Rory and Lorelai are playing ‘1,2,3 he’s yours’ to see who Lorelai’s husband will be - Luke is third after he came to the table, but the exclude him. Kirk is number three - Luke goes to congratulate him. They move to Rory’s turn, but number 1 guy to appear is Dean.

Max calls - after Lorelai trying to getting him to make a gorilla sound to learn her underwear color, they move onto more serious talk. He suggests they move from phone-date to real date.

Rory keeps a list of where Dean is so she can avoid him. Lorelai runs into Luke at "Le Chat Club" where he has just bought meowing potholders for Rachel’s birthday - he is not big on the gift shopping. Lorelai offers to pick up some gift choices for him.

Dean is Lane’s science partner. He wants to know how Rory is. Lane asks if they will get back together. Unfortunately, just then Rory drops in. She runs out.

Lorelai tries to get Rory to ditch school and go shopping. After picking up Rachel’s gift, she went on a Bloomingdale’s spree for new clothes for Luke. He doesn’t want new things. Tells her to take them back - and calls her a mental patient as she chases after him with the suit.

Rory can’t concentrate in class - Paris notices and drops her book to get Rory to wake up. Mr. Medina does too, and repeats the assignment for her benefit. And asks her to stay after class. Max shows his concern for her and the difficulty of the breakup - however, Lorelai had not told Rory that she was talking to Max.

Lorelai won - she got Luke to try on all the clothes. Not to ‘make a new Luke’ but to ’see another side of the old Luke’. As Lorelai is fixing Luke’s belt, Rachel comes in. Looks stunned.

Lane tries to apologize to Rory for protecting her - Rory is tired of people shielding her from everything. They have a small fight. Just then, Lorelai comes by and gets annoyed with Rory’s attitude. Rory retorts about Max. Lorelai says she was protecting Rory - not from Max, but from being the one who was happy to be back with her boyfriend when Rory was still broken up about Dean. Rory shoots back that it doesn’t matter - that she’ll only break up with Max again anyway.

Lorelai comes home after going to the market to find Rory is not there. Instead, she has taken a cab to Hartford. She wanted to get away from her mom and Stars Hollow. Emily seems pleased that Rory ran to her.

Lorelai is in panic mode because she does not know where Rory is. Sookie and Max come over to help. Emily calls Lorelai then to say Rory is there - and advises Lorelai to let Rory go back when she wants to. Lorelai tells Max she is upset Rory ran away - that they had always worked through their issues before.

Max questions why Lorelai had not told Rory - or anybody else - about him. She said it had not come up. Rory seems a bit relaxed after her night away. Emily and Richard are both pleased to have her there.

Lorelai vents to Luke - she went half way to Hartford three times. She is upset that Rory is taking her breakup so hard. The girl who is so nice to everyone is in immense pain and won’t talk about it. They dream up ways to get revenge on Dean. Luke is wearing the new belt Lorelai got him.

Lorelai goes to tell Dean that he’s scum for hurting Rory. But he vents right back - is tired at the town looking at him like a criminal for saying ‘I love you’ to Rory. Though he did break up with Rory, he doesn’t feel like he’s the bady guy. Lorelai looks surprised and leaves.

Lorelai rushes to Rory. Lorelai sympathizes with the need to run, but reminds Rory that their relationship works if they agree to talk. Rory still doesn’t want to talk about Dean, but Lorelai tells her what she got out of Dean and they talk it through. Rory got scared. Lorelai takes some of the blame for that - that she has not taught her daughter about commitment. She doesn’t want Rory to grow up and not be able to say ‘I love you’. She wants Rory to be ready for that moment when it’s right. Lorelai herself is working on being ready for that moment too.

Rory stops by to apologize to Lane. Lorelai goes home and tells Max she’s going to tell everyone in her phone book that she’s back with him. And actually does.
