Gilmore Girls 6.17 "I’m OK, You’re OK"
Original Air Date: April 4, 2006 (Recap date: May 8, 2008)
Recap & Discussion

Discussion Questions:

  • Were you surprised to see Logan fighting so hard to get Rory back?
  • Did Rory agree to come home with him because Logan’s logic was sound? If so, do you think she still feels cheated on, emotionally?
  • Did Luke lie to Lorelai about April’s trip in order for her to say yes to him going? He made it sound like April just asked him then, but then confesses to researching the route the night before.
  • Why didn’t Lane move back to the apartment too?
  • Luke once said before that he enjoyed shopping with Lorelai, so why now does he make it sound horrible?
  • Did Rory come home to escape Logan?
  • Is Mrs. Kim open to Zack marrying Lane now? Was that because of how sad she saw Lane was?
  • Why is a hit song the requirement to marry Lane? Does Mrs. Kim think it impossible, or is she just motivating him?
  • Do Emily & Richard want to move to Stars Hollow?
  • Did Rory think Lorelai was talking in code about Rory not interfering with April?
  • Is Rory investigating Anna as "the other woman" because of her own issues with Logan "cheating"?
  • Why does Zack decide to write the song without taking any breaks? What’s the rush?
  • Why does Zack have Lane’s ring in his hand if Lane had been wearing it?
  • Did Zack write a "hit", or did Mrs. Kim satisfy herself that he was dedicated enough to marry Lane?
  • Why is Rory ignoring her phone? If everything is not "ok", why doesn’t she say so?
  • Has Rory made Lorelai more suspicious of Luke & Anna?
  • Why does Luke accept luggage from Anna and not from Lorelai?
  • Was Rory trying to hurt Logan? To what end? Why does she lie to him about why she didn’t tell him she was going away?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:

Paris and Rory are chowing down on all the Chinese food Paris had ordered prior to Rory just showing up. Paris suggests they paint the apartment, a new color scheme for a new era. Paris says she’s glad Rory is back; Rory apologizes for the whole editor thing. Paris realizes she’s not cut out to work with people, and is sorry for throwing Rory out.

Logan comes knocking at the door, and Paris greets him as "New Haven’s favorite whorehound." Paris does all the talking to Logan, despite his pleas to speak with Rory. Paris says to him all the things she’s always wanted to say; Rory nods along behind her. Logan bursts in and insists on talking. He’s not the only man to come back though - Doyle walks in, still wearing Rory’s coat.

Doyle knows he’s right for Paris, and thinks she knows it too. Rory takes Logan out into the hall to hear what he has to say. Logan is sorry she found out that way, but he feels like he was faithful to her. He’d never been before, but it was easy with her. He asked her to move in, and that too was easy. Rory reminds Logan of the bridesmaids, and he jumps in again with "we were broken up."

Rory says "you" were broken up, but Logan says "we" again. He thought that’s what the fight was, what the separation was. He says it with honesty and asks if she believes him. Rory says "I guess." So, by logic, she should realize he didn’t believe he was cheating on her. With resignation, Rory says "I guess" again. Logan asks Rory to come home with her, to forget that day ever happened. He suggests a pro/con list. Rory says she’ll have to tell Paris she’s going, but sees quite clearly that Paris & Doyle have made up and are not in a position to talk.

Rory walks by Logan to leave. He grabs her hand and asks if they are ok. Rory says yes, but she looks away and still looks sad. Logan puts his arm around her and they go home.

Lorelai had been screaming because of a spider in the shower - she’s trapped it, but needs Luke to get it out. Luke finds out that the spider has a posse, so takes a roasting pan in to trap them all and safely transport them out of the building.

April’s math team has made it into some National contest and she’ll be going to Philadelphia next week. Anna was supposed to be a chaperone, but can’t, so April called him. Luke says it’s the first time April has called him to do things. Luke says he can’t just take a week off the diner, and he assumes he has plans with Lorelai (a searching question). She says they have no plans and he should go. Luke says it sounds like a great trip - he’d already researched the route. He then takes the spiders outside, preferably to be near a talking pig.

Lane, Zack and Brian are re-setting up their apartment. Lane is still living at home, so her old room is now set up for band practice. Brian asks what happens when Zack and Lane get married (aside from sex) - he just moved back, after all. Zack and Lane are stumped by the question but Zack decides Brian can stay. Lane hints maybe they’d want their own place. Zack is heading over to talk with Mrs. Kim today.

Lorelai comes to the diner to ask Luke to dispose of a cricket she has inventively trapped under a secured paper cup. Luke is mending his duffel bag - Lorelai suggests he throw it away. Luke insists he doesn’t need a new bag, even if Lorelai shops for it on her own. Pricking his finger over and over is less painful, apparently.

Lane runs outside to see Rory to share her "really, really big news." Lane shows Rory her ring, and it doesn’t kick in right away. Rory thinks Shriner first. But then we see them screaming and jumping up and down outside. They come inside and Lane shows Lorelai her ring - not a Superbowl ring, she’s engaged! Lane thought Lorelai knew, but Luke forgot to tell her.

