Did Lorelai Steal Luke’s Thunder?
March 26, 2009 by Arieanna
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but was Kirk right? In the Season 6 premiere of Gilmore Girls, ‘The New and Improved Lorelai Gilmore‘, Miss Patty and Babette start off bombarding Luke with questions about how he proposed to Lorelai and he seemed uncomfortable telling them that Lorelai proposed to him. Later, when Kirk comes into the store to sell Luke a ring for Lorelai, he goes on about how disappointed Luke must be.

Kirk thinks that Lorelai stole his thunder, which she potentially did, but I’m not sure Luke would have cared if other people didn’t keep seeming disappointed on his behalf. Kirk continues, saying it must be embarrassing and upsetting for Luke:
“Now you’ll never have that moment. You won’t get to be the romantic one, to sweep her off her feet.”
Now, that may resonate with Luke. Remember their first date? That was a sweep-you-off-your-feet moment. In Luke fashion. Luke now seems determined to have his moment, but do you think this really shook him? Why and how? Read more
Kirk is Twittering
Everyone’s favorite Stars Hollow townie is now on Twitter! Ok, it’s not *really* Kirk, just someone pretending to be him, but still fun. I imagine most of you have questions at this point, so let me begin…
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking site. Kind of like Facebook status updates, but on overdrive. Each user has 140 characters to post messages (”tweets”) about what he/she is doing. And other users can “friend” you and reply to your messages. Just like Kirk did for me!
@arieanna Canada! It is great to meet people from outside Stars Hollow. My mother never lets me leave Connecticut
Follow Kirk
When you “friend” someone on Twitter, you are said to “follow” them. So, once you’re signed up, here is where you can find Kirk:
http://twitter.com/starshollowkirk
What Kirk Twitters
Hopefully the person behind this Twitter account keeps up the pretense, because it’s already been extremely fun for me! Some of the messages fake-Kirk have twittered are:
Another lovely morning in Stars Hollow. Taylor is trying to get Luke to put up harvest decorations again. I hope he puts up the turkey. [link]
Almost time for my shift at the Stars Hollow Beauty Shoppe. Taylor makes us spell it that way. Free makeovers for all! [link]
The status messages seem to give us the impression that time has not moved in Stars Hollow, but that Kirk is exactly where we left him. I wonder if the author behind this will pick up and evolve the “story” further?
Thanks to Crosby for the tip!

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Kim’s Antiuqes is "Closed for Wedding" and Mrs. Kim happily oversees a kitchen full of Korean women making kimchi, soon to be making dumplings. Lane comes down and is swarmed by her nosy relatives - but sent back upstairs to her hot kimchi-smelling room so the cooking is done on time.
Lorelai comes by with Lane’s wedding dress. Mrs. Kim gets a call and comes out rather distracted. Lorelai pulls out the dress for her, and tells her she made some modifications due to stains, but tried to keep the integrity of the dress. Though it is a whole new dress, essentially (Lane has a huge smile for this), Mrs. Kim doesn’t even notice. Lorelai tells Lane to hide the dress so Mrs. Kim doesn’t notice it has a waist until it’s too late.

- Is Rory weak in character for loving Logan? For not leaving him, despite her pain?
- Why does Lorelai destroy the dress, in the end?
Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Lorelai calls Rory with details of her weird dream. In her dream, she takes Paul Anka for a walk. Not the dog Paul Anka, the real Paul Anka. Dog Paul Anka runs away to Doose’s, where the real Paul Anka has a job, and the dog Paul Anka was giving a
concert in Luke’s apartment. Real Paul Anka was on Babette’s lap but notices dog Paul Anka staring at him from outside.

"Real Paul Anka walking toward Dog Paul Anka, Dog Paul Anka toward Real Paul Anka. You can sense that something very bad is about to happen, when, suddenly, they meet in the street and bam! An other-worldly white light engulfs the whole town and there’s a loud explosion, two barks, and everything goes dark!"
And then she woke up. Weirdness.

- Why didn’t Lane move back to the apartment too?

