Gilmore Girls 3.04 One's Got Class and the other one Dyes

Discussion Questions:

  • Does Dave have a crush on Lane already?
  • Why does Mrs. Kim want Lane to have a religious education? What are her career expectations for Lane?
  • How would Mrs. Kim react to seeing Lane with purple hair?
  • Does Rory still have doubts about her love for Dean? Does she realize she’s past her "first love"?
  • Why didn’t the PTA step in to stop the questions about teen pregnancy?
  • Did both Luke and Jess take the easy way out of their problems? Jess, by dating Shane. Luke, by not speaking up. Are both simply avoiding making the first move?
  • Lorelai suggests Al’s Pancake World - is that avoidance or just coincidence?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Lorelai keeps imagining her own death, in funny ways. Like slipping on a banana peel and falling into a vat of whipped cream. Or being eaten by a turtle. Lane comes in all excited about her band practices. More of Jess and his girlfriend Shane making out. Rory sees more than she’d like to.

The band members are complaining about their practice space - the music shop - since they need to be super quiet. Because Lane’s mom has non-Christian music radar. They suggest renting a space in Hartford, which freaks out Lane. Dave takes her outside to talk - they need a new space. And they need her. Lane needs to figure out how to get to Hartford and how to buy her drums. Later, Rory suggests Lane tell her mom the truth. Not likely.

A Stars Hollow High mom calls for Lorelai. Though Lorelai has met and talked to her many many times, she can’t remember her. The PTA wants Lorelai to address a class about her success in business. Lorelai pretends to be listening to her talk about her daughter while telling Rory about the invitation. They want Luke as the other speaker - Lorelai offers to corner him into it.

Lane tries to talk herself into asking her mom about the band. Mrs. Kim beats her to it - brings her in to the kitchen to show her the applications for the religious gender segregated schools she has picked out for Lane. First question on an application: "If you meet Jesus walking on the street, what are the 3 questions you would like to ask?" Mrs. Kim starts to fill them out.

Michel teases Lorelai, in a bad way, for being the town example for business success. Luke calls Lorelai to back out - he was coerced by her threat of baby talk in the diner. He doesn’t want to go back to his high school. So she gives him her Louie Armstrong voice. Lorelai wins.

Lane is freaked about the schools. An Amish school in Nicaragua, for example. She’s worried the good schools will fill up, and the band will get a new drummer. Lane is tired of compromising for her mother. Lane is going to take a stand. To make a public statement. Like changing her hair color. To purple. Jess’ girlfriend Shane works at the beauty store. Rory gets a little flustered.

Luke wants to stay in his plaid "power outfit" but Lorelai drags him upstairs to change. Makes fun of his Jimmy Buffet shirt. Lorelai looks suspiciously at Jess. Tells Luke, when they are leaving, that Jess has a girl in the closet.

"Let the smell of bleach be the smell of freedom!" The hair changing process begins. Lane tries to distract herself from the stinging bleach. Lane runs around the block.

Lorelai preps for her speech - Luke will wing it. Lorelai makes fun of the "Butch Danes" hurdles award still on display.

Step one - blonde. Step two - purple. Rory says she senses chemistry between Lane and Dave. Lane is in love. Like what Dean and Rory have - that gets a pause and a "right" from Rory. Seems stern after that.

Lorelai starts on her speech about the details of her job, but is asked a question - first about Rory then about being a teen mom. The questions throw her - she wants to be honest, but is also flustered and does not want to encourage teen pregnancy. They see a contradiction between loving Rory and regretting being a teen mom.

Lane has purple hair. She’s thrilled and excited - until her mom gets home. The sound of it and the thought of blood bath. Lane begs Rory to get black hair dye.

Rory gets the dye - at which point Shane is on the phone with Jess. And Rory yells at her for not ‘assisting’ her as a customer. And basically calls her a blonde bimbo.

The moms confront Lorelai about telling their daughters it’s ok to get pregnant at 16. Accuse her of flaunting her mistakes. Lorelai doesn’t want to be judged by them. In her case, things worked out ok. That does not advocate teen pregnancy. Lorelai makes fun of all their hairstyles.

Luke asks if Jess had a girl stashed there before. Jess admits it. Luke says he should change the way he acts if he cares about a girl. Jess says he doesn’t care about Shane. Doesn’t even know her last name. Luke is angry at Jess for treating her like dirt. Jess feels justified since Shane treats him badly in return. Luke goes on about finding a girl he likes, which Jess reacts to.

"The girls that I like don’t give a damn about me. And unlike some other people I know, I’m not gonna sit around hoping that they change their minds and suddenly notice me."

Luke wants to know what that means - Jess cites examples of fixing porches, going on picnics and getting roped into speeches. Luke tells him to shut up. Jess says:

"At least I have a little self-esteem. I’m not playing golden retriever hoping someday she’ll turn around and fall in my arms. If she doesn’t want to be with me, then fine."

Luke says Jess has no idea what he’s talking about.

Shane and Jess walk by Rory and Lane - Shane calls Rory a freak. Lorelai comes and suggests they go to Al’s Pancake World. Rory begs for details on the speech. Lorelai loves her "little fluke."

I hate this episode for Lorelai’s sake!! That was totally unfair of the moms to get mad at her. What was she supposed to do? They just sat there and watched it all happen without telling the kids to be quiet.

Always made no sense to me….

I totally agree with Sara. I just watched and am still confused. I watched Lorelai struggle to get through the presentation/attack, and saw nothing wrong with what she did. The one mother sat through the whole thing and said not a word to the kids to stay off that topic. Then she tracks her down to yell at her…..it makes no sense at all. She clearly told them she doesn’t condone it, she got lucky but they shouldn’t take chances. It really was a weird episode.

i agree with you both. in real life a teacher/adult would speak up and stop it. Lorelai did the right thing!

but i disagree with you on “hating this episode” i love it! i’m gonna watch it again at 11am tomorrow.

    Sweater brigade.

LOVED our 1st glimpse of the band. Zack singing “London calling” was great. Did you see the look on Lane’s face while drumming? Angelic, child-like ….

Season 3 was the best. I loved “London Calling” being played at a whisper.

Arieanna, clearly writing these recaps every day is a labor of love for you. I just wish these recaps were separated from the actual news. Sure there is not as much news as there used to be, but still, it isn’t like the cast is in isolation.

I think the recaps are unbelievable and much appreciated. I am new to this board (for this run of GG) and just wondered if these recaps were written each week when the show was 1st aired? I still wish I would’ve discovered this show way back when …. must’ve been exciting times with all the fans chiming in …..

Thanks! Wonder Y, there actually has been slow news lately with the strike and all. I do try to report it all.

8 o clock - these recaps are written each day by me. I started this site a couple of years ago, so don’t have the earlier recaps. We are watching all of Gilmore Girls again, as it airs 5 days a week on ABC family.

    :)

    Arieanna,
Yes, I know the recaps are posted in conjunction with ABC Family airings. (Now if ABC Family will just broadcast in HD…) I just feel like the recaps and news serve different functions. I subscribe to the RSS feed so I know what is going on. I look at the recaps on a different schedule.

More importantly, I hope these recaps get archived for eternity for the next generation of Gilmore Girls watchers.
