Gilmore Girls 5.06 "Norman Mailer, I’m Pregnant!"
Original Air Date: October 26, 2004 (Recap date: March 21, 2008)
Recap & Discussion

Discussion Questions:

  • Why didn’t Lorelai have Luke fix her porch light earlier?
  • Does Doyle kiss butt too much? Is that not a good quality for a leader?
  • Do you like Rory’s feature ideas?
  • Does Logan enjoy having people serve him, even at the paper?
  • Does Rory lack originality as a writer?
  • Is Sookie overreacting to the lunch cancellation?
  • Were you surprised at Sherry’s decision?
  • Do you think Rory has a scoop without Logan?
  • Why do you think Sookie hired Kirk without telling Lorelai?
  • Why do you think Sookie took so long to realize she was pregnant?
  • Does Logan have a crush on Rory? Or just want to be ‘bad’ and give her a scoop she’s not supposed to have?
  • Is Rory right - would Chris mess things up between Luke & Lorelai?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:

Lorelai’s logic is to leave the Jeep lights running vs. changing her porch light. She searches for her keys while Luke is waiting to go to the movies. Lorelai grabs her socks from the oven, where she’s been warming them. Oven, not dryer. The keys are found stuck in the back door - so Lorelai covers the knob with a towel and they leave.

Paris has a dream that Rory is trying to steal her religion beat on the paper, but Rory wants features. And attempts to convince Rory of that. One of Glen’s articles was picked up by the New York Times. Glen is not overly happy by it. Doyle is jealous and annoyed that Glen seems to get ahead so easily, with so little talent. Rory takes the article home and, when Lorelai notices she has Bambi voice, asks Rory what’s wrong. Rory says she’s behind at the paper. Her summer was not as productive - no internships, no articles in the Times. Rory has a lot of catching up to do - expects to be working constantly. When Luke hits his head in the oven again, Lorelai has a good laugh. Rory notices that Lorelai is happy.

Norman Mailer is at the Dragonfly Inn conducting an interview with a reporter - for the third time this week, he’s there. Sookie is annoyed that all he ever orders is iced tea. It’s like an insult to her cooking, and he takes up a whole table for 4.

Paris pretends to be surprised when she gets the religion beat. Rory gets her features beat and pitches a few ideas to Doyle. Doyle gets distracted when Logan walks in hanging off some girl.

"He’s back."

Logan pats Doyle on the back, and Doyle becomes supplicant quickly. Logan says hi to Rory. Doyle gossips to Rory that Logan took the past year off to party with his friends and sank his father’s yacht - a real piece of work. His rich father finally brought him back. His father is Mitchum Huntzberger, the newspaper guy. Doyle has spent two years kissing Logan’s butt. Rory picks her downloading story as her first feature.

Logan then puts on a fedora with ‘press’ written on a tag and pretends to be working the ‘beat’ as Smitty. Rory is smiling, so Logan winks back. Then Logan leans back for a nap.

Norman Mailer is still at the Inn continuing his interview. Sookie tries to give them a menu. Even lies about it being "stump the chef" day, to see if they will order anything. No luck, they just ask for lemon for the iced tea.

Rory has a half dozen coffee cups in front of her, and a pile of research for her feature on music downloads. Rory is telling her idea to Dean, who is at Doose’s wearing a coyboy hat. Taylor is trying to cash in on the "trucker" crowd by being open 24 hours, and thus Dean is also working more shifts. They can’t pin down a date for to see each other for about 2 weeks!

Paris has been working her religion beet intensively. She asks Rory how her downloading story is going - if she found an angle not already covered. Rory says for sure she has a fresh angle. But looks worried.

The accountant is going over financials with Lorelai, Michel and Sookie. So far, things are good. They are booked under capacity, but still growing. The first year always takes more to make a profit. The accountant suggests taking some of the financial burdens off the list for a while. Breakfast and dinner are breaking even but lunch, for example, is just hemorrhaging money. A full staff for no customers. Sookie gets very defensive about it and thinks Anne the accountant hates her.

Lorelai has a private talk with Sookie. Sookie blames it on Norman Mailer. Sookie says fine, but seems very very hurt and angry. Even if it is temporary.

Rory is interviewing some guy about downloading music. Rory is running out of questions to ask him - his insight is no different than any other reported angles. Rory decides to go for coffee. She stops at the bathroom. While there, a drunk girl in a ball gown with a gorilla mask walks in. She says ’shhhh’ when she sees Rory, then leaves. A curious Rory follows her out and hears the girl say "In Omnia Paratus" as she gets into a waiting SUV.

