Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Everyone is trying very hard to keep things civil for Friday night dinner. Emily & Richard are still touchy about Yale though. Lolelai puts a temporary ban on talking about Yale and starts the night afresh. Richard wishes to yell at the people "who deserve it" but instead yells at Emily. Lorelai counts back from five and Richard then says "I love shrimp" to change the topic.
Emily asks how Luke is doing, if they are still engaged. She hasn’t received her "save the date" card. Emily persists on knowing when the wedding will be, so Lorelai blurts out June 3rd. Emily comments on how soon that is and that they haven’t seen Luke in a long time. Emily insists that Luke come to dinner the next Friday, as Richard will be traveling a lot. Emily plays Lorelai by suggesting Luke is not really the man she wants in her life if he won’t come to dinner that Friday. A "not no" becomes a "yes" and Emily says she’ll pick up some save the date cards for Lorelai.
Rory and Lorelai are starving after the dinner, so they prepare a second dinner of frozen pizza topped with tater tots. Rory asks how June 3rd popped out, and Lorelai says she just wanted to avoid the "I told you so" conversation, among others. They begin feasting on Pop Tarts. Lorelai wants a set of new Yale sweat pants, like what Rory is now sporting, and suggests Chris may want them too. A nice gesture for him paying for Yale.
Lorelai seems weirded out that Chris has not been contacting either of them since he popped up to pay for Yale. Rory reminds Lorelai that their agreement was for Chris to stay out of everything else. Lorelai seems disturbed by it all and suggests Rory invite him to Yale for lunch.
The board has voted Paris off as Editor of the Yale Daily News, but she’s holed up in her bunker. They haven’t been able to tell her. Rory says she should be the one to break the news. Paris has been dealing with calls from Yale alumni over all the mistakes in the paper. She also has a burner in there to heat up food and is making soup.
Rory says she and Paris have known each other for 5+ years and are best pals because they support each other in good times and in bad. Rory tells Paris it’s a "not so good time" for her at the paper. Rory tells Paris she was voted out. Paris knew it was a possibility and asks if everyone is waiting for her "perp" walk. Rory tells paris she doesn’t perp walk, that she walks tall. Rory reminds Paris she doesn’t need the editor job, she’s going to be a doctor and lawyer (surgeon and judge, Paris corrects). Rory says Paris is busy and doesn’t need that extra stress.
Paris decides to exit her bunker with an "announcement" that it’s apparent she is the story at the Yale Daily News and has overshadowed their journalistic work. So, she’s tendering her resignation. That confuses people. She ends with "goodnight and good luck" and leaves the office. Bill moves Paris’ status marker to say she’s left and everyone cheers. Except Rory, who is pouting.
Luke doesn’t want to go to the dinner and would prefer to skip the drinks portion of the evening to avoid all the small talk with Richard about stocks and the obvious hate from Emily. Lorelai says she’ll fake food poisoning to get them out of dessert early.
Michel confronts Lorelai about Luke being at the Dragonfly to do repairs when they have a handyman. Lorelai says Luke works for "snuggle bucks". Michel wants to supply Luke with a detailed list of fixes, like they do with Parker. Lorelai says Luke can "sense" when things need fixing.
All the staff at the Yale Daily News are in the office to vote for a new editor, but they keep getting 3 nominees with no obvious majority vote for any of them. They’ve been voting for three days. They need a new name, and Gilmore is suggested. Rory reminds them she doesn’t hold seniority, but they are past that, and she did bail them out before. It’s a majority vote for Rory Gilmore as new Editor! She takes over everything right away.
Rory gets back to her apartment to find all her stuff piled in the hall. And her keys don’t work. Rory knocks and Paris, very angrily, opens the door a crack. Paris has evicted Rory. Rory is now her enemy. Paris accuses Rory of lobbying to become the new editor. Paris throws back Rory’s speech about the paper being a headache and slams the door in Rory’s face.
