Gilmore Girls 7.22 “Bon Voyage” Open Mic
Gilmore Girls 7.22 "Bon Voyage" - SERIES FINALE OPEN MIC
My live recap will begin in another post at 8pm PST. But I know thousands of you are going to be seeing Gilmore Girls before me, just from the timezones.
This is an Open Mic post. For everyone who needs someone to talk to about the episode - to rant, to rave, and to discuss it all, as it happens. Well, for those of you with computers close enough to the tv, anyway ;)
Was it a good series finale? What did you like or not like about it? Discuss the big stuff, and the nitty gritty details. Usually we do this on the recap post, but I want to open this up to be an even more interactive night. After all, this is a moment that we will never have again.
I will join you for a lively discussion. Order a pizza. Grab some candy and pop. And enjoy the last episode of Gilmore Girls with thousands of fans virtually-beside-you watching too.
Watch the Trailer, Director’s Cut Trailer, and Extended Trailer, if you haven’t already. And feel free to spoil yourselves with the latest spoilers on tonight’s finale.
Chat amongst yourselves. I’ll see you soon!

oh my god. this is so deppressing!! say it isn’t so! i only started watching GG three years ago in reruns and now its ending! what gives? i’ll admit it, i am most likely going to be crying throughout the whole episode. oh my god this just sucks so much!

this just makes me mad. what else is there to say? the cast members have all pretty much said that they don’t like the ending…everyone except alexis bledel?? where is she in this and why isn’t she saying anything?

Mars, she isnt saying anything because she knows this is all her fault and she feels guilty and embarassed.

i hope she does feel bad! this is so disrespectful to the fans who have loved that show and stuck by it. we’re the reason they have careers! and they can’t even be kind enough to at least end the show in a way that makes sense! geez! it doesn’t make sense…if i were lauren or alexis, after such a rocky start this season, i would not want the last 7 years of my life and work to be remembered like this.

They talk for a min then they kiss….and then that was all you saw of them kissing, but you can tell at the end of the show what is going to happen between them.

OMG! That was so depressing, especially the part when Lorelai cried over Rory leaving. I have to say that I wasn’t satisfied with the Luke and Lorelai ending because it seemed like they left us hanging. Does anybody agree that this seemed more like a season finale?

it was an okay show…
not the best ending.
i’m so sad right now…
it’s over.

No closure what so ever. The only people who have closure are the ones who have cashed the paychecks. This ending was open and needs to be closed. This wasn’t an ending it was an opening to the next season. It set it up. and for the actors not to give their loyal fans something at the end of all this is wrong. They need to pull a 7th Heaven and end this for us all

I believe a lot of the cast thought that this seemed like a SEASON finale as well. This would have made a great season finale, but I really think we were cheated for a series finale. There is so much left in the air. More than enough material for at least 13 more episodes. So sad. When Lorelai was sitting on Rory’s bed…very touching. Very GG.

I’m not ready for this. It’s not right. They didn’t give us enough Luke and Lorelai or Rory and Lorelai. They never actually said goodbye.
It was so depressing, I was crying like the entire time and I still am. I just can’t believe that it’s over for good. That they are never coming back. I can’t put into words how sad I am right now.
It was a good episode but it shouldn’t have been the series finale.

For some reason I actually really thought this was a good ending to the show. I have been so mad that this wasn’t going to resolve anything and I still think that they should have filmed a series finale that was written specifically as the seires finale but for what was, it was good. I cried through the whole thing. Everyone said goodbye, and Lorelai and Rory were close as ever. And the Luke and Lorelai story was open ended but I think we all know they end up together. However, I still wish we would have gotten a real finale.

As endings go, this was a pretty good one. It obviously could have gone on to another shortened season too. However, sometimes leaving something to the imagination is more enticing.
Clearly Luke & Lorelei will be together again. To what degree, who knows? But they are on the path.
Richard & Emily & Lorelei are obviously on a path of understanding, which I found delightful, watching Richard blubbering while Emily tries to remain stoic.
I will miss this wonderful little show.

Maybe just maybe Gilmore Girls was wacthed so much on the series finale that they will have to put up a new season. I will really miss GG it will be so weird watching reruns with no new season to look foward to the next year on abcfamily

the series finale did no justice to the whole storyline of the show. luke and lorelai’s story is unfinished and rory’s alone. finales arent supposed to leave fans with questions. we’re supposed to be happy and right about now i could cry. they need to come back for season 8.