Rory came home for a couple of days on a whim. She wanted a Stars Hollow fix. Lorelai asks if she’s ok, after last night. Rory has to fill in on Logan explaining everything and her moving back in with him. She says they’re fine. Rory says the bridesmaids were a misunderstanding.

Rory is at the Inn doing some work for the Yale Daily News, helping herself to some Post-Its from behind the counter. It annoys Michel, who has color-coded Post-It notes and the pink ones are now out of balance with the green ones, creating an allusion that more people have checked in than out. Lorelai walks in to find Rory and Michel in a face-off.

Emily calls Lorelai on the speaker phone from the car - they are lost because the GPS system is speaking German. They have to pull over. Lorelai fills Rory in:

"there’s a fight to the death between Richard and Emily and an evil German supercomputer."

Lorelai then puts her parents on speaker phone so Rory can hear. Emily is ranting about the car controlling their lives. Lorelai interrupts to give them proper directions and to joke that "next time" they should call for directions, they could have stopped by Stars Hollow (which is near where they’re going). Lorelai walked into that one - Emily says they still can. Lorelai tries to back out, but it’s all set now for Richard & Emily to visit. And they’re thrilled Rory is there, whom Lorelai brought up as an excuse to get out of the visit.

Zack is in Mrs. Kim’s store, building up his courage to go talk to her. Zack comes right out and tells her that he wants to marry Lane. Mrs. Kim seems off put, but Zack says how much he loves Lane and even comes prepared with a letter of recommendation, says he’s in line for a promotion that comes with health benefits. Zack also has his latest bank statement for Mrs. Kim to review.

Mrs. Kim asks Zack about his music, if he feels that’s his true calling. Zack insists the music doesn’t interfere with his day job, but Mrs. Kim wants to hear his demo tape. Mrs. Kim says that if music is what Zack wants to do with his life, she needs to know if he can provide for Lane that way. Zack lies and says he hasn’t mentioned marriage to Lane yet, which Mrs. Kim says is good - not to get her hopes up.

Rory and Lorelai are quickly cleaning up the house, hiding anything controversial or welcoming. Sookie comes by with food - unfortunately, all of Lorelai’s faves like taquitos and mac & cheese. Sookie didn’t know about Emily & Richard coming, and thought Lorelai was having cravings - like, pregnancy cravings. Sookie seems disappointed.

They rename the food to make it seem more sophisticated. Rory has made the house colder too, so her grandparents will leave faster. The Jaguar is there, but where are Emily & Richard? They had been looking around the property for a few minutes. Emily walks in and notices the living room renovation - Lorelai brushes it off as just a few nips and tucks.

Paul Anka runs in to help himself to a doggy treat from his own little cabinet. Lorelai says she got the dog yesterday. Emily is critical of some of the renovations, and goes to investigate on her own faster than they notice her gone. Unfortunately, the bath tub is where Rory hid all the stuff from around the house.

Mrs. Kim is listening to Zack’s mix tape, making some notes. She has listened to the songs many times. Some things are catchy, but there’s no "hit" yet. Zack has to write a "hit" before Mrs. Kim will let him marry Lane.

Richard likes the "Pasta a la Sookie". Rory’s cell phone rings, but she turns it off. Emily comments on how different the house is, inside and out. Like a whole new house. Emily feels like she wasn’t involved and is upset at not being invited over after the renovations were done. Luke comes to the door, but Lorelai whispers that her parents are there and he turns tail.

Emily returns to the topic of the house, saying she assumes that it means Luke and Lorelai will keep calling Stars Hollow their home. Emily goes so far as to say the house is "homey" and has a charm - she can see Luke & Lorelai there. More than three hours after it all started, Emily & Richard go home.

Rory and Lorelai plan to go to a movie before grabbing a second pizza dinner. Rory notices Lorelai’s research for Luke’s new luggage and the talk of April’s trip makes Rory ask if Lorelai has met April yet. Lorelai says not officially, and she doesn’t know much about Anna either. Rory thinks they should go check out Anna’s store. Lorelai says it’s Luke’s thing and she is staying out of it.

They next day, Lorelai is still ranting about the improbabilities of Final Destination 3 and thinks it should be renamed Now you’re really, really, really dead!. Zack can be seen sitting at the gazebo trying to write his "hit."

Rory has ignored Lorelai’s request and has sought out Anna’s store. It’s a cute store with clothes and things for the home. Rory notices, without wantint to, that everything in the store is really cute. Anna tells her she tries to stock mostly one-of-a-kind goods. Anna is also nicely honest with another shopper when she has tried on something that doesn’t suit her.

Kirk, who is now in real estate and is referring to himself in the third person, has set up "office" in the Dragonfly. He even has client meetings set up there. Lorelai kicks him out, but Kirk expected a lot more of Lorelai, "considering what [he's] doing for her parents." Lorelai’s radar is up. Emily & Richard are looking for a place in Stars Hollow. They’ve had a view showings and have another one tomorrow. Lorelai buries her face in her hands.

