Alexis Bledel on Recycling and Gilmore Girls Movie

by Arieanna on August 1st, 2008

Alexis Bledel talked to Do Something on the red carpet for the premiere of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 about a great campaign the movie is doing for charity.

Warner Brothers has paired with Cotton Inc & Guess to work with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. In line with the film, they are recycling jeans and making them into tubes for insulation. The recycled jeans will be a part of the houses being re-build now in New Orleans.

Alexis also described what the word "sisterhood" means to her. Alexis says the experience of shooting the films has been that for her.

And, on the ultimate question of whether there will be a Gilmore Girls movie, this is what Alexis says:

"I don’t know. So many people have asked me about that but I haven’t heard anything."

wow, Alexis looks great. I’ve been wondering what she’s been doing besides the couple of movies she working on… i rarely hear anything about her…I wonder is she’s dating anyone… i saw some previews for the ABC Family special for the Sisterhood 1 where they have all the ladies and Alexis is so quiet, almost to the point of looking sad or melancholic, she is so different from the Rory of seasons 2 and 3, season 3 probably being my favorite season of all time!!

I Doubt if their ever Will Be a Gilmore Girl Movie Cause Of Alexis. I Really Think she does’nt want to go back to be Rory Gilmore cause she hated it. So don’t give up your hopes for a GG Movie cause it will never happen thanks to Alexis. I doubt if she even liked her CO-Stars. She was Pretending to be nice. Also why Does she Look so Skinny For. I Like Her In all But I doubt their will ever be a Tv Movie & If their is. It Should be set 5 yrs later with Lorelai & Luke with a 4 yr old kid Named Grace

I agree Jeremy. If so many people have been asking her and she knows a lot of fans want to know, I don’t see why she hasn’t tried to get an answer or more details. I think it’s because she really isn’t interested. oh well.

Does anyone now if AB’s going to attend the Teens Choice Awards. Well “hopefully” she will. To think that during SOTP 1, all the cast attended the Kids Choice Awards though its only Amber who’s a presentor…

She’s Became a Spoiled Brat with a ego of the size of Kayne West. They Cast Someone else as Rory. Someone with Blue Eyes & Better then Alexis

  • Rob (ShutUpRob)
    Aug 3, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I’ve got to agree with Jeremy that it’s not going to happen until she agrees to do it. However, I do NOT think the comparison with Kanye West is a valid comparison regarding either Bledel or West. IMO even though he’s outspoken, West is not a brat and Bledel is too Rory (introverted, possibly passive-aggressive) to regard as a brat.

Lorelai and Lauren are brats, though. [vbeg!]

IMO, Bledel seems to be blatantly, baldly trying to dodge the question by saying and consequently misleading, “I don’t know. So many people have asked me about that but I haven’t heard anything.”

Since Amy *wants* to do a movie (and I say that in the present tense), I find Bledel’s statement that she hasn’t heard anything to be entirely not credible. Umm, especially since Michael Ausiello asked her about it right after Amy brought the subject up at the Fox TCA party a year ago and Bledel responded with (paraphrase) an “It depends on the script.”

So technically speaking, she’s heard about it, even if she hasn’t been directly approached by the studio. Moreover, pretty much everybody would have a hard time convincing me that Amy (or even Lauren) hasn’t already approached her unofficially. But OTOH, there’s that unofficial thing — can’t talk about it on the record.

    Und zo . . .

. . . if she wants to say some version of I haven’t heard anything *** recently. *** (my emphasis), then that’s a different story entirely and if that’s what she really meant, then her manager and/or publicist needs to give her a kick in the butt about being more precise — and frankly, more conciliatory toward the Gg audience regarding her virtually unilaterally ending the series in the first place.

Even if she is interested in doing the movie, even if she wants to project that she’s interested in doing the movie — as the person among the entire cast most disinterested in talking about the show, she projects the exact opposite of interest in the movie.

If she really is interested in doing the movie, then she needs to change tactics — quick! — as she projects the exact opposite of interest in the movie.

