Gilmore Girls 4.06 An Affair to Remember

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you think Richard & Emily were top dogs in their neighborhood before the new people showed up?
  • Is Rory over her head at school?
  • Why does Lorelai lie to Emily about the flyer? Why not say the business is temporary?
  • Is this Kirk’s first date?
  • Is Emily purposefully making the dinner hard on Lorelai?
  • Why didn’t Richard tell Jason about the party? And vice versa about Jason’s plans for a trip?
  • Why didn’t Emily compliment Lorelai on her decor before, if she liked it?
  • Does Richard know he’s hurting Emily by canceling the party?
  • Does Lorelai confront Digger on her own behalf or on Emily’s?
  • Is Lorelai impressed that Digger stood up to her mother?
  • Do you think Lorelai and Digger ever dated before?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Emily and Richard are being upstaged by their neighbors in the size of the chocolate bars given away at Halloween, and they don’t like it. They consider going to the Homeowners Association or starting a petition. Rory is very busy at school with her five hard courses.

Jason (Digger) Stiles is over to get new portraits with Richard for their company. They sign their official partnership documents. Emily is planning their launch party - considers a Russian Vodka Bar theme.

Due to an error in the syllabus, Rory finds out she’s a week behind in her reading.

Lorelai finds out that the stable house needs a new roof. Sookie comes by to say Emily hired them to cater Richard’s party. Lorelai realizes she never told her mother about their catering business. It’s probably the last job Sookie can do before the baby, so Lorelai gets sucked into it. The "pretty pretty" wad of money wins.

Kirk has a new line of whimsical mail boxes. Kirk asks Lorelai about her catering services. His brother’s ex-girlfriend lulu is coming into town. Lorelai points out his "appointment" to take her to dinner is a date. He has a crush on lulu. Lorelai suggests taking lulu out of the house, away from his mother.

Rory comes back to find Janet jumping on a squeaky trampoline and Paris ignoring the phone in a fight with Jamie. Rory begs Paris to answer the phone, then realizes listening to her argue is no better. Rory kicks Paris out to talk on her cell instead. Tries to sit down and study. Then Tana turns on the tv, and Rory is too nice to ‘tell’ her to turn it off. She gives up and leaves.

The party is fast approaching, and Lorelai has to call Emily for the details. Ah, the "we" of the Independence Catering Company. What sarcasm from Emily’s voice. Lorelai pretends that she sent Emily a flyer about the new business and pretends to be hurt Emily did not call her congratulations. Emily asks Lorelai to bring her a spare, even though she knows (and later says as much) that Lorelai is lying.

Rory comes home to study, but there are broccoli tarts all over her room. Rory hasn’t found anywhere at Yale with the right ‘vibe’ to study. The libraries are too big, quiet and drafty.

Kirk goes to the diner to choose a table to reserve for Wednesday for his date. He feels comfortable at Luke’s. He felt the need to add the "with a young lady" part. Gives Luke a diagram on how to set up his table. Asks Luke "how much for the place upstairs" if the date goes well. Luke kicks him out.

Lorelai and Sookie have a test meal prepared for Emily - Lorelai asked to be treated like any other caterer. It’s Sookie’s first time there. The maid sends them around to the servants entrance.

Rory is about to go back to her room, but the tv is on, there is jumping, the phone is ringing and Paris is yelling. Walking across campus, Rory finds a tree. Sits down. It’s perfect.

The test meal is taking forever. Sookie’s food wows Emily (well, as much as Emily can be wowed), but the presentation (i.e. Lorelai) needs fine tuning. Lorelai knows the "whale’s" M.O. is to humiliate and rip apart all the other fish - that Emily was just toying with them with the whole prep meal.

Rory raves to Lorelai about her perfect study tree. At the diner, Kirk is taping himself eating and making small talk to study for his date. Lorelai’s says it’s all anyone wants - to find someone nice to hang out with. Kirk’s date doesn’t look promising.

Emily compliments Lorelai’s choice of florist to Richard, something she’d never do to Lorelai directly. Jason comes by to get a set of keys for the office. Emily asks Jason for his guest list for the party - he is drawing a blank. Richard forgot to tell him. Jason says he’s not sure a launch party is "the way to go." Jason says he planned a trip to take everyone to Atlantic City instead. He makes an argument for it being different and memorable - something that will get the word around about their company. Richard asks if it’s too late to cancel their party. Now Emily gets to ‘hang out and relax’ - her two favorite things.

