Samantha Who? 2.03 “The Pill”

In this episode, Samantha (Christina Applegate) becomes a part of a clinical trial to recover her memories while Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) tries to prove she can pick up a woman hotter than Dena (Melissa McCarthy), after the pair were mistaken for a couple.

Samantha Who? Highlights:

• Samantha’s neurologist Dr. Andy (Tony Hale) calls her in for an urgent meeting - but for good news for his ‘favorite patient’, to be part of a clinical trial about recovering lost memories
• Dena would cut off and re-attach her foot for medical science - if paid $13,500!
• Sam’s first recovered memory is of making a little boy cry, and they continue to be bad after that
• A cute guy admires Dena’s dogs, so Andrea tries to pretend they’re hers. The guy then thinks Dena & Andrea are a couple.
• Sam apologizes to Frank (Tim Russ), remembering how mean she was to him before
• Todd (Barry Watson) is still looking for an apartment, though he doesn’t seem like he’s in much of a rush

• Samantha seems overwhelmed with all the new memories (including her accident), so heads home to her mommy (Regina, Jean Smart)
• Regina sneaks a pill so she can remember her 20s!
• Todd found his own apartment! After hearing this, Sam is flooded with memories of how she’d treated Todd before. And how upset she always was when he blew her off!
• Question: was Samantha with Todd because he wanted to reject her, as a kind of conquest or assertion of control, or did she like him truly?
• Dena flirts with Andrea, to annoy her, but Andrea admits she doesn’t care if people think that she’s gay. She only cares that people think she’s with Dena. Poor Dena!
• Andrea: “Hey, I can get anyone I want. I’m the hottest lesbian-that’s-not-a-lesbian in the world!”
• Dr. Andy calls to tell Sam to stop taking the drugs - the clinical trial was suspended. Wonder why? He also tries to ask Sam out.
• Sam is excitedly throwing out the pills when she remembers a good memory, an engagement ring, but not the full thing! She frantically reaches for the last pill before it washes away, but is too late
• Sam begs Dr. Andy for one more pill, and he admits to her that all the memories she recovers will disappear once off the drugs. Hugging Dr. Andy brings back memories of learning to hug with Todd, and how good that felt.
• Andrea tries to hit on the hot lesbian at the office, but makes it about her, which annoys the girl. Techniques to get guys don’t work for girls! Instead, Dena finds common ground with the woman. Score one for Dena!
• Sam remembers when Todd moved into her place - and remembers smiling while watching him sleep. Then Sam remembers Todd’s proposal!
• Todd asking for more freaked Sam out - she’d never lived with a guy, was marriage too much? Todd stormed out.
• Sam wants to remember her memory of this, to know that Todd proposed and that she was the one who was scared and pushed him away
• As she rushes back to Todd, Sam remembers Todd breaking up with her. And how she was crying, on her phone, when she was hit by a truck….
• Sam rushes in to tell Todd she’s sorry, but can’t remember what for! Good thing she left herself a message, that Todd deleted without listening to. Oh boo!
• Andrea continues to try to hook herself the lesbian secretary, but instead bought herself a meeting with HR for harassment! Carol, the secretary, promised to drop it for Dena’s sake (because she likes Dena)
• Dena tells Andrea that Carol doesn’t like her because of who she is - what she looks like doesn’t matter (because she’s ugly on the inside). A reminder of how Andrea was judgmental of Dena, and how much nicer Dena is. Except Andrea only hears the flattery.
• Todd’s apartment deal fell through, but now Sam is inviting him to stay longer. Reading her notes, she thinks she did a lot of bad things to Todd before and wants to make up for it.
• We see that Todd’s engagement ring is still hidden on the bookshelf - perhaps until the time is right?!
