Gilmore Girls 2.13 A-Tisket, A-Tasket

Discussion Questions:

  • Why does Rory want Dean to like Jess?
  • Was Rory right to go on the picnic with Jess when Dean asked her not to?
  • Should Lane just tell her mom about Henry?
  • Do you think Luke was working up to asking out Lorelai on the picnic?
  • Rory is mad that Dean talked with Lorelai - why?
  • Why is Lorelai making assumptions about Jess?
  • Is Rory’s anger because she likes Jess? Doesn’t want to think he likes her? Or because Jess is being unjustly judged as bad?
  • Was Lorelai right to be concerned? Did she back off for the wrong reasons (as contrast to her mother vs. her better judgment)?
  • Why does Rory call Jess, not Dean? Does her mother’s fear make her want to pursue Jess even more?
  • What do you think about the irony that Jess covets the bracelet that Dean made for Rory?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Stars Hollow is holding a "Bid on a Basket" fundraiser for the retirement home - on Sunday you can bid to win a picnic lunch. Lorelai is picking her basket - Rory expects Dean to win hers. Miss Patty drops a picture of Lorelai… that she shows the single guys she comes across.

Dean and Rory kiss in the market, but Jess turns out to be right behind them. Dean says he hates Jess - Rory wishes they could start over. Says it’s a waste of energy. After Dean goes back to work, Jess rounds the corner and taps Rory. Just to annoy her. Smiles as he leaves.

Miss Patty has sent Lorelai pictures & resumes for her top 3 contenders for Lorelai to date. Jackson came to ask Sookie if he should renew his lease on his house - hinting about living together. She doesn’t get it. He’s heartbroken.

Lane has a plan for how Henry and she can have their first date by having her cousin bid on her basket and swap places.

Time for the bidding. Lane’s basket is sold to the cousin, and Dean begins bidding on Rory’s. Jess doubles the bid. Then doubles his own bid. And he and Dean bid back and forth without even waiting for Taylor. Dean can’t beat Jess’ $90.

Rory goes to talk to Dean, who wants to kill Jess for messing with him. Jess comes to remind Dean and Rory that he also won the company of the basket’s maker for lunch. Dean says Rory is not going with him, but Rory says it’s tradition and asks Dean not to make it into a big thing. He nearly demands she not go, but gives up. Shoots back that Rory is hurting him.

Sookie’s basket is up, but Jackson won’t even bid on it. Kirk won it. Jackson tells Sookie about his feelings - he wanted to move forward in their relationship. Sookie admits she hadn’t thought about living together. He almost walks away but Sookie says she lied - she has thought about it. She doesn’t want to ruin what they have. They work it out but Sookie pouts that Kirk will eat her basket - Jackson goes to get it back.

Lorelai’s basket is being bid on by Miss Patty’s candidates. Lorelai is mortified and disgusted perhaps - she runs to Luke’s.

Lorelai tells Luke he needs to bid on her basket. Luke wins - his bid went over $50, the limit the bachelor’s were ’supposed’ to reach.

Kirk doesn’t want to give up his basket. He’s never had anyone make him a basket, not even his mom (who made it for all his siblings). But agrees for $250. Henry has not called to make the switch. The phone is dead. Lorelai and Luke eat in the gazebo. He goes to get them something from the diner.

Henry had called Lane’s house looking for her. It’s all too complicated - he doesn’t think he can date her with all the secrecy. He tells her he asked someone else to his prom. He figured she couldn’t go. Lane excuses herself, crying. Mrs. Kim asks her about the boy, says she doesn’t approve - Lane explodes that he was perfect and it’s all over now because she was too afraid to tell her mom about him.

Jess and Rory sit at the lake to eat. Rory wants to know why Jess did it. He says he was doing it as a joke, but Dean being all "tall and mad" just made him keep going. He opens the basket and said he wouldn’t eat those things - but hearing that Dean would eat it, he tries the food. Rory gets a laugh out of him falling for that - not good food.

Jackson now says living together is no big deal. Sookie looks sad and asks if he doesn’t want to live with her now? He says no, that they should get married! And soon. Sookie says yes!

Lorelai and Luke have their picnic. Luke wants to know who Lorelai expected to bid on her basket - she wanted the gutters guy to buy it so she could get her gutters cleaned. But says it’s a nice concept - having someone you love or have a crush on bid on your basket and then share a romantic lunch with. Luke says some day she’ll have a guy to bid on her basket like that. He sighs while looking at her. Tells her that "this is nice" (no longer just stupid).