I wish everyone would stop blaming the actors for the show ending. WE have no idea the stress and pressure they were under for the past SEVEN YEARS to make this show as spectacular as it was. The press has made it clear that the decision came took the cast by surprise since they were pretty sure they were going to sign. What the CW finally wouldn’t bend on was Alexis and Lauren asking for an Eight episode arc instead of thirteen. So, ultimately, it was the decision of the studio.
That being said, I was extremely satisfied with the series finale. I was crying throughout the entire thing, Lauren was absolutely magnifiscient and I got all nostalgic at the series ending scene mimicking the ending scene of the pilot episode. True, things were left open ended. But we were left with a feeling of “Everything’s going to be okay” and that’s all I could ask for.
Did anyone else cry when they saw the Star’s Hollow crowd going beserk while it was raining out!?
Goodbye Star’s Hollow. Goodbye Lorelei and Rory. Your story has touched my life.

i almost feel more baffled than anything. how surreal was that episode. it was almost like a caricature of an episode. wtf. soo…in the previous episode, logan proposes suddenly, rory refuses, he walks away, and…that’s it. sorry folks! this whole finale was just so abrupt and visibly quickly written and thrown together. all the uncharacteristically sappy lines made me vomit. i’m so disgruntled right now. this is just obviously the product of a very quick, unexpected end to the show, i guess. ugh! i feel like everything is tainted now. pms and shitty gilmore girls finale do not mix well.

it was …so-so… but for me it didn’t really matter how good or bad it was. My show is over… I can’t stop crying.. I’m gonna watch it again at 10. but it was great how the ending ended as it did in the very first ever eppisode.. That was nice… I’ll cry again at ten. uuggh!! why does it have to be over??!!! but yeah.. it was so-so… but honestly how do you capture such an amazing show in one hour!? that has to be very, very dificult

just finished watching the show…
it wasn’t that bad actually.
i would probably think differently if i hadn’t had built up that it was going to be terrible. it was a terrific season finale, but for what could be thrown together, it wasn’t the worst series finale i’ve seen.
it seemed really quick to me. like there was more to be said and more moments that needed to be had. such as L/L. they needed to be together last episode or at least in the beginning of this one. we are all so excited about them finally getting together again that time just flew by for us. they kiss and bam! it’s over. no real closure for ALL the cast members. sookie didn’t say goodbye and neither did the rest of the town…literally. did you see her say goodbye to anyone other than richard and emily??
i am happy and i welled up, wishing that they would return next year.
i didn’t have time to process it.
i am just getting over the month long break!! what was that?? and then it’s over. that sucked!!
hopefully a movie will come out or something that can fill in the gaps that were left.
goodbye gilmore girls!

trying to wrap up an entire series in one hour with little to no planning is not do-able, as we have just seen. it’s like trying to write a 20 page research paper for a class the night before it’s due. you CAN do it, but it will be disorganized, poorly written, and probably schmaltzy. case in point.

exactly lesliy, it needed an extra hour or half hour.. i mean, it’s been going on for SEVEN YEARS.. it’s the least they could do for the fans….it lacked substance…

we should start a thread of favorite gilmore girls quotes to help us cope with our pain. one of my personal faves is when lorelai and emily go to the spa (i don’t know which season) and the woman asks them if they want this or that treatment or something, and emily says something like, “oh, yes. we plan on leaving here totally different people.” and lorelai goes, “yes–i’m going to be ted nugent.” HAHAHA.

there were so many moments with gilmore girls that i actually, physically laughed out loud. THAT is something. i mean, how often do you laugh out loud at a tv show?
i loved the bit with the rose centerpiece at richard and emily’s and the whole convo of emily arranged them herself, and how she’d missed her calling, etc. and lorelai goes, “Well done, everyone! Well done!” and emily says, “oh, stop it.” lorelai says, “what? that was just such a nice little civilized moment…”

season 2 paris basically comes out of nowhere and rory asks “what r u..a pop-up book from hell?”
Lesley
May 15, 2007 at 6:02 pm
sarah–i’m so with you. kirk is always funny. the “cat kirk/human kirk” thing was awesome. he thought it was a boy, and then he retracts that because, “it hasn’t really exposed its underside to me yet.” and concluding the convo, lorelai goes, “well…here’s hopin’ your cat exposes itself to you soon.” kirk: “from your mouth to god’s ears.”
and taylor–what was taylor’s deal? was he married? did he have kids? was he a gay man obsessed with the norman rockwell-esque integrity of starr’s hollow? these are the things we should consider.