Someone is sitting under Rory’s study tree. Rory asks if he’ll move, but he says no.

Kirk and lulu start their date.

Emily comes by to tell Lorelai that she won’t be catering the event, but will be reimbursed for expenses. Lorelai gets angry at all the jumping through hoops she did for Emily. Emily does agree it is wrong. And says she’s sorry - and means it. Emily even compliments Lorelai on the decor. Emily says she thinks this might have been her best party yet, but now her parties - and even Emily herself - are stuffy and out of date.

Kirk’s date with lulu is going well - she’s laughing and touching his hand. Kirk comes over to Luke confused - he doesn’t understand why lulu is having a good time. And he’s annoyed they haven’t talked about any of his prepared topics - he hasn’t needed them. Kirk is even angry lulu has not bailed on their date. Tries to pick a fight with Luke about it. Luke tells Kirk to go back and enjoy his date. Though he doesn’t know why, Luke tells Kirk that she likes him.

Sookie is sad about losing her catering gig, not getting the new car they need for the baby. Rory comes in angry about her study tree. Both are being very dramatic. Lorelai tells them to suck it up. Then goes out to do something.

Lorelai pays a visit to Digger Stiles. Confronts him about not returning her calls. Says he had no right to cancel the party - people were depending on the money and he made Emily feel obsolete and useless. That he didn’t know doesn’t matter - they are self-centered, it’s their way. But he should have cancelled his plans. Lorelai reminds Digger that putting on these parties is Emily’s job. Lorelai brings up being at camp together and him standing up in a canoe as an example of how he ‘never thinks’. She was dunked. He remembers - green t-shirt, no bra.

Lorelai tells Digger to apologize to Emily and to let her have her party. They exchange nicknames - Digger and Umlauts [referring to the wet t-shirt incident with her two little ‘dots’]. Instead of conceding to the party, he asks Lorelai out on a date. But Digger knows how to twist Lorelai - he reminds her that Emily would hate it if she went out with him. That works - smiling, Lorelai tells Digger he sucks.

The same guy is still at Rory’s study tree. Rory apologizes for getting upset before. But, he is not guilted into leaving. So Rory bribes him instead with $20. Rory gets back her study tree.

Kirk saved this episode. The Digger plot arc was lame.

Seriously the only good parts in this episode was Kirk’s setup for the date, the actual date and Lorelai confronting Jason about doing things without thinking how it might hurt people and that definately foreshadows things ahead to come. Business is his #1 priority and unfortunately what’s right for business is not always the right thing to do. I dislike Jason because I feel like he’s supposed to be a Luke fill-in.

I don´t like Jason either… He´s boring and ugly, don´t have any idea why Lorelai is dating him in season 4… But the Kirk part was really funny! And I also liked that Emily showed some emotion towards Lorelai and that Lorelai went to Digger, because to me it seems like she felt really sorry for her mother and that´s just sweet, because deep down she likes her!

I love Jason/Digger, he’s actually my fav of her boyfriends asside from Luke. I thought they fit well together, I like the banter and how he excepts her neurotic little things and has a whole load of his own, but that they still make space for each other in their lives.
I agree with what Jillian says about this episode foreshadowing what’s to come with regards to Diggers character and how he puts business first, I think that is also the fundamental difference between Lorelai and him, she thinks much more on an emotional level, and he’s all business.
I think this epi really shows how unbelievably dysfunctional Lorelai’s relationship is with her mother - the way she lies about the catering business when telling the truth (it’s not important, it’s just a temporary thing, didn’t think it was worth mentioning, bla bla bla) would have been fairly acceptable, Emily might have made a comment or two, but that would have been the end of it, and she would have had the added bonus of not ahveing that incredibly awkward conversation with Emily. And the fact that she would contemplate going out with a guy purely because her mother would hate it is seriously dysfunctional! I understand it in a way, overbearing mothers can be a bitch and do make you want to lie, but it’s funny to see that kind of relationship laid out like that.