Dean interrupts - worried about Rory. Says Jess is trouble and is always around. Lorelai sees that he’s jealous. He thinks Jess is using Rory to mess with him. Lorelai says Rory won’t mess things up with him - but doesn’t look convinced.

Jess and Rory are having a great talk about books. Rory asks why Jess is only nice to her. He said the screwing with Dean was part of getting there to be nice with Rory - it was a plan. He doesn’t want to answer that. They go for pizza - but Rory’s bracelet has fallen off. Jess pockets it.

Rory comes home late after pizza and the bookstore with Jess. Lorelai asks who she was with - looks concerned. Talks with her about Dean and Jess. Says she’s surprised Rory is hanging out with Jess. Rory says he has a really good side to him. Lorelai mentions the vandalism, cutting school, fighting… it slips that Lorelai and Dean talked about Jess. Lorelai says she’s worried Rory will get hurt. Says Jess will only get into trouble - she’s been there with those type of guys. Rory is outraged to be talking about it and storms out.

Rory and Lorelai are not talking that Friday at dinner. When Rory’s pager goes off, Lorelai asks if it’s Jess. It was Dean. Rory reminds Lorelai that she didn’t like Dean at the beginning. Lorelai says she didn’t know him, but she does know Jess. Lorelai says Jess has an eye on Rory - is weaseling into her world. Emily supports Lorelai and says Rory shouldn’t be with boys whom her mother thinks inappropriate.

Rory goes to her grandfather’s study and calls Lane, but Lane doesn’t want to talk. Lane is crying - Mrs. Kim says her rules are there so American boys don’t hurt Lane. Lane says he was Korean and all his other attributes. Mrs. Kim seems impressed - suggests calling Henry’s mother.

Emily and Lorelai talk - Emily says she must stand by her decision to keep Rory from Jess. But Emily talking about being Rory’s eyes and ears and locking her up makes Lorelai back off. She apologizes to Rory - says she trusts her judgment and doesn’t want to be all those things for Rory. She was spooked. She is concerned and asks Rory to be careful.

Lorelai goes home grossed out from Emily agreeing with her. Rory takes the phone to her room and calls Jess. He asks why she called - she gets nervous and he says he’s glad she called. He talks about the book she has him reading and says he’ll hold her to her promise to make it up to him if he doesn’t like the book. He’s holding her bracelet this whole time.

I swear Rory was wearing that tie-on bracelet in episodes prior to her meeting Dean.

One of my favorite Rory/Jess episodes. But I also felt SO bad for Lane in this one. Henry was a tiny bit jerk-ish, I thought…

Not one of my favorite episodes, but definitely good Rory/Jess scenes.

This episode always makes me furious with Lorelai. She is only judging Jess on the one time he was a jerk to her. And sure, he was a jerk. But that was also when he first got there. Rory never gave Lorelai anything to worry about so why is she getting so upset now? She should trust her daughter because Rory is a good kid.

Do you think maybe Lorelai sees a bit of Chris in Jess? Chris was quite the rebel in his younger days. And Lorelai did get pregnant.

Well, you know what’s funny in the end is that for all the bad influence Jess was on Rory (as everyone believed), she never did anything like stealing (a yacht?) or dropping out of school and was never even tempted to. And the thing is, Rory didn’t fall in love with Jess-the-bad-boy, she fell in love with Jess-the-funny-and-nice-guy. He never acted like the “bad boy” around her…

I really like Jane’s view on it. I think Logan was a much worse influence on Rory than Jess ever was. In this episode, Jess showed that he wasn’t just a jerk. He was a really intelligent, nice guy. It just takes people some time to get around to seeing it.

I like when Lorelai drags Luke outside to bid on her basket. Lane and Dean interupt Luke and Lorelai, and you can see a glint in his eye. Do you think they didn’t get together sooner, because they did not want to ruin their friendship? You can tell Rory was starting to fall for Jess, even though she was in the relationship with Dean. I really think, she loved, he read as much as she did. Just like her talking about books with her Grandfather. It is really attractive to her, that a guy knows literary stuff.
The only other guy who knew as much was Marty her friend at Yale. Lorelai may be reacting to her past, remembering the past, and how she felt with boys during her young years, being attracted to the so called bad boy….I like the statement Rory was born a grown up, and Rory said she was young for maybe a month. It is funny, how Rory acts more grown up then Lorelai.