I’ve been dreading this moment ever since the announcement - I even dreamed Saturday I was watching the finale and crying knowing there were only a few minutes left and it would be done - no more new Gilmore Girls to look forward to on Tuesdays - ever. It was so hard to believe that the time had come.
It made it all the more strange that Lorelai kept saying ‘I thought I had more time’, ‘it’s too soon’, etc. My heart was screaming ‘Yes! It is!’
Yes, many of the endings were contrived and it was a bit forced with all the emotional outbursts from so many characters practically overlapping each other, but in some ways they said things we always hoped they’d say (Richard’s ‘it takes a remarkable person to inspire all this’) and almost fittingly left some things unsaid (Emily pushing inn renovations to push a loan and keep the Friday dinners going, to stay close to Lorelai).
I did like the ‘return of the sight gags’ - town lined up behind Miss Patty’s door for the secret meeting, setting up right behind the girls & taking the tables away, etc. I’ve really missed those recently - my all time fave was Lane running through the town square waving her arms around while the purple hair dye was on her head.
It was also nice to see a bit of what all the Stars Hollow townies are known for in all the interactions leading to the party (too bad Taylor didn’t have to comb his beard!), and to see Michel again one last time at the inn.
One character I missed - Mrs. Kim! I’m not sure what she would have said at the party, but perhaps they could have had her even off to the side watching the boys or something…
Christiane Amanpour’s cameo was a treat, and fitting to bring Rory’s character full circle (e.g. “I want to be Christiane Amanpour”) - she’ll be travelling and reporting on the world as she sees it (although not a complete Gilmore full circle, unless Barack Obama makes a swing through Fez).
I too wish there was more coming, have a horrible empty feeling knowing it’s over, and wasn’t even consoled when my husband said ‘Well, you’ve got all those DVDs to watch again and again…’ Well, it’s not the same thing - he sort of understood when I said that before I could watch the old eps while still wondering what the future would hold for the characters. Now? Well, I can watch through Dean, Jess, Logan, etc…but I know for Rory, it all ends in Iowa - and there’s a bookend at the finish of the story.
If nothing else, the series finale had my mother and I on the phone crying with each other right after it ended - discussing the characters as if they were our real friends and family, and debating the dynamics of their relationships.
That was one of the show’s real strengths all along - to explore those dynamics and give us love and laughs along the way. Something for mothers, daughters (and even a few husbands) to all watch and enjoy together.
For that, I have to thank the series and everyone involved - personally, they’ve added something to my life and I feel genuinely grateful for having been touched by it.
Well, off to deplete the rest of the tissue box, and maybe make some…
coffee.

I noticed how emotional many of the actors got in their scenes right from the beginning of the show. The only time Alexis became emotional was when she would look at Lauren and talk. Other than that, there were no tears in her eyes when conversing with the other cast. However, Lauren and the rest of the cast had tears in their eyes constantly, even Scott. I’m sure it was a very emotional time filming. I just can’t feel Alexis was into this filming, it didn’t show other than when she was in scenes with Lauren.
Sad to see the writers failed the fans again. But we should have known…..they’ve failed the fans most of season 7.
Fans were shorted - again.

UGH…I have watched the episode. I couldn’t even cry during it. I was too numb. After it was over, and I knew it was really OVER. I curled up in a ball and cried, complaining that I need coffee, and pizza, and chinese….and junk food. After about thirty minutes I finally got up and got some coffee. I don’t have money for any of the other things I want, or need to comfort myself. I am still numb, and can’t even bring myself to read any more about this tonight. I am so sad. The episode was good, but was definately more of a season that a series finale. *cries* I am going to wallow now.

In response to favorite quotes, I think I have to go with “the ultimate gift ship set sail a long time ago, it’s probably in Figi by now”
I really think they had to know it was a series finale not season, otherwise they would have not done the last scene to mimic the last scene of the pilot. The banter between L and R while planning the roller coaster trip came the closest to old times as it has all season. Otherwise, not impressed at all. I am all done with the CW.

Can’t another network take over making the show, like WE or Lifetime? Why can’t someone like ABC Family agree to their terms of just 8 episodes, per season, when we know they have lots of money? This show was not just for one age group but for girls and mothers, and everyone inbetween, and all kinds of relationships were explored and I agree I laughed out loud many times. IT CAN’T JUST BE OVER! BUMMER!

My final note to the CW and Lauren and Alexis……this ending didn’t close the story or make the fans grateful.
We just needed closure and you didn’t give it to us after spending 7 years with you! :(
Now I’m just feeling stupid for taking the time to watch this show. It wasn’t the ending Amy promised so many moons ago.
Amy was about happy endings…..not pathetic mid-stream same as it ever was………
Oh well, it’s over. And the CW sucks except for this show. Won’t even watch it again …such a waste of a good talent group.
You were all great! Luke, Loralie, Rory, Emily, Richard, Lane, Zach, Sookie, Jackson, Ms. Patty, Babette, Kirk, Taylor, Lulu, Gypsy, Ceasar, Andrew, etc, etc….
Tuesday won’t be the same without you all………..

