Lauren Graham to return to tv on NBC

by Arieanna on September 18th, 2007

According to Variety, Lauren Graham has signed a 7-figure development deal with NBC that will see Lauren return to tv.

NBC will develop a series around Lauren Graham - who has reportedly been in high demand by many networks for a comedy or drama project. Writers are being sought out to work with Graham on the new project. John Carrabino will serve as director.

Deal reps one of new NBC boss Ben Silverman’s first major actor signings since he came to the net in June. It also marks a reunion between Graham and NBC casting exec VP Marc Hirschfeld, who worked together a decade ago.

"I cast Lauren on ‘NewsRadio,’ ‘3rd Rock From the Sun’ and ‘Seinfeld’ early on in her career," Hirschfeld said. "I’ve been pursuing her aggressively for the past several years after her outstanding work on ‘Gilmore Girls.’ "

Silverman, meanwhile, cited Graham’s comic voice as a reason for pursuing the the thesp. "She’s so respected in the industry and is a huge get for us," he said.

Lauren says she is excited to work with NBC because of the vision Silverman has for the network. With her typical wit, Lauren adds:

"Also, after having spent so many years representing the frog on the WB, I am especially comforted to be part of the only other network with an animal mascot," she added.

It’s great to see that Lauren Graham will return to television. Even better, that a show is being created for her, which will see Lauren take the commanding role she deserves. Of course, everything is still in development stage at this point. Once the show is conceptualized, it still needs final network backing before it makes it to air.

Of course, we’re still eager to see Lauren Graham complete her Gilmore Girls story arc, through another season or a movie.

Sounds great. But I still miss GG. I hope they make at least 4 more seasons, i’m ready to wait. But they shouldn’t make an end, well season 8 shouln’t be the end. Under 10 seasons GG shouln’t end. Than I even wait years! I wait and hope Lauren and Alexis want to come back to GG for at least 4 more seasons, maybe in 2 years or later however. They will never loose viewers because GG watch people every age. So in two years or even longer all fans still love GG and watch new episodes. Keep signing the GG petition for at least 4 more seasons. LG:”She’s(ASP) either there 100% or not at all” and we want her 100% - no 1000%! At least 11 seasons should GG get! -AT LEAST!-

I must say I am surprised. Didn’t she say she was too tired to continue a series? She used that as an excuse not to sign a season 8. NBC BEWARE!!!!

I am happy got Lauren; she certainly deserves this opportunity.

I just hope they take the time to get good writers and develop a good premise and not just rely on her care the show. There is a limit to what any actor can do and there is a long trail of failed shows with others stars to prove it.

very cool! But that pic. of her is horrible! her face looks kinda like a dragon, and we all know that in real life she’s beautiful. I don’t think that picture should have been allowed to be developed!

i hope she doesnt get so involved with this that she doesnt have time to do a GG movie. that would make me SOOOOO sad :(

    Sep 19, 2007 at 11:49 pm

@Karen - I believe what she said was that she was tired of doing a 1 hour drama type show with the long scripts that gilmore girls had. I remember her saying that she wouldn’t mind doing a half hour show. So I dunno I think you should root for her. =)

I hope she is in a drama with some comedy-similar to gilmore girls. she deserves more than just a 30 minute sitcom ;) she needs a show that will get much praise, with an amazing cast. i just cant wait for her :D

Starr — the funny thing about Lauren saying that she would rather do a half-hour show because the hours are better is that the comment is true only of filmed-before-a-live-studio-audience sitcoms. Other half-hour comedies such as The Office, Earl, Scrubs, 30 Rock, HIMYM, Weeds — they all require the same 16-hour days that one-hour shows require (half-hour sitcoms and half-hour comedies are two totally different things due to the ways cameras are used and scripts are developed, which I won’t go into here).

I think it’s pretty clear that sitcoms don’t play to Lauren’s strengths as an actress even in comedy. What makes Lauren the brilliant actress that she is isn’t the ability to tell a joke, but to create characters of tremendous depth through both comedy and drama, sometimes even at the same time — which is a talent that many sitcom (Jason) actors (Alexander) lack and which is why those sitcom actors usually fail to find a follow-up to their hit show.

Also, it’s worth noting that NBC Veep Hirshfeld, who commendably tried to get Graham as much work as he could back in the 90’s, got overzealous and put her in s4 of NewsRadio. Her casting as Andrea, the neurotic efficiency expert, was supposed to be a permanent addition but the producers and cast rebelled against the network’s micromanaging this way and Andrea disappeared after her fourth appearance on the show. Various cast members of NewsRadio, however, go out of their way on the commentary tracks for their show (including several that Graham *wasn’t* in) to compliment Graham. They liked working with her personally and professionally, she was just stuck in the middle of a bad situation.

So I would hope that NBC Universal would be extremely patient with this development deal and not put anything on the air that isn’t ready. Expectations will be high enough as it is because of the reputation she’s gained from Gg and also because of the bad way that Gg has (temporarily) ended. I would be worried if the deal has an expiration date of one year rather than being a little more open-ended, like three years or so. Rushed shows (ie: anything Jason Alexander has been in since Seinfeld) simply don’t work.

Also, LG’s deal with NBC Uni doesn’t really mean anything toward a Gg revival for a proper conclusion. It’s a lateral move from movies to a TV show — we already knew that any real Gg conclusion was going to have to work around the actors’ current gigs. Now we know that she’s going to be in one place for nine-and-a-half months a year rather than in 4 or 5 places per year.

@Starr: Please let me be bitter. I am still in mourning and with the new fall season starting and no GG I am feeling so sad. Of course I will root for Lauren in everything she does. She gave me 7 years of the best television ever so I will always love her for that. I just still can’t get over the loss of my favorite show. Time heals all though, right?

Karen: No time doesn’t heal all wounds, you just learn how to deal with them. Like, say, signing petitions and joining any campaigns to say “Give us our closure!”
