Gilmore Girls 4.11 In the Clamor and the Clangor

Discussion Questions:

  • Is Rory’s grief inconsistent, having not cried at Fran’s funeral?
  • Is Zack still hung up on Gil’s age?
  • Why didn’t Luke tell Lorelai about moving?
  • Lorelai gets mad at Luke for not mentioning moving away, but do you think she told him about Jason?
  • Is Luke right? Is Lorelai being too nosy?
  • Lorelai usually holds her grudges with Luke longer. Why does she decide to go back to Luke’s so early?
  • Is Lorelai judgmental?
  • Why didn’t Luke move his stuff to Nicole’s?
  • Do you think Lorelai would have confessed feeling for Luke?
  • Is Mrs. Kim more upset that Lane went out or that Lane didn’t tell her but told Luke?
  • Why does Mrs. Kim tell Lane to move out?
  • In the end, Lorelai is eating at the bakery. Is she avoiding Luke? Why - out of the fight, or because she is not ready to complete the thought she started that night?
  • Why does Lane go to Rory, not Lorelai (who as a spare room)?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

There is a funeral for Stan - a guy who wore a fedora and Hush Puppies each day, but no pants. He was a regular at the Inn, and had the first reservation already booked for the Dragonfly - even though all he could eat was salad. Lorelai has noticed that five people a year die in Stars Hollow - Stan is #4 for this year. They speculate about who is next. Sookie & Lorelai prepare a eulogy for Frank, the old guy they vote to die. It is announced that Stan donated money for the church bells to be repaired and restored. Hank stumbles and the girls are worried about karma. They say the fifth could be anyone, even Kirk - as Kirk falls…

Lane’s band is rehearsing. Gil is hyped, but Zack is not. He says they are playing too perfectly. He wants them to sound real. They give Zack a hard time for knowing things about ‘N Sync. Gil makes a call, and the others get mad at Zack for being critical of Gil (because it’s really about Gil, his comments). They all like Gil, and he brings food. Zack says "never an Italian sub with pickles." Gil comes back with awesome news - they are booked for a gig at CBGB’s. Many a great band has started out there.

Lorelai and Rory enjoy the fourth snow of the season - which is the first to them, both being busy on the first three. The Church bells start to chime, and the town stops to listen, then to clap.

Lane is working with a group of students from her school. She tries to get them to think of leaders ‘outside’ the clergy to interview for their project. She does not succeed. Rory brings a ‘book’ back to Lane. But it’s a book that’s been converted to have a hidden CD cut-out. Lane shares how excited she is about her upcoming gig, but is having a hard time coming up with an excuse to be out at 1 am.

Paris has dragged Rory to the International Relations Club. Rory is already studying a lot, so it’s just more on her plate. Paris may be pre-med, but a "certain fellow" told her to join. Her certain fellow has told her a lot of things about faculty gossip. The guy from the laundry room that didn’t want to go for coffee with Rory walks in.

Kirk is nagging Luke for the time, to know when the bells will chime. Kirk has tinnitus (like Captain Kirk) so he doesn’t know which are the real bells. Luke is looking at paint chips of purples and greens - he and Nicole are getting an apartment together. He moved three weeks ago - Lorelai didn’t know. The apartment is in Litchfield - another county. Lorelai starts yelling about them not being friends - friends share things. Luke seems pained by that.

Rory is sitting with friends when they start to drool over the guy Rory asked out - his name is William. The friend says this William is telling everyone about how he met ‘this girl’ (Rory) and that she asked him out after like 3 seconds and is now following him around - his ‘adoring fan.’ Apparently he even has an impression of how Rory asked him out.

Lorelai is very upset about the Luke thing, and lets Sookie know it. She’s disappointed that she and Luke are not the friends she thought they were. Poor Davie hates the bells, and starts crying on the hour knowing they are about to start. Since she’s up, Lorelai happens to notice that Luke is shoveling the snow from her walkway.

Instead of being apologetic, Luke is angry. Yells at Lorelai for thinking everything is her business and making him feel guilty when he shouldn’t. He says he "owes" Lorelai nothing. They end in an even bigger fight than they started with.

Rory is in her club, fidgeting, when her pencil rolls over to William accidentally. Rory takes the opportunity to argue against him in a debate that comes up. Rory brings up William knowing something about a "unique view on a situation" and that spreading lies can cause more damage than guns or bombs.

Rory says Lorelai is acting like a 4-year old. She’s hungry and doesn’t want to go anywhere, particularly not Luke’s. But Rory doesn’t have the time to listen to Lorelai figure out what to eat.

The bells are driving people in Stars Hollow crazy. Lorelai, out walking in the snow, decides to go into Luke’s. "Wanna help me break the bells?" is all Lorelai says. She grabs a doughnut, he grabs tools. Lorelai goes upstairs and wonders if Luke really did move - all his stuff is still there. She keeps her mouth shut though.