Ugh all I can say is what the hell? That cannot be the series finale because it did not do anything justice. The Luke and Lorelei kiss and so called reunion was pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This should have been a season finale, I repeat a SEASON FINALE!
This is utterly disrespectal to fans of the show. I have lost all respect for Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as well as the producers. Not impressed at all. I will not watch any CW programs ever again.

Ok, ha ha this is my all time favorite!
Lorelai: Kirk asked me out.
Rory: Shut up!
Lorelai: Yesterday.
Rory: That’s so sweet!
Lorelai: Rory!
Rory: What are you gonna wear? Ooh, you should wear your dress with the ponies on it, I bet he likes ponies.
Lorelai: You’re not serious.
Rory: I bet you’ll have a good time.
Lorelai: “Hello, headmaster Charleston, this is my stepdad, Kirk. Try not to make any sudden movements, he’s a fear biter!”
Rory: OK, so how are you gonna let him down?

I feel exactly how Lorelai felt at the very end of the episode. It’s too early to say goodbye. We need more time. Since the show only had moderate ratings, it was truly a show made for the fans. I feel like we need another season, more closure. I want to be able to say, “Ok, this is the last season premiere.” We need more preparation for this kind of finale! I’ll miss this show so much.

I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this episode. and believe me, I am a die hard fan who has been in mourning for Gilmore Girls these past two weeks so I was not looking forward to the end. But i felt really satisifed, even on the Luke and Lorelai front. I mean granted there wasn’t a huge kiss or whatever but to me what was more meaningful was the way that Lorelai looked at Luke when she said “luke” and the silence before he said “I like to see you happy.” My heart melted because it was such a sweet moment between the two and that in itself was a good way to get them together and show their real feelings (that and the kareoke scene). I am sure people will disagree with me on that front though and though I would have loved to see a wedding, I am strangely satisfied with that ending. I thought the finale was consistent not only with the characters but also with the the show’s theme and with the season in itself. I didn’t think it was as rushed as some might have thought; they have building the whole rory career issues since mid season, and the whole growth taht both L/L needed before going back to each other, and even there have been hints this season of Lorelai and her mother getting alnog more. I WAS disapointed on two storyline fronts not necessarily related to the finale but to the season though 1) getting lane pregnant and not allowing her to have pursue her rock career 2) no kirk and lulu marriage! that would have been hilarious to watch. but other than that, I am suprisingly pleased. btw arieanna, I love love this site and your descriptions of the show. i will miss reading your synopsis.

I am so forlorn at the thought that my very favourite show of all time has bid farewell. I’m 45, so I’ve seen many of these people in other projects throughout the years. Where today will you find a show that combines class, intelligence, substance, meaning and wit, with an emphasis on brotherhood and sisterhood something we need to see much more of these days, to me that is what Gilmore Girls exemplified a sense of community, people who genuinely cared for one another, sincerity, and you felt you had this very close bond with them of which we all felt through these blessed 7 years of Gilmore Girls. The cast Aaaaaaaaaaamazing, again, where will you find a show that spans generations, from baby’s to aging baby boomers, most aging baby boomers can’t find work on television, sadly. Wow, Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Sally Struthers (Babette), Kelly Bishop and Edward Hermann these people were superb intelligent incredible in their roles on Gilmores you could feel their love and passion for the show. I remember watching Liz Torres dance when I was a kid on television, she was wonderful, and Sally in All In The Family and wow to see these people all together weaving a most incredible masterpiece that will always be Gilmore Girls was a gift to us indeed, something I will miss terribly. Scott Patterson (Luke) to me was one of my favourite characters on the show he would always go that extra mile he had alot of heart. Gilmore’s had that old timey quality class and style of a bygone era that I often felt transported there. That is what I will miss so much. Where are you going to hear Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Mark Twain mentioned again like they were in our beloved Gilmore Girls, hear Big Band music, watch Alexis and Keiko pick out their CD’s from floorboards, I Loved that! Or for that matter hear Swing music and see Rory all dressed up in that era’s attire! Wow, what a show! Sorry if I’m going on here, but I cried throughout the show knowing that Tuesday nights or television will never ever be the same again without Gilmore Girls. I can’t see another show like this coming to fruition again, Gilmore Girls was integrity! When you wanted to get away you could tune in and feel you were a part of the family of Star’s Hollow, what will we ever do without them! On another note, this show also had a very very special meaning for me, I have watched it for all the 7 years that we were so fortunate that the entire cast decided to grace us with their craft. My Beloved Feline Male Maine Coon Sprouty (Cat), I’m a Veterinarian, recently passed away in my arms here on our bed and Gilmore Girls was our favourite show to watch together. He was very sick for the previous 2 years and required fluids and medicine he had Chronic Renal Failure, he was the sweetest, gentlest, most loving companion, with a strength and courage that was unbelievable, spritely and very agile right up to his last few days with me. He was just shy of 17 when he left us. Well, every show I would sing him the Gilmore Girls theme song, (Carole King), it was our fave show to cuddle to and watch, I would sing him, Wherever Sprouty leads, Mommy follows, Anywhere that Sprouty wants me to, If Sprouty needs his Mommy to be with him, I will follow where Sprouty leads

