Original Air Date: April 15, 2003 (Recap date: February 05, 2008)
Photos, Recap & Discussion

Discussion Questions:

  • Was Lorelai just being polite about Jess being employee of the month?
  • Does Lorelai realize Rory is unsure about her future, and thus supports her pro/con lists?
  • Do you think Jess is going to school?
  • Do you think Lane maybe likes her fake Korean boyfriend too?
  • Rory seems confident telling Paris there are alternatives to Harvard - had she made up her mind then about Yale?
  • Why does Lorelai share with Luke her dream about being married to him, just after he said she was a ’sore point’ with Nicole?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

The girls are making a pro/con list for Harvard vs. Princeton vs. Yale. Kirk’s new business is daily t-shirts with stuff from around town - like ‘babette ate oatmeal!’. Luke congratulates Rory on getting into those schools. Awkwardly hugs her head. Luke shares his Jess news with Lorelai - that Jess was made employee of the month at Walmart. There will be a ceremony and Luke is going (despite that Jess would hate it and doesn’t even know about it).

There is a stray cat at the Inn that Sookie has named Papaya. She feels more nurturing now. Shares a story about trying to make a spider a new leg and inadvertently killing it. Sookie takes paper to make fake ears, trying to teach Papaya how to drink.

The Poe Society is staying at the Inn - Lorelai quips her Poe knowledge to the guests, but apparently she’s more versed than they are.

Jess gets his award and makes Luke proud. The manager comes up to tell Luke how great Jess is, how he’ll put in more than 40 hours if someone is sick. Luke can’t figure out how Jess is pulling that many hours with school and the diner work.

Lorelai and Rory are depressed by the Poe reading - done badly. They chat instead. Wave at Dean and Lindsay, the latter glaring back at Rory. Why the grudge if Rory holds none? Lorelai begs a pen from Luke to write Drama on the Yale pro list. Miss Patty, like Luke, wants to know why Rory is wasting her time on the pro/con lists when it will be Harvard in the end. If Harvard is meant to be, the list will reflect it, Lorelai says.

The second Poe goes up, but apparently the Poes had their signals mixed up and both came to recite ‘The Raven.’ Nicole gives Lorelai the same look Lindsay gave to Rory. They are both being hated. The Poes argue with each other about Poe’s history. Kirk’s latest tshirt: "faux poes foes."

Dean and Lindsay come say hi, and Rory is forced to recite the magnet story. Dean congratulates Rory on Harvard and says he got into Southern Connecticut State. Ok, so Lindsay ‘was’ nice (when they were kids). Luke tells Lorelai about his experience at Walmart. Despite Lorelai’s suggestion, he thinks its impossible Jess is not going to school. That Jess knows the rules.

The middle of the night, Lorelai gets a call that the fire alarm is going off at the Inn. And it’s not a false alarm. Everyone is ok, the structure is ok, and the fire is almost out. Lorelai organizes to get everyone taken care of. Sookie has taken over Luke’s to make everyone breakfast.

Rory is entertaining the kids with sock puppets. Lorelai sends them in for breakfast and to pester Luke to do sock puppets with them. Miss Patty’s is emergency headquarters. They need to put people up around town for another night - all other Inn’s are full.

The teacher says ‘at least one of you’ has made it into Harvard. Paris has been out of school for 5 days. Rory takes school work to Paris, who is in bed watching tv. Paris is thinking of pretending to go to Harvard, to fool her parents, but has told her mother about having sex with Jamie. And has not called Jamie either.

Paris recorded her interview with Harvard and plays it for Rory. It’s of a very high-strung Paris talking about population control and yelling at the interviewer, who tries to interrupt her. Rory steps up and tells Paris to get out of bed and make a new life plan. There are alternatives to Harvard. Paris feels a bit better.

The pro-con lists have evolved - and Yale has double the pro’s as the other two. Rory points to her wall-o-Harvard and says she’s not done yet. Rory thinks she is supposed to be going to Harvard - it’s what everyone expects. Lorelai says not her - she wants Rory to do what’s right and that she does not hate Yale.

Lorelai asks about Jess - Rory says there is no way Jess has dropped school. Rory goes to sleep at Lane’s. More guests arrive to Lorelai’s, so she’s out a bed too. Lorelai the nomad is walking around town aimlessly. Rory suggests she go to Luke to ask if she can stay with him. She tosses a rock at his window and asks to stay.

Lane is talking to her ‘fake’ Korean boyfriend, who broke up with his ‘real’ girlfriend. They talk every night, and he is avoiding the subject of them breaking up their ‘fake’ relationship. Rory points out the truth - that he loves Lane.

Jess knocks on the window at Lane’s to talk to Rory. Rory brings up her mother’s suspicions. Jess tells her that he’s got it under control and is ‘going enough.’

Luke and Lorelai squabble over how to make a bed. She takes the bed, he takes the couch. Lorelai is proud of how she handled the day. Nicole calls, but Luke does not say Lorelai is there.

Luke admits that Lorelai is a ’sore point’ between him and Nicole. He made the mistake of bring up Lorelai a lot on their first date. He broke the first-date-talk-of-no-other-women rule. Lorelai tells Luke about her dream of him and the 18 alarm clocks and all the details of it. Including them being married. But not that he kissed her in the dream. Both Luke and Jess snore.

Luke and Sookie have enjoyed cooking together. The Inn is ready for Lorelai to come back - the Society give Lorelai their Raven in thanks. The fire chief warns them to ‘go slow’ inside the Inn, since nobody has told them quite what to expect when they see it. It’s a mess - the Inn is destroyed.

Rory goes to her room and sees that Lorelai has replaced all the Harvard stuff with Yale stuff. And there is a stack of Kirk-News shirts that say "Rory’s going to Yale!"

I loved this episode!! I loved the ending with lorelai telling luke about her dream! I think she told him cause it sort of came out as she was talking friend to friend with him and then she kinda realized in the middle that she might have feelings for him but is shy to admit that to him.

I beleive Jess innt going to school. He is at a point in his life where it is confusing. His mom and dad are not there for him and he gets shipped off to this samll town in which he doesnt want to be….the people are strange….untill he meets rory whom he likes. He blows off school and works to get money….i mean i dont think he is a really BAD boy but i feel his feelings and emotions about his situation are expected and well deserved. Looking back on the episodes and rewatching them….i realize in a way i do feel sorry for him. In the beginning i just hated him with rory…but now i am beginning to see that they did share a special relationship….i just wish that rory would have given him a second chance when he showed up later on…..maybe things would have changed…

This is one of my fav episodes in Season 3. I agree the best part in the entire episode is when Lorelai is sleeping over Luke’s and they talk. First they talk so openly and comfortably about relationships I think it’s very refreshing to see a man and a woman connect like that. When Luke was nervous with Nicole on their first date he switched to something he felt comfortable thinking/talking about… uh, unfortantely that was Lorelai. Not to hard to see where that is going. But what really stands out is when Lorelai tells him about “the dream”. Neither one seemed uncomfortable about it but as Lorelai goes along things start to sink in a little bit but instead of showing they were uncomfortable, they started to have a little spark of something pass between them.

    The Poe Night was hilarious.

I was just thinking about this episode the other day! When both Lorelai & Rory got dirty looks from the other women. But I really do love this episode. One of my all-time favorites. I can’t help but cry at the end of it every single time. It’s so bittersweet. You’re happy for Rory choosing Yale but the inn burning down is just devastating. A great episode. I want one of those t-shirts, too. But I highly doubt anyone would get the reference. (Everyone in the world isn’t quite as huge a fan as I am, unfortunately.)
