Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Jackson is out to get food for Sookie’s cravings, but spots Lorelai and asks her to go into Doose’s. If he goes in, he’ll be swamped with town selectman queries. Lorelai agrees to go in, but has her own selectman question to bargain with.
Sookie is back home crying over People magazine - human interest stories are not allowed around pregnant Sookie. Sookie’s cravings have changed already, so the grocery run was a bust. Jackson will do anything for Sookie though. So sweet. Sookie may be certifiable, but she’s no Sherry (Christopher’s Sherry). That brings up the topic of Chris, and Lorelai is surprised she hasn’t heard from him again. That makes Lorelai a little worried, after how badly Chris was doing with Gigi.
Paris is fasting for Ramadan, in order to better write her article about Ramadan. It’s just made her even more cranky. Marty comes over with leftover yummy food from a catering brunch.
Lorelai calls from Luke’s behind-the-counter phone. A loophole to not being allowed to use her cell phone in the diner. Rory says it’s nice that they’re loopholey. Luke comes, though, and doesn’t like that Lorelai is on the phone. Insurance wouldn’t cover her if potatoes fell on her head. Thankfully, the phone has a long cord.
Rory says they can meet at Friday night dinner. Paris swats Marty with a newspaper. Rory pitches Lorelai an idea. She thinks it’s stupid to have drinks with Richard and dinner with Emily. Rory says they need to stop humoring them - they should divide and conquer. Get them in a room and talk some sense into them. So, Rory will eat dinner with one, and Lorelai with the other, this Friday. Rory wants her grandparents to know that she is not ok with their separation and is convinced they aren’t either. She thinks they’re too proud to admit they miss each other. Lorelai agrees to eat with Emily. Marty seeks sanctuary from Paris in Rory’s room. Then they chow down on the leftovers.
Lorelai thinks that Luke is gloating about the Rory & Dean breakup after Lorelai tells him that Rory is doing fine with it. TJ comes over because he hasn’t had a shower in 3 days because their new place doesn’t have water yet. How? TJ was installing a towel rack, and had an accident that resulted in demo-ing the upstairs bathroom, which damaged the pipes. He’s being a do-it-yourself-er. Luke decides to help him out. TJ helps himself to coffee and a donut before going to shower.
Michel has recognized some guests that stayed at the Independence Inn. He has a booking system that includes information about what people look like. He’s convinced these people are the "bathrobe bandits" that stole bathrobes every time they visited. Lorelai won’t allow him to remove their robes. They can always charge them if the robes are stolen.
Lorelai calls Chris, who says he’s been too busy to call. Lorelai can sense that Chris is being hesitant in talking to her. Lorelai gets the hint when everything is "fine" with him and decides there’s not much more to say. They are about to hang up, but Chris then decides to apologize for calling Lorelai before during his Gigi panic. Lorelai says it’s fine, he can call anytime. They "have bonds", she says. Lorelai says Chris should bring Gigi by next time he’s around. He will be near on Saturday, so Lorelai suggests he come by for lunch.
Without any pre-warning, Richard has nothing to serve Rory for dinner. Rory says she doesn’t get to spend much time with him now, hence the split for dinner. Rory insinuates much about the separation and the "for now" pool house. But that he should go back to something comfortable, to something "that he’s depended on for 40 years." That if something is around that long, it must be for a reason. Richard says Rory is lovely. And finds a frozen pizza to make.
Lorelai is early to her dinner with Emily (since there is no appetizer hour), so Emily is unprepared. Emily sits next to Lorelai on the couch, which is unusual. Lorelai is blunt about her question - Emily says that she and Richard are not getting back together. Emily is convinced that it’s over because Richard did not pass her the butter at an event last week. Lorelai almost chokes on her drink when Emily says she wants to date. Emily asks Lorelai how to let a man know that she’s available. Such as telling her that ‘hello’ is not too forward.
Rory is excited at her progress with Richard, but stunned with Lorelai’s news of Emily wanting to date. Lorelai says Rory may have better luck if they switch again next week. Lorelai invites Rory to lunch at the Dragonfly the next day.
