Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:
Lorelai thinks she’s talking to (then sitting on) a sleeping Rory on the couch, but it’s actually Lane. The house is freezing - Lorelai broke a window and Luke hasn’t called back yet about coming to fix it. Rory wonders if Jess froze. Lorelai quips that maybe Sylvia Plath was just cold - as the girls use the oven to stay warm.
There is a traffic jam in Stars Hollow because Jess is having his car pushed to the shop. Meanwhile, Kirk is trying to organize the star decorations for the Firelight festival in the town square. He wants to say ‘Roger’ on his walkie talkie, even if it’s meaningless. Luke tries to offer Jess money to get the car towed so he doesn’t block traffic or make a spectacle of himself, but Jess refuses.
Jess’ car needs a bunch of repairs. Gypsy says she’ll have it done for him that night, since Jess is pressing to get out of town fast. She’ll overcharge him too. Jess sees a girl whose hair looks like Rory’s and stops - Gypsy says "that’s not her." Jess pretends that he doesn’t know what Gypsy is talking about.
Lorelai and Lane have covered the broken window with plastic wrap and bandaids. Lorelai says she doesn’t want to hurt Luke’s feelings by calling a repair guy. Lorelai wonders if Lane wants her to see Mrs. Kim while she’s out - Lane says it’s ok. Lorelai thinks Mrs. Kim wants to say something, but hasn’t.
Emily calls in a panic because she can’t fill her table for the charity that night, and that’s a social no-no. Emily tells Lorelai she has to bring a guest. Emily is need of a Gimlet.
Liz wants to sell some of her earrings at the diner. Luke thinks nobody will buy them and that it will crush her. Luke thinks everyone in Stars Hollow has a life and won’t want Liz’s stuff. As Miss Patty buys a pair! Luke thinks they are pretending to like them out of support.
Rory goes into Weston’s for coffee, and there is Jess. Jess gets up and leaves right away.
Lorelai runs up to Luke’s truck screaming about frozen carcases but instead it’s Liz in the truck. Lorelai asks Liz to pass on a message about the window - Liz thinks Lorelai is the wife. Lorelai says she’s the friend and customer, not the wife. Lorelai tries to tell Liz that Luke has said good things about her, but Liz knows that she’s a screw up. But Luke is great, and always is there for her. Even trying with Jess (asks if Lorelai knew Jess), though maybe too late. Liz calls Luke her hero. Lorelai agrees - Luke is one of the good ones, maybe even ‘the’ good one. Liz says she’s considering moving back to Stars Hollow with her boyfriend.
Rory and Lorelai go to hang out with Babette, who has heat. Babette is looking forward to the Firelight Festival and tells about how Kirk got stranded up a tree putting out the stars. Babette opens her mouth about the Jess buzz. Rory says she’s fine and has already seen Jess. Rory said it was weird - sounds angry that Jess is the one acting all awkward and getting up and leaving like he’s mad - when he’s the one who left her. Rory says it should be her right to walk out in a huff. Rory keeps reminding herself that Jess will be gone soon.
Liz is grabbing food from the diner to make dinner for ‘her guys’ - Luke and her boyfriend, TJ, who is upstairs already. Luke goes up to find TJ making chili. Luke guesses TJ’s name in the first go - Thomas Jefferson. Liz seems excited to have them there. Just then, Jess walks in to get something. She grabs Jess and goes on about ‘all the men’ in her life being ‘drawn there’ to her. Liz insists that Jess stay.
Luke and Jess are both critical of TJ, who does seem a little spacey. Jess gets up to leave. Luke follows to talk gossip about TJ. Luke wants to come up with a plan to get TJ out of Liz’s life. A grown man with an etch-o-sketch. Jess says Liz will do what she wants, and does not care what they think. Luke says they have to fix it no matter what, so Liz doesn’t throw her life away again.
Jess says that’s Luke’s problem - he has to fix everything and everyone, whether they want help or not. Jess says it doesn’t make Luke a good guy - it makes him a pain in the ass. Jess says that Luke makes it so that when they fail, Luke gets to feel like a martyr and they get to feel like they screwed up and also disappointed Luke. Jess says Luke’s interference makes things worse. Jess suggests Luke focus on his own life. Luke looks dumbfounded and sad.
Rory goes to the bookstore - Jess is there. Immediately gets up and runs out.
Luke is already inside Lorelai’s house - he snuck in through her second floor bedroom window. He’s cut his hand. Luke is drunk. Luke admits to a few beers. He came there, fell out of Lorelai’s tree once, then made it in. But if he had hurt himself, he would have fixed it, because ‘that’s what he does’. Lorelai bandages his hand, then Luke goes back to the window. He’s the ‘reliable guy’ who helps people out ‘whether they like it or not.’
Luke didn’t know it was his ‘big problem’, but it is. "Gotta handful of Barbie," as he notices the bandage.
"Today I found out what a big, dumb, idiot guy I am. Just a posing, judgmental, know-it-all who blows around yelling and screaming and complaining and screwing up everybody else’s life."
Luke calls Jess smart for not caring about anyone else’s life. Luke just laughs about him being an unwelcome burden to all. Lorelai comes over and tells Luke how much Liz thinks of him and how she wants to move to be closer to him. Lorelai says Jess is unhappy and doesn’t mean the things he says. Lorelai sits Luke down to rest and runs out for some non-Barbie bandages.
Lorelai spots Jess and confronts him.
"You’ve been here less than 24 hours, and already I wanna kill you."