    — Rob

PS: Personally, rather than a movie — which would have to be either a TV-movie or a direct-to-DVD movie as a theatrical movie for a TV show is delusional for anything that isn’t a Trek or SatC-level phenomenon — I’d like to see a 6-to-13-episode miniseries.

Based on everything that was left dangling in the most recent season finale (as opposed to series finale, which it is not), the general direction of most of the storylines — except for Rory’s and Kirk’s — are quite clear. But even the unclearness of the next step in Rory’s storyline was paradoxically the clear next step in Rory’s storyline — she was going to have to come to grips with the inexplicability of her choices (and in that way, I’d almost say that Bledel is still method-acting Rory. BID.)

Anyway, IMO, a Gilmore reunion should be a miniseries, not a movie, but, of course, I’ll take what I can get as long as it’s an actual series finale rather than the mid-chapter stop that the series has been saddled with since May 2007.

They Can Always Get Mandy Moore To play Rory or Ashley Tisdale. All Tisdale has to is dye her hair Brown & their she is Rory Gilmore since Ashley has Blue Eyes.

  • niles
    Aug 3, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Oh please Ashley is just fug while Mandy is soo big!
She was even bigger & looks older than Lauren Graham (via Becoz I Said So). It would be that credible if they play mother & daugther and Alexis would always be Rory In GG. She’s not that “dispensable” on that show. IMO…

    She was MISQUOTED!

    Here’s the “real deal”…

As for talk about a movie, I have not heard anything. I think it would be amazing and a lot of fun to do. And of course, if I heard any news of a movie, I would sign on and love to do it!

All they have to do is find an actress that can act. Sorry but Alexis isn’t too good and if you put someone in the role that can give it justice, people won’t have anything to complain about. Except superficial things.

  • Rob (ShutUpRob)

FWIW, recasting an adult character with a different actor does NOT work on primetime shows, whether dramas or sitcoms. Most Infamous Case in point: The Darrens on Bewitched. Even in one of the few primetime cases of recasting a part that actually worked — Becky on Roseanne — the insider-politics of the situation of the original Becky (Lacy Goranson) returning only drew attention to the fact that the second Becky (Scrubs’s Sarah Chalke) was and is a much better actress than the person who originated the role. And that the cast and crew all knew it. The sole problem: Roseanne’s letting her understandable loyalty to Goranson trump what was good for the show.

As much as I dislike how Gg’s indefinite hiatus (grin!) was handled, I think it would be extremely difficult to recast the role of Rory even though she IMO isn’t even close to being as iconic a character as Lorelai, Emily or even Paris.

And let’s assume for the sake of argument that either Amy or LG would even be the slightest bit interested in allowing another actress to take on the role of Rory. You’ve not only got to find someone who can carry off Rory’s temperament and personality — you’ve got to find someone who has great familial chemistry with Graham, Bishop and Herrmann and great friendship chemistry with Weil, Agena and the rest of the cast.

That’s not easy to do and that’s why every single time a random Brady kid has opted out of a reunion movie or series featuring the original Brady Bunch cast, the replacement has stuck out like a sore thumb — A Very Brady Christmas, with the different Marcia, for one. And that was for a show that wasn’t really very good to begin with.

That said, I’d probably recast the role of Rory with actress Alexandra Breckenridge. You know, she played Willa, the ersatz Rory-gone-tabloid on FX’s ‘Dirt.’ Knows banter, has great comedic timing (she had a great cameo in the first season finale of Psych). And I think that the fact that she’s from Connecticut would help, too.

I’ve never read such a load of rubbish on this forum. I would suggest that maybe some people get a life and accept that GG has finished. Whether Amy is thinking of a movie or not, Alexis has obviously not been approached and until she is, there is definitely no GG movie in the pipeline.

I would also suggest that you stop making nasty, unsupported comments about Alexis too. Both personally and professionally. GG finished because the studios couldn’t make a shorter season work, not because Alexis wouldn’t do it. And for the record, both Alexis and Lauren agreed and supported each other over GG’s future or demise.