Lorelai walks Chris around the Inn. Chris can’t help but smile at Lorelai as they sit down to lunch. Chris says he’s proud of Lorelai for accomplishing everything at the Inn. Rory arrives and is not impressed to see Chris. Lorelai gets called away for something, so Rory has an opportunity to share her anger for not doing what he promised. Rory doesn’t believe Chris when he says Lorelai called him. Chris said he had no good reason to refuse lunch. Chris says he and Lorelai have a long history and nothing can change that. Rory is still pissed.
Lorelai comes back from dealing with Michel going through the suitcases of the suspected bathrobe bandits. She had to comp their bill. Plus, two robes in addition to the ones they stole. Lorelai is hitting silence with her story. Chris decides to leave. Rory immediately asks Lorelai if she called Chris, or if he called her. Rory seems stunned that Chris did not initiate the lunch. Rory tells Lorelai about her fears of Chris messing things up with Luke.
Rory thinks she lets Chris take over when he’s around, and can’t break free of him. As if she can’t help it. So, Rory asks what Luke said when he heard Lorelai would be having lunch with Chris. Lorelai says he didn’t care. Lorelai says she appreciates Rory’s concern.
Lorelai later tells Sookie about the family gathering. Lorelai says she lied to Rory - she didn’t tell Luke about the lunch. So, was there any weird reason Lorelai didn’t tell Luke? Lorelai thought it was no big deal. But, maybe it was. She should have told him.
Jackson came home to giant scissors on the doorstep. He thinks it’s a threat. And he already told the town he wouldn’t do ribbon cutting ceremonies. At the mention of town meetings, Jackson says there won’t be any more town meetings. A 200-year-old tradition over. Hell waits for Jackson at those meetings, and he’s had enough.
Lorelai is at Luke’s attempting to tell her bathrobe bandit story again, but again it receives no enthusiastic response. So, then Lorelai slips in that Rory and Christopher didn’t receive it well either. Luke perks up at the mention of Christopher. Lorelai tells him about the lunch. Luke seems satisfied with the story. And Lorelai is relieved.
Emily calls Lorelai asking her to come over right away. Emily has a date with Simon McLain in an hour and doesn’t know what to wear. She "hello’d" him and now is going to dinner. Emily threatens to hold all her DAR functions at the Dragonfly if Lorelai doesn’t come right over. Emily is close to a panic attack at the concept of her date, as well as not being prepared in any way to go on it. Emily remembers her wedding day and the concept of being with Richard forever. Lorelai makes sure this is really what Emily wants. She says it is.
Miss Patty hails down Jackson in his truck with a story about her accompanist falling down inside her studio. But, it was a trick. It’s a town meeting! Kirk locks him in.
TJ and Luke are working well together fixing up TJ’s bathroom. After some "new civilization" talk, Luke asks TJ if he’s a jealous man. TJ says no, but admits that jealousy landed him in jail twice before. Luke asks a "hypothetical" question about Liz having lunch with an ex. Luke seems to be reading something into the lunch, but TJ misunderstands and thinks the example is really about Liz. TJ gets into a rage.
Emily is on her date and they seem to be hitting it off well. Lots to talk about. Emily is simply beaming.
Luke and Lorelai come home from a movie date. Lorelai is very sad that Luke can’t stay the night - he has early deliveries at the Diner in the morning. Luke says, "by the way", that he’s fine with Lorelai having lunch with Chris.
Paris is breaking her fast in style - a whole table of take-out food. Like the first night at Yale - a variety of sources. Rory goes to Marty’s to study. College is making him feel stupid - every day telling him things he doesn’t know. What’s with that? They take a break and chat. Rory talks about her fun week, including her break up with her boyfriend. Marty perks up at that. Rory mentions her dad and how she waited years for him to show up, but now that he is… Marty talks about his dad, then brings up the boyfriend thing again. But Rory has fallen asleep.
Chris calls Lorelai. The answering machine picks up and Lorelai smiles to hear him. She hesitates picking it up after he mentions the lunch. Lorelai decides not to pick up the phone or to call Chris back.
Emily’s date drives her home. Emily says a second date would be lovely. Although she goes in smiling, Emily looks around sadly. She starts to cry.
