Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Rory is still on ‘finals’ time so it’s 3am and she’s doing laundry and making mac & cheese. Talking non-stop, including about getting a summer job. Lorelai locks her in her room.
The test run at the Inn is coming up. Michel wants to bring his dogs as his ‘friends’. Doors are still missing. Michel is fuming about his Chow’s. Would have given birth to them if he could have, so thinks it’s unfair. Kirk is there delivering wood so Lorelai invites him and Lulu to the test run. Sookie has hired 7 people for the kitchen, hoping 2 would be bad because she’s only budgeted for 5. But all are good. Lorelai is a little flustered about Luke coming to the Inn. He was invited before ‘anything happened.’ Lorelai hugs Sookie, wishing her a happy wedding anniversary. Sookie had forgotten!
Rory wakes up with a post-it on her head about lunch at Luke’s. She’s surrounded by her folded laundry.
Lane is playing video games with Rory. Lane pulls out chips from under the floor boards - she’s back to that, to hide food from the boys. Rory tells Lane about Jess. She doesn’t mention Dean though. She talks about how Jess ditched her twice already, being unsure if he’d do it again. He was otherwise perfect. And how with Dean, she always knew he’d be there for her. Rory starts with
"he is/was…. I was safe."
Rory says she blew it.
Lorelai is staring at Luke very weird. Lorelai asks Rory is she notices anything different about Luke. A vibe or attitude. Did he look differently at Lorelai? Rory is out of the loop, so Lorelai takes her outside and says
"I think I’m dating Luke."
Lorelai says she went to the wedding with Luke and had a great time. And says that "Luke can waltz" in a very impressed way - in a sexual way, Rory thinks. And he walked her home and asked her to a movie. All together, it may add up. And there was a ‘moment’, she says. Lorelai isn’t sure if that was his plan or if she’s reading into it.
Rory reminds Lorelai that it’s Luke - he is ‘the’ Luke. She can’t just date him. The town will know everything.
"When you are with Luke, you are with Luke."
And it would be bad if it didn’t work out. Rory asks if Lorelai wants to be dating Luke. They go back inside to see if they can read Luke. He comes to see if she’s ok, and Lorelai falls into the table. Rory waves at Dean, but he doesn’t wave back.
Gilmore dinner. Emily and Richard are openly bickering. Emily asks Rory if she wants to go to Europe with her, to ‘do it right.’ Quite the unexpected question for everyone. Lorelai then asks Emily & Richard to come to the Inn, for the ’single most important’ event in her life, after Rory of course. Her parents would not want to miss that, she says. Later, she tells Rory that she wants to lock her parents in one place to either reconcile or kill each other.
Kirk comes to Luke with a big issue. He has never spent the night with Lulu. They have had ‘lots and lots of sex’, but he has night terrors. And it always ends up with him on the roof naked. He doesn’t want to scare Lulu. He thinks that he loves her. So, he called the Inn to move into the room next to Luke’s, and asks that Luke interrupt him if it sounds like he is hurting Lulu.
It’s the day of the Inn opening. The doors are still not there. Sookie still loves all her cook staff. The guests are arriving, and so are the doors (Lorelai loves Tom like a ‘two dollar whore’ for that).
Rory goes to find Dean and talk. Rory wants to know why Dean is mad. She told Jess to go. Rory said she didn’t ask Jess to come, she did as Dean to come. She had to tell Dean to leave so she could tell Jess to leave. Dean was worried that Rory was back with Jess. But even if she were, why would it bother Dean? Dean says he doesn’t want Rory with Jess. There is a lot going on that is more significant in terms of body language. Rory just keeps talking, assuming Dean doesn’t want Rory with someone that doesn’t treat her right…. because he’s her friend…. He is leaning in to kiss Rory, when Tom says his name.
The guests follow their doors to their rooms. Lorelai has Miss Patty promise to be a pain, so they can work out the kinks. Taylor, meanwhile, has 14 complaints already on his own comment form.
