Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Richard is serving some kabobs with the pre-dinner drinks for the girls. Emily smells the bbq and comes over and literally pulls the skewer from Lorelai’s mouth. Richard argues that he gets less time with them, so he should be able to serve appetizers if he wishes to. When Lorelai & Rory come in later, they are full but pretend not to be.
Rory’s cell phone rings and, while she’s out of the room, Emily drills Lorelai about whether or not Rory has finally found a boy at Yale. Rory comes back and easily discloses that it was Dean, and that they’re back together. Later, Lorelai gets annoyed with Rory for disclosing about Dean when she’d gotten her off the hook already. Although they left the house very full, it’s seconds and Lorelai is saying she’s hungry.
Emily goes out to the pool house to have a serious talk with Richard.
Liz is back in town and digs for details from Lorelai about her and Luke. She’s in town to look for a place to buy in the off-season when they are not traveling with the Renaissance Fair. Luke doesn’t seem thrilled about it, and he thinks Stars Hollow is too quiet for Liz and TJ.
Liz brings up some of Luke’s specialty dishes - his gumbo and his Mexican food with home-made tortillas and paella - all complicated dishes. And how he made dozens of recipes to find the perfect lasagne. Lorelai has never experienced the gourmet Luke. He promises to cook Lorelai the most amazing meal of her life.
The exchange student staying with Mrs. Kim comes to the diner to put up flyers. Lane tries to send her away, but the girl is very hungry. Flax seed muffin month. Lane gives her some fries - just the smell is enough to overpower the fact that they are a gateway food and the ‘Devil’s fingers.’
Paris thinks another older professor is hitting on her - or rather, that all faculty over 50 think she’s easy. After word of Asher got out. Rory thinks she’s crazy.
Emily & Richard call Rory together to invite her to a Yale Alumni event they’re hosting at their place next week. But, they do it in a more sneaky way. First saying they have to cancel the regular Friday dinner because they ‘forgot’ about this event, then casually inviting Rory to come. Emily even begs for her weekly Rory fix. Emily & Richard fake laugh about there being no steak-on-a-stick.
Lane gives the Korean girl, Kyon, some chili fries, then gives Zack a big hug for getting them concert tickets. TJ and Liz come walking in, TJ saying that he’s in escrow. They bought a house! The first one they saw. Without an inspection. Luke is worried by all that.
Rory tells Lorelai her Friday obligation is off because of the alumni dinner. Rory doesn’t want to get out of it either - she’s excited that Emily & Richard are throwing the party together. So, she doesn’t care if she was being manipulated because they were together.
Mrs. Kim comes up to Zack calling him a dirty Devil boy who will burn in Hell. Zack has no clue what’s going on. Mrs. Kim says "she" is an innocent girl, and Zack is a wild pig of filth. Kyon told Mrs. Kim that Zack put his hands on Lane.
Rory is having a lunch with Dean in the Doose’s store room. If you can call it a lunch, since the food is all damaged. Rory asks Dean what he thought of her Life and Death Brigade piece. He has no specific feedback for her. Rory suggests that Dean meet her in Hartford at 8:30, when she figures she’ll be done with the party.
Lorelai comes to Luke’s wearing a French maid’s uniform - the closest he’ll get to her cleaning up after their dinner. Luke is making lamb and artichoke stew, penne with pesto, potatoes, roasted rosemary with garlic focaccia, tomatoes stuffed with goat cheese and ricotta cheesecake with Amaretto cookies to go with the coffee. Lorelai calls Luke the perfect man.
Rory arrives to the chaos of setting up for the alumni event. Richard & Emily make a big deal about Rory’s dress. But suggest, ‘for kicks’, that Rory go up to Emily’s hairdresser.
Zack is still freaking about Mrs. Kim when Lane comes home. The cursing freaked him out. Zack says he’s not good with parents, he’s not that guy:
"Nobody brings me home to mom for a reason."
Lane realizes how Mrs. Kim found out, and assures Zack she’ll take care of it. And of the hellhounds.
TJ comes over to Luke’s - he and Liz had a huge fight. TJ won’t leave. Luke tries to sort it out and have Lorelai stir the sauce. Lorelai is unsure of how to do that, but tries. Luke is sorry TJ had a fight, but tells him he’s married and needs to go back. TJ begs to stay there for a while, the fight being too fresh. Luke gives up. So, Lorelai and Luke try to move on with their dinner while TJ cries in the corner.
Emily has organized Rory’s up-do and even makeup, and comes out with one more thing - a diamond necklace. And earrings. And a tiara! Rory tries to say they’re too expensive, but that’s how Emily wants Rory to look.
Rory comes downstairs and finds that it’s not just Yale alumni who are there, but also their prominent and single sons. Rory does a survey of the room then asks to speak privately with her grandparents. Rory asks if any alumni have daughters. Emily & Richard play dumb about not noticing there were only boys in the room. Emily drags Rory to the "Campbell like the soup" boy.
