Discussion Questions:

  • Why does Paris get annoyed by Janet? Doesn’t she also get up early?
  • Do you think Marty has a crush on Rory?
  • Is Rory not ready for a new relationship?
  • Is Rory a relationship girl, not into casual dating?
  • Why is Rory not attracted to Marty?
  • Does knowing Natalie worked for Emily put Lorelai off?
  • Why does Lorelai start Luke’s movie education with Casablanca?
  • Why does Rory seem so disconcerted on her date?
  • Is Luke so upset about Nicole that he is not thinking romantically about Lorelai right now?
  • When Lorelai is putting the blanket on Luke… does she see something more in him?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Lorelai is gardening - Babette bought her bulbs to help "cultivate new life" and get over her "sense of loss" (i.e. Rory). But the bulbs are moldy and hairy. Lorelai has to look like she’s tending them though, since Babette is looking out for her. The girls don’t do well with dirt or bugs.

Paris hates their roommate, Janet, for getting up early and working out every day. Wakes her up. Paris turned off their alarm, so Rory has only 5 minutes to get to breakfast. She manages to get what’s left of the breakfast bar, but they’re out of coffee. Marty comes to say hi and offer some of his breakfast to Rory. Rory, still in her PJs, is not sure she wants to meet his ‘breakfast crew.’ Marty admits he was too embarrassed to talk to Rory - but when she showed up in her own PJs, he figured it evened the playing field.

Lorelai is setting up a meeting with a designer to help with the Inn, disobeying Luke’s cell phone rule. Michel is on his "crazy day" where he can eat whatever he wants - has Luke go check if his chocolate is Mexican. Emily calls to see if Lorelai will be at dinner - Lorelai tries to get Luke to kick her out. She succeeds after throwing a fry at him. Lorelai has her excuse to get off the phone.

Rory is discussing Hemingway - a classmate chimes up to defend her argument, then he stays behind to chat her up. Rory is clueless to the fact that he’s asking her out on a date. His name is Trevor. And he doesn’t score a date.

Rory’s clean clothes were dumped on the floor by another student, so she has to re-wash them. She came home to do so. Lane runs in to scarf down some pizza - Mrs. Kim has taken to ordering food, like okra, in bulk in the Internet. She’s starving.

Rory tells Lorelai about Janet & Paris’ war of wits. Lorelai wants to know if Naked Guy is hot. Rory says he’s sweet - which means bad butt, says Lorelai. Rory says she finds Trevor weird because he carries water. So much for the guys in her life. Rory thinks it won’t ‘go anywhere’ because Trevor is studying abroad the next year. Lorelai says Rory has never dated - just had relationships. Lorelai says Rory should date.

Lorelai has taken over 3 tables at Luke’s with Natalie (he loves that), the designer she hired for the Inn. Lorelai says they will have horses - the property already has stables. Lorleai is very excited about it all, until she hears that Natalie did a remodel for her mother.

Rory is eyeing up Trevor in her next class. Rory chats him up nervously after class. He doesn’t seem interested. Rory hints as much as she can about food, and when he finally does clue in and ask her to dinner, Rory says "um, ok" like she hadn’t hinted about it. Then calls him persistent.

Sookie says they are going to name the baby Davie. If it was a girl, Jackson suggested Colgate. But, since Sookie is the only one who knows the sex of the baby, she picked a fight with Jackson over that name to throw him off about the gender of the baby. Lorelai tells Sookie she’s not sure she can work with Natalie, that she needs to keep her life separate from her mother’s life, but Sookie is not happy. Natalie is the best. Lorelai agrees to give her a chance.

Luke is fed up taking messages for Lorelai. And yells at Ed, which surprises Lorelai. Lorelai says Luke has been barking at people for days. Luke had bought tickets to a Yankees game for him and Nicole before things fell apart, and he felt stupid and angry still having them when everything didn’t work out. He gave them to Ed, but was still surly about it. He broke his own 2-day plan limit rule - he had expectations and got hurt. He’s cynical. Lorelai invites Luke to the movie night she usually has with Rory. He hasn’t seen many movies - Lorelai has a lot of work ahead of her, to educate him.

Lorelai arrives to the Gilmore dinner before Rory. Pretends to need something from her car. She turns on the radio and dances in the car. Emily scares her by tapping on the car window. Tells her to come inside, where she proceeds to get angry at Lorelai for not telling her that Sookie is pregnant.

Rory arrives and says she has a date planned. Emily is not happy at how Rory got that date. And that she doesn’t know anything about the boy. Then accuses Lorelai of having ‘Sex and the City’ ensembles that she should not lend to Rory.

Natalie is getting the cold shoulder from Lorelai in Kim’s Antiques. Though Natalie has connections to get knock-offs of everything, even that doesn’t impress Lorelai. Lorelai tells Natalie their lives are perfect and they have no money issues. Lorelai tells Sookie she doesn’t want her mother to know they have money problems. Sookie reminds Lorelai that Natalie didn’t know she was pregnant until that day.