Kirk asks Michel come to take everything out of his room. Emily & Richard come, quite annoyed from their 20 minute ride together. Lorelai send them to the bungalow. Luke comes, with flowers for Lorelai. Lorelai is flustered. She then runs into door #7. Rory laughs at Lorelai’s rambling nervousness. Lorelai smiles about her flowers.
Jackson is wearing his Creedence t-shirt anniversary gift from Sookie. He’s pleased. Miss Patty and Babette are wearing the Dragonfly robes, and Luke is just staring at his plate. Babette’s robe had come open earlier. Lorelai and Luke share a sweet smile. Then Lorelai runs into a waiter. Sookie tries to pump Taylor for criticism for her wait staff. No luck. The opening is going perfectly.
Lorelai leaves the kitchen and has an unexpected guest - Jason. He wants to talk. He gave her space, but doesn’t want to be broken up. He refuses to leave. Wants to work it out with her, and is not leaving until they do. Lorelai says she can’t do it, but may be a little swayed by his sincerity.
Kirk and Lulu go to bed. Lorelai tells Rory that they locked the kitchen staff in with Michel and 6 quit, so now they need to start hiring again. Backfired. Lorelai asks Rory to get some CDs. Luke watches as Lorelai brings some food to Jason. Watches as Jason tells Lorelai he refuses to let go of things that are important to him. Babette fills Luke in on who Jason is and his history with Lorelai.
Emily comes yelling at Lorelai for being stuck out there. Not a romantic place for her and Richard. And Lorelai had sent them room service, instead of having them come to dinner. Lorelai can’t hide her sarcasm when she asks why Emily & Richard don’t want to be together. Emily knows that Lorelai knows about them being separated, and thinks it was cruel to put them together like that. Lorelai said it was a chance for them to do something special. Emily is about to go sit in the living room, but sees Jason. Then Richard comes in to say it’s time to go. So Jason asks for their room.
Dean came looking for Rory, who is at the house getting CDs. Dean starts talking about their almost-kiss. Rory just says ‘Lindsay’. Dean says it’s not working with Lindsay. They aren’t happy. That "it wasn’t…" Rory suggests therapy or a trip together. Dean says it’s over. They both think it.
Dean says things happen for a reason, he’ll be happy again. And is edging close to Rory, putting his arms on her. Rory mumbles
"I can’t believe that this is… that we’re…"
Dean can. And he kisses Rory. Then places her down on the bed.
Luke and Jason are the last still up. Luke introduces himself and sits down. Jason introduces himself as Lorelai’s friend, but also that they are still dating. That they are ‘working through’ a rough patch. Luke says he’s happy for them, but seems dumbfounded. Jason is off in the bathroom, and Luke meets Lorelai on his way up to bed. He says he’s feeling pretty stupid.
Luke asks if he’s a mysterious man? He thinks he’s been clear on his intentions. The wedding, movie invite and flowers. He may not have said anything official, but what was he supposed to say? Luke is hurt and angry. She went along with it all, but then her ‘boyfriend’ shows up there. He had to listen to Jason say ‘it’s right’ and to ask himself why he’s been doing all of this for if she’s taken. Lorelai’s jaw drops - she follows him outside as he tries to go. Lorelai says
"I’m not taken."
Lorelai says they broke up. Luke doesn’t want to calm down, and that he did exactly what the book said. Luke says he’s never bought flowers for someone before. Luke mentions ‘the moment’ when he walked Lorelai home. Lorelai agrees there was a moment. Luke goes in to kiss Lorelai - she asks what he’s doing. Luke takes charge and asks her to stand still, then kisses her. It was good. Lorelai then has to tell Luke to stand still so she can kiss him again. They are both overwhelmed in the moment.
Just as they are about to go for round three, Kirk is yelling. And running down the stairs naked. Luke has to chase after him.
