The Festival of Living Pictures

by Arieanna on February 21st, 2008

The "Festival of Living Pictures" in Gimore Girls 4.07 "The Festival of Living Art" is so intruiging that I thought I’d seek out the original paintings that inspired this episode. There is a real living art festival held eat year in California called The Pageant of the Masters - the 90 minute living art performance attracts hundreds of thousands of people a year.

This is Rory as Antea in the painting called "Antea" by Parmigianino, painted between 1531 and 1534. Gilmore Girls names the painting as "Portrait of a Young Girl Named Antea," probably more for descriptive purposes.

This is "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci as it is still shown in Milan, Italy. It was painted between 1495 and 1498:

Lorelai is the woman in the red hat in Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s "Dance at Bougival" which was painted from 1882-1883:

This statue is known as "Moissonneur", or "The Reaper", designed by Nicolas Poussin near 1679. It stands in The Versailles Park and Gardens in France:

What do you think? With the exception of the sculpture, which apepars to be a mirror reflection of the original, the renditions are very good in my opinion.

That is some of the best makeup that I have seen on a show or movie. They are exact copies of the originals. Fantastic episodes!

This is the ONLY episode that GG has been rewarded with an Emmy or Emmy nomination. It was for Best Make-up - and how deserving. I thought I read somewhere that the show actually won the award, but they were never given credit other than by word of mouth.

I thought the costume’s and makeup in all the pictures were outstanding, but the ones in the Last Supper were absolutely mind boggling. When they took the shot of the entire group from a distance, I couldn’t tell if they were real people standing there or fake. It was sooooooo awesome, and the actors were great at standing still.

    Awesome episode..one of my favorites!

BTW…I loved Sebastian when he was playing his solo in the garage, when trying out for the band. And since I’m older than Sebastian, I wanted to throttle Brian when he said “He was alive when man first walked on the moon!” LOL LOL I felt truly VERY VERY old when that was said. LOL

One of my favorite episodes….and thank you, Arieanna, for the information regarding “Pageant of the Masters”. Makes me want to see that someday in Laguna Beach, CA.

I had always been wondering what the real art pieces looked like compared with the renditions on the Gilmore Girls episode. The only piece I was actually familiar with was the Renoir. The similarities are amazing! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

The make-up in this episode is amazing and the attention to detail on the costumes and the background of the paintings too, it’s just outstanding! I knew the Last Supper and Dance at Bougival and had never seen Anthea. It was great to be able to see the original side-by-side with the Gilmore Girls version on all of them.

That is awesome to be able to see the paintings/sculpture side by side with the GG version of the living art. They did a spectacular job recreating the image! I love this episode and what they did with it. Thank you for showing us the original paintings. That was neat! They definitely deserved that Emmy! I knew of the paintings and the sculpture except for “Anthea” but what a great replication they did!

    Was my pleasure :)

I wish we could have seen the gold girl in her final portrait, as I would have liked to find that one too. Anyone remember who she was? I forgot to take notes on that.

These are pretty much the same! but Antea’s face is more narrow whereas Rory’s is more round! slight technicality…but truly amazing!

Thanks so much for posting this! I’ve seen this episode countless times and finally remembered to google it to find out what the paintings were and your post was the first thing I found. :D
