Aliens in America Episode Highlights:
- Justin and Claire both use DVDs to do their book reports
, but Claire got there first - Raja, despite his aptitude, is stuck in ESL with rudimentary language books
- Sandy, a "concerned parent" thinks Madame Bovary is smut, but Franny blows her off
- Controversy sparks Justin to pick up the actual book and read it, instead of the CliffsNotes version. It’s everything Sandy thought it would be.
- Justin has always loved to draw, but at age 14 his pictures became more "mature", so he stopped showing his mom. His latest sketch is a big-boobed "The Adventures of Madame Bovary"
- The Atlas where Justin hides his sketches chooses that week to fall open and expose the drawings to a very disturbed Franny
- Franny says that Justin used to draw ponies and now that book has turned him into a pornographer
- Justin runs away after he sees his parents with the notebook, so Gary has to go talk with him
- Justin says he’s compelled to keep drawing them, and doesn’t know why. But has for a couple of years. Justin shows the pile of notebooks with drawings that are hidden all around his room
- Gary decides to bow out from that talk, continuing the allusion to something other than drawings that this whole scene is meant to conjure up
- Franny joins the committee to ban Madame Bovary for the values it promotes. The principal doesn’t want to, because it’s "un-American," but his future career potential depends on banning it, so he does. And must continue with the "Smutty Books" list the committee gives him.
- Raja comes to check on Justin, who admits he thinks he’s obsessed with sex more than most people
- Justin casually hands Raja his notebooks while he talks, and Raja is exposed to the first-ever naked images of women he’s seen. Raja has to excuse himself
quickly. - Claire’s English class is supposed to compare the Pride and Prejudice book to the movie, forcing her to have to read the book
- Claire decides to use her mother to her advantage, telling her there’s a lot of sex in Pride and Prejudice
- Raja sneaks back into Justin’s room to take a notebook of images from the trash to "study" in order to help Justin, which he does all night and also at school. He’s feeling guilty and anxious about it too.
- Raja decides to trash the notebook, but it’s soon picked up by one of Justin’s friends, Dooley
- Raja has Google’d a website on teen sex that helps teens understand what normal is. He offers the info to Justin to help.
- Raja and Justin sit in the waiting room for Planned Teenhood, then Justin goes in to the counselor to ask if it’s ok to think about sex all the time, but it turns out that the center is a front for a religious method of prayer and self-punishment (enforced with a slap of the ruler)
- Claire and her friends watch smutty tv when they are freed from their book report assignment
- Franny is purging her house of smutty books, but Gary sneaks one of the classics off without her notice
- Raja has read Pride and Prejudice - it’s not censored in Pakistan. He tells Franny it’s an innocent story about love. Franny decides to read it, and Madame Bovary too.
- After briefly confronting Claire about the lack of smut in Pride & Prejudice, she goes to Sandy and the committee to say they’re going too fast. The committee are on the verge of censoring the dictionary now. Sandy thinks the books have tainted Franny.
- Gary overhears slapping in Justin’s room, so goes to investigate. Justin is hitting himself with the ruler.
- Gary decides now is the time to talk about what Justin is going through and shows Justin his book from high school. He used to make the letter "o" into breasts. Every "o" in the book, it took hours. Knowing he’s going through something normal does make Justin feel better
- Dooley has copied Justin’s version of Madame Bovary and is selling it to all the guys at school