- Did Rory come home to escape Logan?
- Is Mrs. Kim open to Zack marrying Lane now? Was that because of how sad she saw Lane was?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
Paris and Rory are chowing down on all the Chinese food Paris had ordered prior to Rory just showing up. Paris suggests they paint the apartment, a new color scheme for a new era. Paris says she’s glad Rory is back; Rory apologizes for the whole editor thing. Paris realizes she’s not cut out to work with people, and is sorry for throwing Rory out.
Logan comes knocking at the door, and Paris greets him as "New Haven’s favorite whorehound." Paris does all the talking to Logan, despite his pleas to speak with Rory. Paris says to him all the things she’s always wanted to say; Rory nods along behind her. Logan bursts in and insists on talking. He’s not the only man to come back though - Doyle walks in, still wearing Rory’s coat.

Lorelai warns Luke, in advance, that Chris will be at Rory’s "Young Voices in Journalism" panel at Yale. He’s ok with that.
Lane has an ad for "Drummer Available" with her photo on it. She misses playing in a band. Lane is using April’s pens, and Lorelai asks how things are going with April. Apparently Lane plays games with April when things are slow. Lane and Lorelai share stories of how Rory played as a kid and how April plays.

- What do you think of Lorelai’s booth game idea? Would you pay $1 to have a dog tell your fortune?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
The church bells start to chime at 3:12am, waking up Luke & Lorelai and probably the rest of Stars Hollow. Someone outside is yelling "Town Meeting" and Lorelai drags Luke out of bed to attend. The town has filled the town hall in their PJs. Kirk sets up a monitor and turns it own - Taylor is broadcasting an urgent notice from a remote location. Where a kid named Timmy is throwing ping-pong balls at Taylor’s head.

The annual Stars Hollow Winter Carnival is this weekend and he is snowed in at his sister’s in Maine. He’s always run this carnival, and Stars Hollow has never cancelled a carnival of any sort. Miss Patty asks Kirk to do it and problem solved. Easier than Taylor expected. The town empties out while Taylor continues to leave instructions.

Recap & Discussion
Discussion Questions:
- Do you think street names can help with tourism?
- Why didn’t Richard tell Emily about seeing Lorelai?
- Do you think Taylor should have edited the street names to remove any offensive ones? And do you think there were as many streets in 1779 as there are now?
- The Birkin Bag has a huge wait list and is hard to get - does Logan giving it to Rory signify his serious feelings for her?
- Was Taylor avoiding Lorelai, or does he love the street name?
- Is Richard trying to ask Logan if Rory has plans to return to Yale? Or about Rory & Logan getting serious?
- Did Taylor give Lorelai bad street names on purpose?
- Emily used to drop heavy hints about Rory and Logan getting married, so why does she now insist it’s too early for Rory to think of marriage?
- What significance does Emily attach to the Birkin bag?
- Why is Emily sending stuff to Lorelai?
- Does Taylor dislike Lorelai? He seems to be mean and petty to her quite often.
- Is Emily trying to coerce Lorelai to coming to the house?
- Should Lorelai have just paid the fine?
- Why is Emily pushing to get rid of the dollhouse?
- Why does Rory tell Logan she loves him? Do you think Logan loves her back?
- Why is Lorelai donating all the stuff from Emily instead of selling it?
- Do you think Richard went behind Emily’s back to give back the dollhouse? Why?
- Why does Richard go to Lorelai to talk about Rory, not to Emily? Does Emily seem too proud of Rory at the DAR to see what else she could be?
Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:
It’s a town meeting and Taylor has staged a skit about the Stars Hollow from 1779 with Kirk and Andrew playing the parts of the residents. 1779 is the year Stars Hollow was founded, and the point of the skit is how the street names have changed since that time. Taylor wants to revert the Stars Hollow street names to what they used to be.
Taylor says their tourism revenue has gone down, while the revenue in neighboring towns has gone up. Why? They are highlighting their historical charm. Changing street names will cost money, but Taylor says it would be an investment. Gypsy is not fond of printing new business cards, but Lorelai thinks it would be cool. One of his less disastrous ideas to get tourism to Stars Hollow.

"Aw, poor thing. She’s single."
Lorelai gets a call from a frantic Sookie yelling that the stove at the Inn is on fire. It’s out now, but the wall behind the stove is damaged. Lorelai worries that she’s a fire starter. Luke takes her to the Inn.