Michel comes up to Luke about parking his "filthy green truck" in the guest parking. Michel then insists that Luke remove his hat when indoors, like a gentleman. Michel calls Luke a Peanuts character. Luke won’t take off his hat. Michel continues with his list of complaints regarding Luke talking to a guest that morning - giving directions is his job. Michel is yelling now about Luke flaunting the rules of the Dragonfly. Michel has one last rule - that Luke eat in the kitchen or in the barn, away from guests. Michel leaves saying how "wonderful" Parker is.
Rory is sitting on her furniture in the hall with a paper on her lap. She calls Logan to say there are no singles left with campus housing. The off-campus places are all gone, except for places much worse off than Paris’ joint. Logan asks why Rory needs a place, and she tells him that she was elected editor of the Yale Daily News. Logan is thrilled for her, thinks she’ll do a great job. Rory says "hotplate Harriet", aka Paris, took it badly and now she’s guarding her stuff until the movers come.
Logan tells Rory she can move in with him. He says it with a sigh and some hesitation, but he sounds sure. Logan says Rory is there half the time anyway and already has two drawers. Rory reminds Logan it’s a big step. Logan takes it lightly as just Rory needing a place and him having space. He says it would be fun. Rory says yes. Logan will get Colin and Finn to move Rory’s things.
Michel is counting out his 12 "obligatory" walnuts when Lorelai comes to speak with him about the spat with Luke. Michel calls Luke a cry baby. Lorelai says Luke doesn’t like to be yelled at by people he’s doing favors for. Lorelai also says that Parker is a not-so-handy handyman of 65. Michel says Luke misses things, so Lorelai says to write them down. Michel says no. The real reason comes out - they used to make the fix-it lists at Weston’s over coffee. Michel and Lorelai do this once a month, together. And he eats a whole piece of cake as their "thing" together. Michel thinks she forgot about those times. Lorelai said they were special, but saving money with Luke was nice.
Lorelai suggests they take the afternoon to go to Weston’s - to make Luke a list and brainstorm ideas for the Inn. Michel doesn’t want Lorelai’s pity cake. But they work it out and head for Weston’s.
Some girls check Christopher out as he and Rory walk around campus. Rory laments having hot parents. Rory shows Chris one of her old teachers, a Nobel prize winning economics teacher. He pretends to snore as they listen at the door. Chris wants to see Rory’s place. Rory wants to know why, then mentions that it’s messy.
Rory reluctantly takes Chris to her place. She looks freaked out. He’s in awe of the lobby and door man at the apartment. Rory hesitates in front of the door. Rory turns to Chris and says she has to be straight about something. Chris says "oops" but then Rory explains.
Rory says it was a weird day. It started great with her getting voted editor-in-chief at the paper (Chris is excited) but that her roommate Paris threw her out.
"It’s just that I had no place to go so - I moved in with my boyfriend."
Rory points to the door and says "in there". Rory reminds Chris he has met him once, at the vow renewal. That "he was the guy with the…". Chris says "right", when he walked in on them. Rory avoids his eye and says exactly. Chris still wants to go in.
Rory walks in, takes off her coat, and goes to Logan, who is sitting on the couch with his back to the door listening to music with headphones. Rory points to the door. Rory says she tried to call. Logan says hi, still a little uncomfortable. He whispers to Rory about giving warning next time.
Chris spots a photo of Endicott Peabody and asks if Logan was a Groton man. Logan says he was briefly, that he stole the photo. Chris says he was kicked out of Groton, which gets the two talking about various private schools. Logan shares all the schools he was kicked out of, including the story of a Miata on the bottom of a lake. Chris is quite taken with Logan and tells Rory she has a good man. Rory comments on the yardstick he’s using.
Chris asks Logan to go with them for dinner later. Rory asks Chris not to mention living with Logan to Lorelai, that she hasn’t mentioned it yet. It happened fast and she has plans to tell her today, but just to keep quiet. They head to the Rich Man’s Shoe for dinner. Chris ogles the XBox 360, in addition to the plasma tv, on their way out.