Rory comes in ranting about Bugsy Malone and hot dogs and wondering where Florrie Dugger went to. Lorelai says she probably "moved to Stars Hollow and her mother harped on her hairstyle so much she jumped off a bridge." Lorelai says the Gilmores are moving in. Lorelai figures because her parents want to be close if she and Luke have kids.

"I don’t know what to do. I moved thirty miles away from my parents for a reason! Those thirty miles act as a buffer, so that when my mother says something that makes me want to kill her, I have to drive thirty miles to do it! Ten miles in, I usually calm down or I get hungry or I pass a mall! Something prevents me from actually killing her. That buffer is my mother’s best friend. Take the buffer away and you got Nancy Grace camping out on Miss Patty’s lawn for a month."

Rory hands Lorelai a present. It’s the stewardess bag that Rory was admiring from Anna’s store. Rory tells her, very proudly, that it’s from Anna Nardini’s store. Lorelai didn’t want Rory to go there - she is staying out of it because Luke asked her to. Lorelai wants to trust Luke to deal with it. Lorelai is sarcastic in referencing how trustworthy he’s been in regards to April. Rory is upset that Lorelai doesn’t want to know about April or Anna and can’t seem to understand that Lorelai doesn’t even want to know if Anna is pretty. Lorelai has to yell at Rory to stop talking.

Zack is playing and singing for Mrs. Kim. Mrs. Kim says it’s close, but the last part needs work. Zack whines, he’s been working on the song for 20 hours straight. Mrs. Kim won’t let him give up. Mrs. Kim walks him through changing a chord in the song and Zack is surprised that she’s right. Now it’s a hit! Zack is thrilled that "they" wrote a hit song - he enjoyed working with Mrs. Kim and wants her to listen to more of his songs.

Mrs. Kim brings Zack inside and asks Lane to come down. Mrs. Kim encourages Zack to say something "important" to Lane. Zack starts going on about the song, but Mrs. Kim pulls out a small stool and suggests something else to say to Lane… to ask her. Zack asks Lane to marry him, and she says yes again. Zack is about to put the ring back on Lane’s finger, but Mrs. Kim has a ring that belonged to her grandmother. She slips it onto Lane’s finger. Mrs. Kim says they are officially engaged and leaves them alone to discuss it all for 15 minutes. Zack plays Lane the new song.

Rory and Lorelai have come back from another tortuous movie night watching Final Destination 3 again and need food. When Rory’s phone rings again, she ignores it. Lorelai notices a new bag next to the stack of donuts - a bag Luke just got. Lorelai thinks she wore him down, but Rory notices the bag is from Anna’s store.

Lorelai goes up to see Luke, who is arguing with a vendor. Lorelai awkwardly says hi to Luke, then "casually" makes mention of the new bag. Luke says that Anna sent it over, as if it’s no big deal. Luke had been talking with Anna about his trip and his duffel bag came up, so Anna sent him that one. Lorelai says it’s nice, but she could have shopped for him. Luke says "it’s here," like it’s no big deal. Luke, rightly so, asks if it bothers Lorelai. She says it’s ok.

In a scene much like the earlier one when Rory showed up for the weekend, Lorelai says that Luke explained it all and that they’re "fine." Both girls are "fine", but don’t look it.

Rory shows back up to Logan’s apartment, where he asks her where she’s been. Casually, Rory mentions she went to Stars Hollow. Rory says she "should’ve" left a note or called. Rory lies and says her cell phone died. Logan had checked in with the paper, and they had been emailing all weekend with Rory, so he knew she was ok.

After talking a mile a minute, Rory excuses herself to go take a shower. Logan asks her if everything is ok. She says it’s "fine."Logan does not look like he believes her.

God, I just love Lorelai/Lauren’s reaction when Kirk tells her he is going to use one of the Dragonfly’s rooms to have sex with an old lady.

Rory still feels cheated on by Logan, you could see it in her face. I don’t know why she moves back in with him, even though she still feels hurt and doesn’t really trust him. Maybe she went home either to visit Lorelai or to get away from Logan. As I have said before, I despise Logan. Emily and Richard don’t want to move to Stars Hollow. In 6:20 “Driving Miss Emily” it becomes evident that Emily and Richard were buying a house for Luke and Lorelai. By then, Lorelai knows that there isn’t going to be a wedding and starts crying in the real estate office. This is an unbelievably sad moment and makes me teary. Why would Emily and Richard look for a house to buy Luke and Lorelai if 1. the town is small as it is so it wouldn’t really make a difference where you lived and 2. Luke and Lorelai just finished remodeling Lorelai’s house. Emily and Richard know of this so why continue looking for a house? This episode was indeed a very curious one. One more question: Will ABCFamily be showing Season 7?

  3. jess says:

well, as i was just watching the re-run, i noticed zack’s “hit” song. I like it so much. Does anyone know if it is a real song?