part of my post is lost now as my laptop shut down, and I don’t have a copy of it.
I wanted to say that I sang him that as he took his last few breaths in my arms holding and kissing him, so tonights show was very very heartbreaking for me. I hope they are continuing Gilmore Girls in Heaven since we are only going to get the reruns here now. Please keep my beloved Sprouty in your prayers, I would greatly appreciate that. He would sit up when he would hear Rory speaking, he seemed to like Rory’s voice. She had that Audrey Hepburn style and sharp wit. How I miss little Sprout.
I thought we would have been graced with a little mention in the credits, the fans, like perhaps a “Thanks for the ride” or something to that effect. I found the show very hurried and thrown together, much more justice should have been given the series finale considering the exhaustive amount of tireless effort and dedication the cast put into 7 wonderful joyous and meaningful seasons of Gilmore Girls. To me, Tuesday nights finale just lacked the respect and integrity the show deserved. I found it unfair to the shows devoted and loyal fanbase. I wrote so much more in my previous post part of which I lost which I cannot retrieve.
To me, this was the classiest show on television, intelligent, classy, elegant, witty. Luke was my favourite character, though the talent was the creme de la creme of the acting community. Every character had their own unique style which made the show very refreshing, they managed to take us back to a bygone time yet keep it modern, just a wonderful show. I will miss it greatly. It is truly the end of an era, hope we will see Kelly and Ed in other shows they are just superb! Liz and Sally too, all of them. How about a spinoff called “Luke’s Diner” somewhat like the old “Alice” show from the 70’s!! Gilmore Girls was and will always be class!

“Copper Boom” is my all-time favorite quote, also - along with trying to get rid of the dorm mattress that keeps showing up!
The finale could have been 2 hours long and could have ended with some live footage of interviews with the actors - or their comments on the show - or something more to acknowledge the ending. But not having everything completely settled and finalized was okay - that way we get to picture what happens next to Luke and Lorelai - maybe they get married, but not right away. Maybe Luke still takes the boat trip, but with Lorelai instead of his daughter (since she was the one with all the suggestions about what they should do and where they should stop). Maybe Rory and Logan get back in touch and decide to continue their relationship long distance while Rory is on the campaign trail and then after that she gets a job with a paper in San Francisco and they get back together and eventually get married. I didn’t like Logan at first, but he has really grown and matured and changed lately, so it seems like they could end up together eventually. But we can figure out their futures however we want to - since they didn’t give us anything definite. What do you think? How would all of you write their futures??

I have faithfully watched every episode and have all of the DVDs (which I have also watched repeatedly). I complained and complained before the finale that it could not possibly do the show justice - but I think it did. I hate that the show has ended, but for being an ending, it was a good ending. Stories wrapped up, characters said goodbye, I think it was good. I think there should have been another minute or two of Luke and Lorelai, but besides that, I thought it was wonderful. I felt like it was truly a goodbye.
I wish there was going to be a season 8, but I am satisfied with things the way they are. Things are OK - Rory and Lorelai ended as they began, as best friends. Luke and Lorelai will get back together. Rory said goodbye to Lane. The town got to send Rory off into the world. All in all, it was touching way to say goodbye to a show that we loved. Could there have been more? Probably. But was it satisfying enough as it was? Yes.
RIP Gilmore Girls

Thank you for 7 wonderful seasons.

between
1) April canceling out on the boat trip after Luke had added the hotels that Loreli had suggested
2) Rory not being able to go on the rollercoaster trip
and
3) Cesear making a big deal about being able to run the diner while Luke was gone
We could have gotten a Luke/Loreli romantic getaway in the next season
Damn the CW. Damn them all!!