As Alexis is still in contact with Lauren and dated Milo for 4 years, I doubt very much that she ‘pretended’ to like her co-stars or pretended to be nice. What horrible things to say.

Finally, replace Alexis as Rory? That says it all about some of the above posts. That will never, ever happen. Alexis is Rory.

“As for talk about a movie, I have not heard anything. I think it would be amazing and a lot of fun to do. And of course, if I heard any news of a movie, I would sign on and love to do it!”

    ————-

Lark, while the full quote is appreciated, it fundamentally changes nothing about what I wrote. Still the same dodge and evasiveness — a little more nicely put (and IMO, anyone quoting any person, much less a celebrity, has the responsibility to reflect in his/her quotage the tone of the person who is being quoted), but ultimately with the same amount of disingenuousness.

    ————-

Sara: a lot of Gg fans want to see the show have a real ending. You might simply be sick of hearing about it, you may be one of those Gg fans who is so bitter about season 6 or season 7 or both that you don’t even want to contemplate the possibility of anyone finishing it up — I’ve run into more than a few fans who are excessively bitter about seasons 6 and 7 of BOTH Gilmore Girls and Buffy. (That’s an interesting phenomenon in and of itself, BID.)

But the simple fact of the matter is that Bledel is not being truthful when she said that she “[has] not heard anything about the movie.”

Okay, sure, it depends on what the definition of “heard” is. (”Amber Heard” is probably not one of those definitions, BID.) But to reiterate: Amy Sherman-Palladino has stated publicly to then-TV-Guide columnist Michael Ausiello at Fox’s Upfronts shindig that she wants to do a movie and Ausiello proceeded to interview the main cast *including* Bledel to get their reactions.

Less than a month later, in mid-June of 2007, Lauren Graham stated publicly in regards to Amy’s comment that they were going to have some (my description) off-the-record talks when Graham moved to New York City shortly thereafter. (This is vis-a-vis an online chat that Graham had in June 2007 at GoldDerby.com)

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to derive several things specifically about Bledel from her recent statement when contrasted even with just how Amy decided to get the ball rolling back in May 2007.

    1) Bledel *has* heard about the intent/interest in doing a Gilmore movie.

    2) She’s otherwise giving what is known as a classic non-answer of I don’t know, I haven’t heard anything, it would be fun to do.

It really should go without saying that when one parses the statements of an actor about the progress of reviving a television series she was on, particularly when said actor is promoting a totally unrelated movie, that she’s not going to say anything more than “I haven’t heard anything” simply in an effort to move on to talking about the movie that she’s contractually obligated to promote.

On the other hand, that didn’t stop Graham, who was no longer under contract to the show, who was starting her promotion junkets for Evan Almighty, from actively soliciting from the fans at the GoldDerby chat what they’d like to see in a Gilmore movie.

By contrasting Bledel’s reaction to Graham’s reaction, the most generous interpretation of Bledel’s response is that she just doesn’t want to talk about it.

NOTE: In Hollywoodspeak “I’d love to do it” means the exact opposite of what it says — or have you never seen Entourage? ;) You never say that you’d love to do something when you would actually love to do something because that tells the studios that they can get contractual concessions (often pay concessions) out of you. So again, the most generous interpretation of Bledel’s statement would be that she doesn’t want to talk about it, but IMO, the most likely interpretation of her statement is that she’s not particularly interested in doing it.

Contrast Bledel’s statment with Kelly Bishop’s recent participation in the skit that opened Michael Ausiello’s first video blog installment at Entertainment Weekly, playing a reporter who was asking Ausiello what the Fabled Final Four Words of the show were.

Also contrast Bledel’s current statement with reactions from several other cast members: Patterson had already signed up for Season 8 and expressed huge disappointment at the way the show ended to Michael Ausiello. Liza Weil, Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop all expressed emotions ranging from disappointment to, in Bishop’s case, outright anger at the way the show ended, calling it disrespectful to the fans. Graham essentially (and almost categorically) retracted her initial “It was time” statments that she made in interviews with Michael Ausiello and Ellen Degeneres at the start of May 2007 in her interviews just a month later to Jay Leno and GoldDerby.com, even admitting to the GoldDerby crowd that she felt that the seventh season finale did not work as a series finale.

