Amy Sherman-Palladino to direct “The Late Bloomer’s Revolution”

by Arieanna on October 12th, 2007

According to Variety, Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls creator) will make her feature film directing debut with the adaptation of Amy Cohen’s memoirs, The Late Bloomer’s Revolution, starring Sarah Jessica Parker.

Amy will be adapting the novel about "a single woman who, after the death of her mother, develops a bond with her father as they both try to get on with their lives in the dating world", into a screenplay.

The HBO movie has signed on Sarah Jessica Parker for lead in the film. Sarah Jessica Parker will also produce the film with her Pretty Matches partner Alison Benson.

An experienced TV showrunner and director, Sherman-Palladino had been looking to make the move into features. She sparked to the material and saw it as a good match with Parker’s comic skills.

"Character stuff is what I do best, and there is an interesting lady at the center of this who explores a relationship with her father, who’d always been the silent guy in the corner watching TV when her mom was around," Sherman-Palladino said. "The humor is key here, and Sarah Jessica is a great comedienne."

Sarah Jessica Parker is a natural fit for Amy Sherman-Palladino’s wit, and a natural for this script.

According to Publishers Weekly, "it’s hard not to compare characters like John the TV journalist or George the rock star to ‘Mr. Big.’" It would seem the role was meant to be played by Sex and the City star Parker.

Here is some more information about the novel the screenplay will be based upon:

Cohen’s memoir starts with an amusing anecdote about traveling to Prague with her mother, who seems cheerfully oblivious to the fact that the handsome young man who joins them for dinner is far more interested in her than her daughter. Unfortunately, Cohen’s mother is dying of a brain tumor by the end of the chapter, and though the endless kibitzing of her father, who tries to fix Cohen’s love life while dating a string of "older widows and comely divorcees," is entertaining, the other members of her inner circle pale in comparison. Like Candace Bushnell, Cohen was a dating columnist for the New York Observer, with stories that drew liberally upon her friends’ experiences and commentaries—and it’s hard not to compare characters like John the TV journalist or George the rock star to "Mr. Big." Cohen’s misadventures have a much deeper masochistic streak than Sex and the City, even if she copes with setbacks like a virulent face rash with as much self-deprecating humor as she can muster. If the results fail to overturn Bushnell’s legacy as the reigning observer of Manhattan dating life, they make for a perfectly acceptable substitute.

I wonder how many seasons we had got when amy and dan never had left GG? 11,12,13??? Sad… really sad… i’m against an end movie or season 8! GG should break Bonanzas record or should get at least 4 more seasons! Season 7 was a shock an end would be a disaster (movie or season 8). Some fans think GG should go on for at least 4 more seasons and don’t want an end! “Reasons4seasonS”

Hey there! Big fan of the Gilmore Girls! I just finished Rachel Cohn’s series-Ginger bread, Shrimp and Cupcake- they were awesome books, and I read online that you own the movie rights to them! Thats so cool. I was wondering if you were thinking of making them into a movie, I know that they are very teenish(I make up words) books, but comeon there amazing! Please consider it! <3