Lane and the band are waiting for their time to go on-stage. But the manager comes in to say they are bumped. With such a late time slot, and on this particular night, the club is too empty for a show. Lane tries to argue with the manager to let them play. Zack wants to blame Gil, but that’s unfair.

Lorelai praises God when she is able to unlock the door with her gym card. Luke seems to know a ridiculous amount about how bells work. Lorelai says Luke must have been the top of his class at ‘hunchback school.’ Luke turns out to be the one who broke the bells all those years ago in the first place!

Lorelai asks about all of Luke’s stuff not moving. She accuses him of pretending to move. And it comes out - Luke has reasons not to sleep at his new apartment pretty much all the time. ‘Valid’ reasons. Luke calls Lorelai out for ‘doing it again’ - passing judgment on his relationship. He doesn’t remember anyone pronouncing them "husband and wife and Lorelai." Lorelai insists that it is her business, since she had to ‘adjust’ to him moving. So, why does it matter?

"Because I care"

"Why?

"Because I don’t want you to move?"

"Why? Why don’t you want me to move?"

Lorelai closes her eyes and is about to speak, but the Reverend comes in. He spots the crowbar, says "Oh, thank God!" and tells them to carry on.

It’s 4am. Lane shows up at Rory’s dorm. Lane says she couldn’t come up with an alibi. Instead, she snuck out. Rory wants Lane to call her mom to make sure she’s not worried. She won’t, so Rory calls Lorelai, who answers with an "I hate you." Lorelai insists on calling Mrs. Kim, knowing as a mom what her reaction would be if Rory were missing.

Mrs. Kim has the fire department and police over and a prayer vigil going on. Mrs. Kim asks for the address of Rory’s dorm. Mrs. Kim stops to tell Luke Lane won’t be at work that day, but he already knew that. Luke says Lane had called him that night and that morning already. Mrs. Kim seems close to tears, hearing that Lane called Luke and Lorelai. Mrs. Kim decides to go home.

Lane is surprised that Mrs. Kim did not come to kick down the door and take her home during the night. She still is avoiding calling home. Lane is very unhappy with her life. Rory tries to offer support, saying Lane won’t always be in school, but Lane feels weak and spineless. Lane decides to go home and deal with it all.

Rory sees William in the dining hall and tries to ignore her, but with a sly smile he calls her Madeline Albright. Fed up, Rory confronts him about his story. That coffee was not a huge thing, that she was not stalking him, and that using it in a story is not right. But William says he wasn’t talking about Rory. He was talking about someone who was stalking him. Rory, abashed, asks that he not talk about this new story as well.

Mrs. Kim, looking sadly around Lane’s room, notices the loose floorboard, and finds Lane’s music stash. Lane goes up to her room later, and finds out that Mrs. Kim has found all her secret places. All but one, which Lane volunteers. Lane apologizes. Says she doesn’t want to keep secrets from Mrs. Kim, though looking around Mrs. Kim finds that hard to believe. Lane tells her about the gig, and Mrs. Kim confirms she would have said no. Mrs. Kim wants to know how long ‘this’ has been going on. Lane, with some pride, says she started it when she was 6 after Mrs. Kim said the Cookie Monster was one of the 7 Deadly Sins.

Mrs. Kim seems to state and ask if Lane made her do this. Lane says no - she wants to please her so much, but she can’t. Lane tells Mrs. Kim she doesn’t want to go to the 7th Day Adventist college - she wants to be a drummer. She is happy to go to community college, to adhere to Mrs. Kim’s rules - so that Lane can get what she wants, with the band, and no longer lie to Mrs. Kim.

"Children do not make the rules. You may… move out and live like that somewhere else."

Rory tells Lorelai about confronting William. Ah, the ego they share. Rory notices the lack of bells over the phone. Lorelai doesn’t tell Rory about her sabotage. Rory notices that Lorelai sounds distracted. Lorelai says she didn’t get much sleep.

Rory answers the door - there is Lane, with a suitcase.

Nice episode. Of course Lorelai was mad at Luke for not telling her that he moved together with Nicole because she´s jealous but she did have a point there. They are really close friends and it was really not fair not to tell her that he moved 3 weeks ago. But that may just be, because he didn´t want to hurt her as he´s in love with Lorelai too. And damn Reverand… if it wasn´t for him, Lorelai would have told Luke that she at least likes him a lot…
I felt sad for Mrs. Kim. I mean she has a right to be upset, because Lane did call everyone except her mom, ok she felt guilty and was afraid to call her but it must have been a very das moment for Mrs. Kim to find out that Lane had called everyone except her… On the other hand she should have agreed with Lane´s suggestion and shouldn´t have kicked her out but I can also understand that Mrs. Kim felt really hurt and that´s why she didn´t agree.