Lorelai runs home looking for Rory. Saying ‘oh my God.’ And that Rory is missing everything. Big ‘wow’ things are happening. She has come back for Band-Aids and a camera. Rory has not replied, while Lorelai is going about all this. Rory comes walking out of her room, looking back. Dean comes out. Rory says he came over to ‘borrow something.’ Rory’s hair is all messed up. Dean leaves. Lorelai walks to the room - sees that the bed is not made. Rory doesn’t deny it - and apologizes for not telling Lorelai first.
Rory says she didn’t know it was going to happen. That Dean was going to show up. Rory says she’s ok and that they were safe. Rory says she’s lucky, because Dean is… Rory asks if Lorelai is glad that it happened with someone good who loves her? Lorelai just says ‘he’s married.’ Rory says she doesn’t understand the situation, but admits that Dean is still married. Rory tells Lorelai about it not working with Lindsay. Lorelai asks if Dean told Rory he was leaving Lindsay? That they are getting divorced? Rory, the girl who thinks everything through, she didn’t get around to talking about those things? Rory says he’s not a married guy - that he’s ‘her’ Dean.
Lorelai says he’s not Rory’s Dean, he’s Lindsay’s Dean. That Rory is the Other Woman. Lorelai says it’s not over until Dean is out of the house. Lorelai is stunned when Rory said he took the ring off while he was with Rory. Lorelai asks if Lindsay knows that Dean loves Rory? Rory argues that Lindsay is not good for him. Lorelai tells Rory she
"can’t be one of those girls that blames the wife for forcing the husband to cheat."
Rory says Dean wasn’t cheating, but Lorelai says he was. And that Rory was cheating with him. Rory sarcastically asks what her first time should have been, when Lorelai comments that’s not how it should be. Lorelai says with someone single. Lorelai says she didn’t raise Rory to be the girl who sleeps with someone else’s husband. Rory brings up that Lorelai slept with Chris when he was with Sherry.
Lorelai follows Rory, asking more questions. Is there a plan? What if he doesn’t leave Lindsay? Rory thinks Lorelai is just mad because she didn’t tell her before. Lorelai says that Rory proved she was not ready for this step yet by her choice in men. It doesn’t matter if Dean was her boyfriend first. Rory runs outside, telling Lorelai she hates her for ruining it for her.
Rory goes outside and calls Dean, but Lindsay picks up. Rory can’t say anything. She hangs up. Falls to the ground. And starts to cry.

yup definetly a great episode..yea lukes speech did help lorelai decide between him and Jason..i mean lorelai just relaized now she had no feelings for jason and lorelai wants to be with luke. Sadly Dean did tell Rory what she needed to hear and it sucks because in later episodes dead gets mad at her when she goes to his door i mean c’mon it wasnt her fault entirely. Rory relaizes she is the other woman later but at the moment she gets caught up with the idea that he belonged to her first and how lindsey isnt good for him. She beleived that Dean was through with Lindsey too easily..
To rory dean is safe and that appeals more to her than Jess being undependable I dont this is a close call if i was rory at that time talking to Lane, I would feel that Dean is the better one because past events showed he was reliable. Being reliiable is an important quality but on the other hand i dont think i would have dismissed Jess as quickly as she did..i mean i wouldnt immideatly be with him, but i would let him know that this is who I am and where i live and maybe start out as friends again…

Season four was the last great season, after that it was steadily down hill. Five had its moments(jews and Chinese food being my favourite), but it was the beginning of the end.

I just absolutely love the opening of this episode, Rory’s mad post-finals high and the way Lorelai locks her up saying something along the lines of “glad to have you back home”. I also love that Lorelai and Luke finally kiss, I whooped at the tv when I first saw this episoode.
This episode aslo marks the start of Rory’s rebellion and of her becoming her own person, which I loved, she became this real character for me, instead of this perfect, sweet, nice, one-dimensonal character - she went of the deep end for a while, made some poor choices and bad decisions, but it made her more real with flaws and ups and downs like the rest of us. I know most people won’t agree with me on this, but I actually thought this was a good character development even though if she had been a real person and a friend of mine I probably would have had to fight the urge to slap her upside the head and would have most definitely told her to quit her moaning and take controll of her life.