Contrast that with Bledel. Zip, nothing, nada specific about the way the show ended, about whether or not she wants to do a reunion movie, etc. Instead, at every opportunity, she evades going into any real depth about the subject of Gilmore Girls with a variety of textbook Hollywood evasions of the subject.

Of course, I recognize that she’s in a damned-if-she-does-damned-if-she-doesn’t situation. I mean, given that she’s on the road promoting Sisterhood 2, it’s understandable that an actor wouldn’t want to talk about another project, defunct or not, when she’s promoting a current one. But Bledel’s reactions stand out like a sore thumb when pretty much everyone else in the cast of Gg (okay, except Milo, too) loves to talk about the show at length. At least Melissa McCarthy had the honesty to say, when she was joining Samantha Who months before Gg went on indefinite hiatus that she was just ready to do another show, whether Gg was renewed or not.

Honesty goes a long way, evasiveness doesn’t even take you in any direction.

I would love them to do a GG reunion and even though AB is being hard to get to I still think that she should play Rory. It would not be the same if it was not her. She is Rory and it would just be stupid if they tryed to get another Rory. and I realy don’t want Ashey Tisdale to play Rory she is soooo stupid.

If not movie was made I would be satisfied with a book from the original creator with her intended ending (that is after she left, not the ending stemming from the last two seasons.. which makes me shed a little tear!)

For this show.. no one can be re-cast as actors ARE the characters! I would be disappointed if the original cast was not there and rather have it not continue!

Thanks for keeps things updated!! ^_^

  • Ryan
    Aug 26, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I actually heard Lauren Graham didn’t like the rest of her castmates not Bledel which makes a little more sense I think. Though probably neither speculation is true. Here’s my take: seven years is a long time for any actor to be doing the same thing. All the actors have other options so why wouldn’t they focus more on those and not on the past (including Bledel). And further: season seven was boring and irritating to watch and I’m sure it was boring and irritating to film as well. What’s the incentive to make a movie?

I REALLY WANT TO SEE A GILMORE GIRLS MOVIE!!
After watching the show for the entire seven seasons, I missed the last two episodes due to work conflicts! and still have not seen them. I know I have to get the DVD series but a movie
for all us die-hard Gilmore Girls fans would be awesome!!

i want only the movie. I think for once, that Alexis would do only the movie and I love the idea, because a special show, deserves a special ending, and a movie is very special. Besides, I only want time for the wedding and twins of R&L. They shouldn’t have time to mess the show up again and put drama in it like Lorelai is back together with Jason or Chris. Chris should be in the movie but he should be happy for Lor and Luki and they should only be friends. Rory needs still her Dad in her life and all Rorys boyfriends should be on the wedding, but she should only marry one and stay with the others friends. The Gilmores (aka Emily and Richard) should be happy for Lor and Luki and should keep in touch with them and they should be happy for them and they should forget all the trouble from the past. All Stars Hollow members should be on the double wedding and I wanna see them like we know them. crazy… lol. That’s perfect for a movie. I don’t want drama. I want a boring, everything is perfect, happy ending:-). A double wedding and double twins happy ending. Only the movie please. I don’t want that they mess it up again like season 7!!!

I rode some more post’s and totally aree with you guys. We only can hoe for the movie because that’t the most we can get and I love the idea. It’s enough for a happy ending and it could be the most possible thing, that Alexis will do it. I heard something of a book. I think, if the movie doesn’t happens, that that would be awesome. Amys Gilmore Girlks ending written in a book. That’s fantastic and better than nothing. Of course the movie is better but the boook is better that nothing. The movie with other actors? If the actors really never, never, never want to do it, than it would be o…k…a…y… too. She should do then the book and the movie with other actors to visualize it. But don’t get me wrong guys, I want the real actors back that would be only better than nothing! The beswt would be when they finally do the movie next year with THE REAL ACTORS, A VERY HAPPY ENDING PLEASE!
