Gilmore Girls Reactions

by Arieanna on May 23rd, 2007

It’s been 8 days since the Series Finale of Gilmore Girls. Here are some of the reactions from around the web about the final episode of Gilmore Girls and the cancellation of the series:

Reaction to Gilmore Girls Cancellation:

  • SAD - FayObserver.com: "So this is what you call Grief. I thought I reached the Acceptance Phase pretty fast when I learned this series would end after seven seasons. But perhaps I reached it too quickly and didn’t allow myself enough time to grieve. I guess I was stuck in Denial. Now that the series finale is tonight, I’m not sure I’m ready to really let it go. For almost the entire run of the series, I have hung on to every pop-culture-infused phrase uttered by the fast-talking Lorelai (the excellent Lauren Graham, who really should have been nominated for an Emmy). I’ve cheered her on when she stumbled in her relationships, except for flubbing up things with Luke. I’ve watched Rory transform from a socially awkward bookworm into a young woman who is empowered enough to turn down a wedding proposal. Most of all, I’ve enjoyed watching a show about the bonds between mothers and daughters. You can’t forget about Emily and how much of a role she played in their lives. That’s just one of reason why I’ll miss this show. I hope the finale is satisfying. Only then will I reach Acceptance."
  • RESIGNED - BuddyTV’s Mel: "And the show really hasn’t been the same since Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino left at the end of last season. I myself stopped watching the show for a while earlier this season, because I couldn’t stand the direction they took it. (Mostly I just can’t stand Christopher.)"
  • SAD - Buffalo News’ Robert: "TV characters live in real time. From week to week and from year to year, they come into our homes and they age alongside us. Babies grow into children, and children into teenagers, and teenagers into young adults. Older people turn into even older people. Hair grays, waistlines expand, wrinkles deepen (or sometimes disappear, oddly)."

Reaction to Gilmore Girls Series Finale, "Bon Voyage":

  • DISSATISFIED - TVGuide’s Ausiello: "Like the Grey’s spin-off, it read much better on paper. On screen, it felt rushed, overly shmaltzy and, ultimately, unfulfilling — and the whole thing kind of depresses me."
  • SATISFIED - E Online’s Korbi: "And though creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has earned our undying worship, we must give credit to David Rosenthal for tying Gilmore’s bow in a fitting manner: complete with banter about roller-coaster connoisseurs; one last town meeting to skewer Taylor Doose; quality time with Lane… a Friday night dinner; two touching though covert attempts by Emily to ensure her relationship with Lorelai would continue after Rory’s departure; and Richard’s long overdue seal of approval on Lore’s adult life, not that she needed it. It was simply nice. Also nice? The no-fuss rekindling of her relationship with Luke. No big speeches or dramatic scenarios. Just the right time for a reuniting kiss."
  • SATISFIED - EW’s Karen Valby: "Cheers for the graceful wrap-up of the endlessly frustrating Luke and Lorelai story. When Lorelai hears that it wasn’t Sookie who planned the whole affair, that it was Luke who stayed up all night sewing a patchwork tent of raincoats, well, what’s a girl to do but march across that same street that knocked them on their asses so many times and smooch the guy. I bet many fans will feel cheated that they got but a second of that long-awaited kiss before the camera panned off to focus on the town square. I loved it. I loved that we got to see them reconcile without a lot of words, and that whatever romance they cook up is now their business alone."
  • SATISFIED - TV Squad’s Joel: "This may not have been the way Gilmore Girls was originally supposed to end, but, as it turned out, it was a pretty good way for it to go out… When I think about it, ending the show in such a "rip off the Band-Aid" fashion was best for everyone, including the fans. We had only two weeks to cope with the show’s departure, knowing that the finale was already shot and ready to go… Because of that, there was no speculation, no guessing. And there were also no grand moments, supreme life changes, and the obligatory scenes of someone looking back on an empty room before turning out the lights. It was very understated. And very satisfying."

On all fronts, the news of the cancellation and the ‘completeness’ of the series finale was met with mixed reviews. Some people felt it was time for the show to go. For it to go out peacefully. Others felt cheated. Same goes for the finale - did it rush or did it tie things up nicely?

i was a mixture of satisfied and dissatisfied. the satisying aspect was that the story lines were wrapped up. and it ended on a good note with a good episode. however, the dissatisfying aspect was that it was just good. i was hoping for an opver the top amazing episode, but it was just good. i think that it seemed things were being wrapped up in such haste and i don’t fell that it did justice as a series finale to a show that is so amazing.

Ok, I found some really sad pictures of the former set of Gilmore girls, at least, the parts that are still standing. You have to scroll down a little.

I agree. Last night was awful. I put in the DVDs but it’s just not the same. I miss it so much. For the first time in 7 whole years my Tuesday night was empty.

I only started watching gilmore girls in its 6th season but i had watched it on ABC family then one night i decided to jump in on the WB. I got the 3rd season first and instantly was hooked and enjoyed watching the mother- daughter bond and their fast talking pace. I then got the 4th season and 5th season and fell in lvoe with the new bad boy in the scene:logan huntzberger. Rory started to enter a new faze of her life and logan showed her more to life and seriousness and always work. He should her that she sometimes just needs to live her life. Lorelai went throguh a couple of relationships and i believe they never stuck because LUke was alwalys in her heart. When the series finale came i was hoping for a satifying ending but i also knew it wouldn’t be staisfying enough considering they decided to end it after they had even shot the finale. Gilmore Girls gave us an hour into another world where we could relate or wish we had the famous mother- daughter bond of rory and lorelai. Stars Hollow was filled with quirky characters who without them it would not be stars hollow. I will miss tuesday nights at 8 where we can for a least an hour embark ourselves into another world….

I agree with whoever said that Dave Rosenthal did a wonderful job wrapping up the series. The way he tied it up left much to our own rich imaginations and did not leave us with anything overly dramatic - just the Stars Hollow residents lives going on, as our lives would. Really, Gilmore fans, what more could you ask for.

While I wish it could have been on for a record 10 seasons, it is highly unlikely that would have occurred, given the Palladino departure (and she only really wanted 7).

We had to say goodbye sooner or later.

I really thought the show would go on forever [well I knew the the show had to end sometime]I love Gilmore Girls I don’t know what to do now I feel empty. Once you fall in love with Gilmore Girls you feel like starshollow is your hometown , Loralie is your very cool mom and Rory is your sister, it kinda feels like my family died. Hey but maybe they can make a movie and my T.V. family will be back.