Jess pretends not to know what Lorelai is talking about in regards to what he said to Luke. Lorelai calls him mean-spirited. Jess thinks it’s about Rory, not about Luke. Though Lorelai does want to know if Jess is back because he’s hung up on Rory. Lorelai says Rory is over Jess.
Lorelai brings Rory to the charity dinner, which upsets Emily. Emily wanted Lorelai to bring a man - their table is short on men. Richard & Jason’s secretaries are there too. Desperate. Jason comes in and Emily tells Rory to move over and for Lorelai and Jason to pretend to be together. The last seat has a coat on it, as if it belonged to someone. They couldn’t find a last guest. Emily instructs Jason and Lorelai to act like they like each other.
TJ tries to get Luke to come out to the Festival. After failing to entice Luke because it’s a good festival, TJ tells Luke to come out and say goodbye to Liz, as they are leaving right after. Makes sure Luke knows he’s serious and they want to see him come out.
The speaker at the charity is boring - using knowledge so far into obscurity all have to fake laugh. Jason is willing to test how far they can push the ‘fake’ relationship in front of Emily. Lorelai even pretends to hate doing it so that Emily has to enforce their relationship more strongly.
Someone comes to say hi to Jason - brief chit chat about business and golf in a very business-like manner. He is Jason’s father! Lorelai assumes it’s because of the business thing, but that’s how it’s always been. Cold. Richard and Emily hear that Floyd was just there and want to know what he said to Jason. They think he must have a motive for being at the charity - perhaps digging for info on their business. Richard thinks it’s significant that Floyd asked nothing about the business - he expects something big now. They leave - Emily says nobody believed Jason and Lorelai were a couple anyway.
The other women from the reunion, including the one Luke doesn’t remember making out with, are fawning over Luke. TJ affectionately drapes Liz’s scarf over her, then brags about how great her jewelry is. Liz is humble about her craft, but TJ gives her due credit. TJ has also just built Liz a new booth. Luke overhears.
Liz apologizes to Luke about Jess - she lied and said she wasn’t talking with Jess. Jess has been calling her for a few months and didn’t want Luke to know. Liz has been trying to bond with Jess. She didn’t know he’d return for his car. But she thinks Jess will be ok. Liz thanks Luke for trying with Jess, saying something’s things take a while to sink in. Like with her. She apologizes for being boring - she only had one cup of punch before "Gary" switched them over. That’s TJ’s real name. Luke says it looks like things are good with Liz and TJ - she says they are.
Liz gives Luke some earrings for his wife or for Lorelai. They hug - a sincere, happy hug. Lorelai and Rory arrive very hungry - split to grab food from the carts. Luke tells TJ that Liz is getting ready to go. Luke tells TJ that overhearing they want to move, that it’s "ok by him" if they do. TJ points out that they didn’t need his permission. Luke says he had assumed TJ was like all the other guys, but seems like a good guy. TJ says thanks and calls Luke a dick.
Lorelai hears the tail end of that conversation and Luke promises to tell her the story later. He notices Lorelai is all dressed up. Lorelai teases that it’s "just for you." Lorelai asks if Jess is gone yet - Luke thinks he might be. Luke gives the earrings to Lorelai. Luke says that Liz wanted her to have them.
Jess’ car is fixed. He gets in and notices an envelope in the visor - full of money. Jess gets out. Sees Rory waiting for her food. Rory says "I get to leave first" and runs off. Jess chases after her. Rory says he doesn’t get to walk away. It’s her town. She leaves. Jess asks Rory to stop running, that she looks like an idiot. Jess almost begs Rory to stop - that he wants to talk with her.
Rory says she has thought about the moment of seeing him again after he took off without a note or anything. A year has passed without a word, so he couldn’t possibly have a good excuse for that. Rory says she has imagined a hundred different scenarios and great last lines, and she is very curious to see what he has to say. Rory doesn’t want to sit - she wants to know what he has to say. Jess sighs.
"I love you."
And with that, Jess leaves. Again.
I can’t post the screencaps at this time, but I’ll work on resuming those resources soon.

I partially agree on the Luke thing, I think she figures if he wants to do it and can do it, likes to do it, it’s a good way to save money. But at the same time, if she was flush with money she would have called in a repair man when Luke didn’t call back.

Why does Jess tell Rory he loves her, then leave her again?
I think he left because he realised that he could not have Rory. I’m not sure why, but that is why i think Jess leaves! Jess is awesome!

One of my favorite episodes ever! I love episodes that shows Lorelai’s caring side towards Luke like “Dead Uncle and Vegetables”. I think Luke went to fix Lorelai’s window when he was drunk to seek comfort from her. I love the barbie band-aid scene it’s so cute. Lorelai is so good at telling Luke what she sees when he doesn’t. I like when Lorelai marched over to Jess afterwards to defend Luke when he couldn’t defend himself. The things she said to Jess was more of a slap in the face than if she actually hit him.
I think Luke gave TJ a second chance because of what Lorelai told him about Liz appreciating him so much.
My favorite scene in the entire episode is when Luke gives Lorelai the earrings with the campfire in the background and Lorelai looking super gorgeous… such a beautiful shot! I think the earrings were Luke’s token of appreciation to Lorelai for being there for him. He might not be able to say how he feels but he shows it his way.
