating. I had just seen the play at my high school the weekend before. And seeing their version of “You’re the Top” from Anything Goes made me laugh. It was a little out of character but I didn’t care.

I think not so out of character, recalling some of Richard & Emily’s comments on their behavior during their college days. I do believe Emily was a scamp and Richard, admittedly, running naked thru the yale campus.
I think that sometimes parents are so determined to make their kids into their image and likeness that they put away their childish things in favor of a grown-up acceptable-to-society manner. It didn’t work with Lorelei but, ah ha, Rory was their great white hope and she succeeded where Lorelei failed because Lorelei was willing and able to let Rory be her own person. And maybe, just maybe, they recognize that achievement.
