Do You Love Snow?
March 2, 2009 by Arieanna
I can’t watch ‘Women Of Questionable Morals‘ without thinking of what a cultural phenomenon Gilmore Girls made out of snow. Lorelai just loves snow and, like her tradition on Rory’s birthday, I’m sure it’s changed the way many people react to snow.
In the first season, we learned that Lorelai was in love with snow, particularly the first snowfall. She would make a wish with the first snow. Lorelai explained:
“When I was five, I had a really bad ear infection, and I had been home in bed for a week. And I was very sad. So I wished really hard that something wonderful would happen to me. And I woke up the next morning… and it had snowed. And I was sure some fairy godmother had done it just for me. It was my little present.”
Snow was Lorelai’s present , the best things happened to her when it snowed, and each year she is filled with joy at the first snowfall. In Season 5, that’s still the case…
“Flakes, flurries, swirls, crystals, whatever form it comes in. I’ll take it. We go back, snow and me. We have a beautiful history.”
Until it’s not…
When the Inn loses reservations, snow ploughs blockade the drive and Lorelai has to go without coffee, things just go downhill. Lorelai thinks maybe she was “too clingy” with snow and has lost favor with it. When a branch falls onto her Jeep, Lorelai says it just gets personal.
“Snow is nothing but annoying icy frozen water stuff that falls out
of the sky at inconvenient times. It’s Mother Nature’s icy ‘Screw you,
Lorelai Gilmore’”
Here’s the Lorelai-hates-snow scene:
Luke was privy to this rant and he obviously felt bad. He was no lover of snow but Lorelai always had been. Remembering that Lorelai loves ice skating, Luke surprises her with her own ice skating rink! Right in her front yard! As Luke explains, “I’m grumpy about stuff but I don’t want you to be.” So sweet!

Anyway, the point of all of this was to ask – do you love snow? And did the way you look at snow change after Gilmore Girls?

I do Love snow, but I didn’t love driving to work in it this morning. 8-10″ this morning in Connecticut.
I love it much more when I can stay home, sit in front of the fireplace and watch it from the inside.
I’ve always loved snow, ever since I’m a little girl. That’s my favourite weather to go running or mountain biking.
But I have to say that I’ve never given that much thought to snow. Now, everytime I see snow I think about Lorelai and my favourite TV show. Not that it changed my vision of snow, it’s just that now it is associated to the best TV show ever, the only one that can make of snow another character!
I would like to add a moment to the list you established: when Lorelais posts the character reference letter for Luke (Santa’s Secret Stuff, 7×11) it starts to snow. We can see it as a sign that she’s doing the right thing and that something good will come out of this.
After all, Luke coming to Lorelai enabled them to clear – a little – the air between them. From then, they went on the path of redemption…
I can’t totally realate to Lorelai’s feelings about snow. I’ve loved it since I was a kid to, I think it’s totally magical like Lorelai says. This is a great post considering we just got about 6 inches of snow where I live.
I love it when it snow on Gilmore Girls, it always brings good things to come. And that scene where Luke makes Lorelai and Ice rink so cute.
I really love the scenes with Lorelai when the first snow comes. I used to really love snow, too, but it never really brought any magical moments that I can recall. I always just thought that it was so pretty. I think that it is still pretty as long as I or my family don’t have to be out driving in it. It seems the older I get the more like Lorelai in the one scene where she hates snow I become.
I love snow, well, that is if I’m indoors watching it fall from the inside and not driving in it. I swear that when there is a good snowfall, everything gets quieter. That may sounds strange, but I love to go outside, close my eyes and take it all in. Although, I’ll admit right about now I’m ready to kiss snow and single digit temperatures good bye and welcome in spring.
I love snow! I think it makes the world look beautiful! I’d love to live somewhere where it snowed regularly everywhere and not just in the mountains! Winter shouldn’t be winter without snow! XD