TJ still needs a ‘minute’. Lorelai is enjoying her dinner, but Luke is tense and angry. Lorelai invites TJ to come eat, but he declines. He just wants the time. 30 seconds turns into 10 minutes…
Rory is stuck amidst a swarm of boys talking about muscle cars. Rory excuses herself and goes to call Lorelai. Lorelai says "I told you" right as she picks up. Rory explains about her night, how she feels like she’s being auctioned off. Rory has been played, but she’ll stick it out until Dean comes for her. Lorelai tries to call her parents, but gets stuck with a maid who doesn’t speak English.
Liz comes to get TJ, who is still not keen to move. Both Liz and TJ start yelling, accusing each other of throwing tantrums. It’s clear they both are in denial about their own personal tantrums. Liz locks herself in Luke’s bathroom. TJ is back to square one. Lorelai goes to work on Liz. Ah, family.
Emily has sent one of the boys over to Rory, who was standing alone. He starts to insinuate things - he’s all keen on playing into the matchmaking. Then, it’s Logan to the rescue! He puts his arm around Rory and apologizes for being late. He pretends to be Rory’s boyfriend of a year and a half.
It seems Logan is familiar with Emily’s food, which brings to light that he’s familiar with Emily. Richard comes by, and it seems he and Logan know each other through Logan’s parents. Logan suggests a new tactic to keep the grandparents away - form a sub-party. Logan calls over Finn and grabs some champagne.
Lane goes to see Kyon, first making sure Mrs. Kim was out. She asks why Kyon ratted her out to her mother. Kyon is convinced that Mrs. Kim can read her thoughts and spot if she’s keeping secrets or telling lies. Lane decides to tell Kyon some of the lies that Mrs. Kim spouts. All little lies to keep her from doing things, like watch tv. Lane passes on some good tips. But it overwhelms Kyon.
Liz and TJ are in the bathroom, yelling. Luke suggests that Lorelai go home - he doesn’t know how long the fight will continue, and they are his family. Luke gives Lorelai the cheesecake as a parting gift.
Logan has set up a crazy party in the pool house. Rory is drinking and having a good time. Logan brings up Rory’s article on the Life & Death Brigade and compliments her on catching the spirit of it. He liked her style. Provides some good feedback. Logan then asks who of the meat market Rory will pick. The guys all say ‘pick me’. Rory says she should let her boyfriend help her pick. Logan seems surprised. He asks if Emily & Richard know. Rory says they do. Then Rory realizes the time - it’s 8:45. She’s late for Dean! Logan suggests all the boys follow to make sure the boy who has won Rory’s heart is good enough for her.
Rory staggers out the front door with a pile of loud guys behind her. Dean, who is waiting, doesn’t seem pleased to be meeting Rory’s Yale friends. Rory compliments Dean on his shirt, but Dean just looks down stunned, then over at the guys in the doorway, all wearing suits. Dean asks Rory what he’s doing there.
"I don’t belong here. Not anymore…. [Rory sighs] Do I?"
Rory can’t argue that. Dean tells Rory she looks good. Rory, on the verge of tears, watches as Dean gets in his truck and drives away.
Logan comes to Rory and tells her it will be ok. Rory says it won’t. Logan orders the troops back to the pool house for some serious ‘bucking up.’
"Come on, Ace. Nothing ever seems quite as bad after Finn’s ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ Except Finn’s ‘The Passion of the Christ.’"
Logan says this leaning close into Rory, just inches from her face. Definitely in her personal space. Rory has shed her one tear, and looks long and hard at Logan, who is smiling gently back at her. Still looking at Rory, Logan puts his arm around her and leads her back inside.
Lorelai makes another attempt to call Emily and finally gets through. She asks to speak with both her parents on the speaker phone. They deny it was a mating party for Rory. Richard says that Rory needs to be exposed to different things and different people in this new phase of her life. They argue that when Rory is ready to move on from Dean, she’ll have met some nice young men. They both re-iterate that Dean is not good enough for Rory.
Lorelai tells them it’s not their place to step in. Emily argues it is. They want more for her. Period.
"Now, obviously it is too late for you, but it is not too late for Rory. And we’re going to make sure she has the life she deserves."
Lorelai says Rory will choose her own path in life, and nothing they do will change that.
After they hang up, a car pulls up to the driveway. Lorelai goes to look. It’s a limo, and Rory gets out. She is giggling and having a great time. Logan asks her if she needs help, as Rory is clearly quite drunk. Nobody in the limo wants to see her go. Rory smiles and runs inside.

I love this epi too! Little Rory is growing up!
However each time I watch it I get really mad at Dean! I think this epi totally shows how weak he is, how unsure of himself and his relationship. He can’t be depended on! I can understand that it is difficult when you are moving in different directions, but it can still work. his problem is that he wants a little wife at home, can’t live with the idea that his girlfriend is destined for bigger things, but is also content with returning home to him at the end of her high powered day.
In some ways I’ve always thought Dean was the perfect guy for Rory, safe, sweet, caring. But he’s also posessive and jealous of the fact that he isn’t part of her whole world, that she enjoys other things too.