Luke is flipping through the multi-page to-do list that Lorelai and Michel made for him. An even 100 things to do. Michel loves lists and they bonded over it. Lorelai reminds Luke that a happy Michel is a happy Lorelai, and that she’ll give it right back to Luke in bed.
Silence at the family dinner. Luke is doing ok so far, but Lorelai is sure to bring up the shrimp from Al’s Pancake World upsetting her stomach. Emily asks if they are living together, and Luke says they are in the process of consolidating. Richard applauds them for being smart and remodeling to add more space. Richard reminds Lorelai to update her house insurance. Not updating coverage can lose you everything. Richard asks about the diner too, but Luke thinks he’s fine. Richard’s horror stories about insurance do unsettle him though. Richard points out that owning their own home and having a 26-Zagat rated Inn, and the diner & two buildings, make them a target for insurance fraud.
Richard & Emily says April could be a red flag too. That though she may not be a grifter, those around her could be. The timing is suspicious, with Luke about to marry Lorelai (a "woman of means"). Emily & Richard drill Luke as to authenticating the DNA test. They claim that they could be targets too, since Lorelai is their daughter and, come June 3rd, Luke their son-in-law. All four of them are in this together. Luke and Lorelai are stunned and concerned now.
Lorelai and Luke stagger out of the house in a daze about the booming real estate market, losing everything and con men. And about Sookie & Jackson also being at risk. They’re making plans to change everything when Lorelai comes to herself and says this is what Gilmores do - they get in your head and mess with it. Lorelai says they just need to cover their home and Luke’s diner (with the guy, in person).
They talk about April. Luke says, from the outside, it is suspicious. Lorelai says April’s 12 and not a grifter, but what about the mother? Luke says Anna is un-materialistic and his gut tells him there is nothing bad there. Lorelai trusts Luke’s gut too. Lorelai has the urge to yell at her parents and Luke is tight in the chest with anger and paralyzing weakness.
"You’ve been Gilmored!"
Lorelai points out that her parents referred to them as family. That in some twisted way, they may have been validating them as a couple. Luke remembers about them mentioning June 3rd, but Lorelai brushes it off as them having old information.
Chris exits the Rich Man’s Shoe and calls Lorelai. He just had dinner with Rory and feels he has to tell her something. He’s not sure if he should, whether it’s a fink-out or a parent thing, but decides to tell Lorelai that Rory moved in with Logan and that, in case Rory didn’t tell her, he would. Lorelai seems surprised and asks how it happened. Chris says it was spur-of-the-moment. Chris asks if they hate Logan or not, because he likes Logan and didn’t want to commit to that opinion if Lorelai felt otherwise. Lorelai has a "wow" moment about their little girl living with her boyfriend.
Lorelai’s phone beeps, Rory is on the other line. Lorelai tells Chris and he tells her to act surprised with Rory tells her the news. Lorelai agrees. Rory tells Lorelai she has two pieces of news - one good and one is… interesting. Lorelai is very excited about the first piece of news, about being editor. Rory tells Lorelai about Paris kicking her out and about moving in with Logan. Lorelai says it is "big news" then asks about the apartment - which is nice, top floor right off campus.
Rory is confused and puts the pieces together - that Chris told her. Rory say Lorelai didn’t call her Hester Prynne (from The Scarlet Letter) once. Lolelai tells Rory not to be mad, that Chris was doing the Dad thing.
Rory wants Lorelai’s opinion on living with Logan. Lorelai reminds her about the last time she gave opinions on Rory’s life choices. Rory wants to hear. Lorelai says moving in is pretty big and she doesn’t want Rory to do it for the wrong reasons, just because there’s a housing shortage. Rory says she loves Logan. Lorelai just wants Rory to be happy, so congratulates her on the big day. Lorelai says she’ll need tips from Rory before she lets Luke move in, then they move into chit chat about horror stories about toilet seats. Rory jokes about dimming the lights and starting the fire - wood burning - to which Lorelai jokes that they can’t be friends anymore.