To be fair, Lorelai talks with Natalie about knowing Emily. Natalie assures Lorelai she doesn’t talk with Emily. And assures Lorelai how much she wants to do the Inn. Promises not to talk with Emily. That seals the deal.

Rory is prepping for her date. Paris has organized roommates meeting. But it’s just so Paris and Janet can ‘air their grievances’ in a public way. The smell and mess of sports vs. the smell and mess of crafts. Janet is sick of Paris’ negativity. Paris accuses her of being on steroids. Paris decides to settle it on a race - whomever wins the race wins (either no sports in early AM or no crafts).

Luke brings lots of Lorelai’s favorite foods to their movie night, but she already has Chinese. Lorelai goes over her rules for ‘classic movie’ watching. Lorelai calls Luke ‘uber monk’ for never having seen the FBI warning. They begin Casablanca.

Rory and Trevor start their date - Rory seems nervous, saying odd things kind of like how Tana does. Trevor’s small talk fails too.

Lorelai is wathcing Luke watch the movie, which creeps him out. He always knows something big is coming because she looks over. And gets annoyed because Lorelai is breaking her rules while he’s trying to watch the movie. Rory calls to say her date sucks - she doesn’t know how to date. She says Trevor is fine, but she keeps bringing the conversation to a crashing stop. Lorelai tells Rory to relax. Lorelai calls Rory back with Luke’s suggestion for Rory to say there is a draft, so that she can switch sides of the table and face her date more comfortably.

Luke hates dating, and prefers his hermit ways. And he says dating is useless - his gut tells him if he can stand someone right away. It makes him relaxed when he meets someone knowing they will "let you be." The phone rings and Luke picks up - it’s Emily. Who can hear that Lorelai doesn’t want to talk to her.  Emily is angry because Natalie would not work with her - because of Lorelai. Bue Emily won’t be the cause of Natalie losing Lorelai as a client, so they are at a face-off. Lorelai says she’ll fire Natalie.

Rory comes back to Stars Hollow after her date. Luke is asleep on the couch. They tuck him in, and Rory comments on how comfy Luke looks there. "Yes, he does," Lorelai says. Oh, what a look!

Rory says Trevor eventually felt the same "draft" and switched sides with her. The date was very forced. Lorelai says Rory was lucky before with boys. Though Luke thinks you know by gut who the contenders are, Lorelai thinks you have to go through a lot to find the right ones.

Rory is in the laundry room and meets a nice guy who has saved her clothes from getting dirty after someone else dumped them. He has good music taste. Both love their moms. Rory asks him for coffee, but he says no. Rory’s first rejection.

I liked Luke and Lorelai watching movies together. They just worked so well at this point completely opposite of them in the last two seasons. This is one of those episodes that almost makes me wish they didn’t get together just so they wouldn’t ruin that great chemistry in episodes like this.

I’m confused by the last comment. Rory doesn’t have a step sister, she has a half sister. But they never lived together, so I guess you’ll just have to forgive her slip of mind. The girl hasn’t dated, and therefore is somewhat nervous.
Obviously Marty does have a crush on Rory. He has told all of the “breakfast” crew about her, offers her HIS eggs, and is all gushy when talking to her. Yeah, definately some crushing going on.

Rory is definetily a relationship girl! if shes was a casual dater than she would have been good at it and would have had a lot more dates as a teen.

now the marty situation. i don’t think rory is looking at him as a boyfriend because they became friends first. and she still has the word “friend” in mind when shes with him.

i love luke and lorelai’s movie night! it brings me in fast-foward mode! they were acting like a couple from start. where i live the guest doesnt normally answer the phone unless they are asked to. Luke is def. thinking of him and lorelai, even though the nichole thing. face it… hes has been the whole time!

I love this episode. It´s one of my favourte episodes of season 4. I like the whole Luke and Lorelai scenes a lot! The best is the movie scene and when Rory comes home and says to Lorelai “Luke looks comfortable” and Lorelais face to that… priceless! :) Seeing this episode I laughed a lot! Perfect episode.

I always consider this episode to be Lorelai and Luke’s first unofficial date because it had a date feel to it but it was so much more like two best friends hanging out watching movies. I love that there’s no uncomfortable feelings passing through them. They can just relax, have fun and be themselves. It’s kind of like while Rory is having a date (the bad side of one) Lorelai is having a date but the best kind. I also like the part when Lorelai and Rory mention how comfortable Luke was there (and I think a “how cute” comment was running through their heads). I like how Rory spread the news about the urine mints to people. That’s so funny and Lorelai: “Oh my God, I’ve been eating those mints for years… hey Luke did you hear about urine mints..?” hysterical. What a great episode.

Oh yeah, I also like the scene when Lorelai asks Luke over for movie night because she could tell something was wrong with Luke by the harsh way he was acting. It might have seemed like a normal Luke thing to most people but not to Lorelai and Luke didn’t even have to tell her something was wrong. I love that strong bond they have with each other where some times they don’t need communication because they know each other so well they can sense things about one another.