Lorelai is taking advantage of the new nacho & slushee options at Doose’s. Chris calls Lorelai - he can’t get Gigi to stop crying. Can’t get her to stay in her crib or eat either. Sherry is not there and he has nobody else to turn to.

Lorelai comes to the rescue. Neither Chris nor Gigi have slept in days. Lorelai turns the crib against the wall so Gigi can’t climb out. Lorelai asks where Sherry is. Chris says Sherry is in Paris - and she’s not coming back. When Chris got back from a work trip, the nanny handed him a note from Sherry that she had decided to take a job in Paris. That it was Chris’ turn to be with Gigi. Sherry had to do this for ‘her.’

Lorelai tells Chris to go take a shower. He doesn’t feel like he can be the dad. Raise Gigi on his own. He can, because he has to. Chris says he’s not like Lorelai - he’s not a superhero. Lorelai encourages Chris - tells him that he can do it.

Doyle has a pile of notes from religious officials who are pissed off with Paris. She has threatened and stalked religious leaders all over the city - he’s so proud! Rory tells Doyle she wants to change her story, there was nothing new in the download one. Doyle admits her pitch was boring.

Rory tells Doyle what she saw, and the phrase, "In Omnia Paratus", which means "ready for anything." Rory found the phrase connected with a secret society at Yale dating back to the 1800s. The phrase is their motto. And there is an old photo from the Yale Daily News of people jumping from a bridge with umbrellas, with the phrase written on the photo. An article on whether ‘The Life and Death Brigade’ actually exists. Doyle says the paper has never had more than leads on this story.

Lorelai is waiting for Rory outside the Gilmore house, worried she wore the same outfit last week. The maid lets them in, and eventually tells them Emily is not there. Richard is gone on business too. They decide to get crazy - order pizza there. Take off their shoes.

Lorelai dishes about Sherry leaving Chris and Gigi. Rory seems a little disturbed that Chris called Lorelai and that she went to help. Lorelai says she’ll check back in again on Monday to make sure Chris is ok.

Rory goes back to work late at the paper. She finds an old article about an arrest of members of the ’secret society’, which includes reference to an Elias Huntzberger.

Luke calls Lorelai, who for some reason has to run out. The reason - Kirk dressed as a hot dog passing out flyers for lunch at the Dragonfly. Passing them out in front of Luke’s Diner. Lorelai didn’t ask Kirk to do this - but knows who did.

Rory tracks down Logan to see if he has any insight on her Life and Death Brigade article. Logan plays dumb. Rory says he’s in it, since her proof ties his grandfather, and therefore father, to the club. Rory claims to have plenty of info without him. Plus, she has his routine now, so she can track him to the club. Logan wishes her luck with the tracking and her great scoop.

Lorelai confronts Sookie about the flyers. Sookie pretends ignorance about lunch being cancelled. She says she did not agree to it. Lorelai asks why there are seven people in the kitchen when nobody is in the dining room besides Norman Mailer. Lorelai puts her foot down - there is no more lunch for now. Sookie tells her crew, then tells Norman Mailer. And goes off the deep end with Norman Mailer about not ordering food.

Lorelai brings Sookie back to the kitchen and asks her why she’s so nutty about Norman Mailer and about lunch being cancelled. Sookie can see herself doing it, but doesn’t know why. Then Sookie realizes what it is - she’s pregnant! Sookie gives Lorelai a small hug, then goes to give Norman Mailer a big hug.

Logan sends Rory an IM at the Yale Daily office:

"Hey Ace, I’ve got a proposition for you."

Rory isn’t sure at first who it’s from, but his smirk gives it away. Logan agrees to give Rory the scoop, upon a few conditions. Barely containing his smile, Logan writes back that the first condition is that Rory has to agree before knowing the conditions. He asks "Ace" if she’s in or out? Rory says she’s in. But, Logan has already left before then.

Lorelai goes back to Luke, who is annoyed. Not about Kirk, but about the bozos only ordering iced tea. Norman Mailer has migrated to Luke’s!

Rory pays a visit to Chris to ask him to stay away from Lorelai. Rory says Lorelai is in a relationship and it’s great. Rory thinks Chris’ll mess it up. Rory says to call anyone, even her, but not to call Lorelai. Chris looks stunned. Rory leaves.

I really love this episode. I love Rory & Logan 2gether. Shame that he leaves. I think Rory is right. Everytime Chris comes back he always leaves them and Lorelai is left in a mess.
    Lorelai & Luke 4ever.
    lol

I think its pretty obvious that Logan has a crush on Rory in this episode. We have also learned Logan called Rory “Ace” for the first time which would become his affectionate nickname for her. This is one of my favorite episodes of Gilmore Girls.
