Lorelai’s Song is TVs Greatest Karaoke Moment
July 9, 2009 by Arieanna
BuddyTV has put together another list that references Gilmore Girls, though this time their list is better ordered than the Coolest TV Dads one! The post outlines “Five Great Moments in TV Karaoke” and references, as of course it must, Lorelai’s performance on Gilmore Girls.
- "I Will Always Love You," Gilmore Girls
- "One Way or Another," Veronica Mars
- "Bust a Move," One Tree Hill
- "Don’t Stop Believin’," Family Guy
- "Afternoon Delight," Arrested Development
As the article notes, it’s a “heartbreaking performance” by Lauren Graham that should have been Emmy-worthy. Though Lorelai begins by singing the song for Rory, when Luke comes in… everything changes, and the lyrics take on a whole new meaning as she tries to get through finishing her song. As the article concludes:
“Tell me it isn’t some of the best acting you’ve ever seen… It’s great vocally and one-of-a-kind emotionally, making it not only TV’s greatest karaoke moments, but one of the best scenes on television in the past 20 years.”
Here is Lorelai singing “I Will Always Love You” on Gilmore Girls:

Luke & Lorelai Married on Twitter
June 23, 2009 by Arieanna
For many months now, the world of Stars Hollow has been brought to life on Twitter. Some Gilmore Girls fans decided to adopt the personas of various Gilmore Girls characters, sending daily updates about their lives. The big happening this weekend - Luke & Lorelai were married (on Twitter)!
In this Twitter-based-fan-fiction, you could find the whole GG cast talking about the wedding between LukeDanes and LorelaiG by following this search: #lukeandlorelaiwedding. There were tweets that didn’t make it into the hashtag, but if you follow the links from the search to everyone’s Twitter profiles, you can read up some more.

Lane’s Baby Shower: The Details
June 22, 2009 by Arieanna
In ‘Will You Be My Lorelai Gilmore?‘, Gilmore Girls re-captured my attention with a classic Stars Hollow episode. And, more than that, what I now consider the “perfect” baby shower. Ok, despite the fact that Rory has to run off to New York for her interview with the New York Times, and despite the fact that Lane has to be wheeled to the party in her bed, it comes off perfectly!
So, let’s take a look at the ‘ingredients’ that went into creating this perfect baby shower for Lane:
- All the Stars Hollow friends are there - a mix of young & old, man & woman
- Decorating the onesies at the "Onesies Painting Station"!! They then get hung up to dry on a clothesline and become part of the decor!
- Lots of music, including Zack singing a lullaby while a big cake with candles is wheeled out
- Over-the-top decor: streamers & balloons, banners, storks, co-ordinating fabrics and ribbons, twinkle lights, a big sign outside with "Lane & Zack’s Baby Shower"
- Fab little gift bags for all the guests with tiny blue soaps
- Pictures of Lane & Zack from their wedding with computer-morphed images of what their babies could look like
- A collage of photos from when Lane was growing up
- A "How big is Lane’s stomach" guessing contest
- Lots of themed food - chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with blue icing, candy pacifiers, fruits & veggies, punch, etc.

Alexis Bledel Says Rory Was Too Perfect
June 19, 2009 by Arieanna
In an interview published this week, Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) talks about her upcoming film, Post Grad, and about her experience portraying Rory on Gilmore Girls.
Alexis shares a few tidbits about the relevancy of the film today, but is quickly asked about how she wanted to make Ryden different from Gilmore Girls’ Rory. In comparing the two characters, Alexis says:
“Well, as the years went by on Gilmore Girls, I noticed that Rory was kind of like an idealized product of the show’s imagination because she was really perfect in a lot of ways, which started to annoy me a bit, but you have to keep playing the character. But Ryden -– I think she’s much more relatable in a lot of ways and this character’s story picks up in the same stage of life where Rory left off, graduating from college. So for anyone who likes the show, its kind of -– it’s a continuation in a way, but she’s a completely different girl because she makes a lot of mistakes. She has a very typical college experience. She’s kind of an average girl, and I can relate much more to her.”
I have to agree with Alexis here and I think that Season 6 and 7 of Gilmore Girls suffer from this perfection. It’s not just limited to the character of Rory, though. I think all the characters became too perfectly coiffed, with things that came too easily to them (relationships aside). Many of us bonded with Gilmore Girls because the characters were realistic - they ran out of clothes, they were late to class, they made mistakes. That realism was lost as the series progressed (in my opinion). I always thought that Alexis seemed the most disconnected from this perfect-Rory, so it’s nice to hear Alexis talk about it.

ABC Family to Air “Backstage Special”
June 3, 2009 by Arieanna
Prior to starting in on Season 7 (yes, 7, not 8 - darn misleading ads!), ABC Family will be airing the Gilmore Girls Backstage Special on Friday June 5th at 5pm and again on June 8th at 11am.
The 2004 special was hosted by Brooke Burke and has the cast sharing their favorite moments over the first 3 seasons of Gilmore Girls. Here’s Lauren Graham talking with Scott Patterson in their backstage special interview:
Thanks Regis!
Lorelai & Emily are Memorable Moms
May 10, 2009 by Arieanna
BuzzSugar is running a quiz today in honor of Mother’s Day about Memorable TV Moms. Moms that may not be perfect, but who are altogether the most treasured moms on television.
The quiz features some Gilmore Girls trivia, including the show as one of the options in questions 1, 4. It’s a pretty easy quiz for Gilmore Girls fans, though the other questions may stump you!
So, while we’re on the topic, what do you think made Emily & Lorelai stand out as “Memorable Moms” on tv?

Two Mentions of Gilmore Girls
May 5, 2009 by Arieanna
INC magazine recently put together a list of “memorable fictional entrepreneurs“, including in that list Lorelai and Sookie from Gilmore Girls. They’re dropped in at #16 for opening their Dragonfly Inn in Stars Hollow, behind other characters as varied from Willy Wonka to Jerry Maguire. Entrepreneurship is something we’ve talked about before, and is a big part of Gilmore Girls. Here’s a video from the opening of the Dragonfly:
The EW also recently posted all about how they loved Gilmore Girls in Season 1. And really, I have to agree. You can’t compare the first 5 seasons of the series to the last 2 seasons - and Season 1 was just the best. You can check out their love for the episode, ‘Rory’s Dance‘, here. And here’s a video from ‘Rory’s Dance’:
Welcome to Gilmore Girls
March 14, 2009 by Arieanna
Wow, this takes me back. When I was writing the piece about the ‘real’ Stars Hollow, I got to revisit the ‘Welcome to the Gilmore Girls‘ feature that’s a part of the Season 1 DVD. It explores the creation of Gilmore Girls and its initial casting. With interviews and commentary by the actors and by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, it’s a great reminder of the wit and charm that won us over as forever fans of Gilmore Girls. Enjoy!
And isn’t it great to look back and see how the casting choices went? I don’t think this show would have taken off without its cast - from Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel to each beloved character brought to life by the talent behind its actors - Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann, Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson and the dozens upon dozens of others.
And aren’t you glad there was a Luke and not a Daisy?
Oh gosh, and seeing Alex Borstein’s screen test as Sookie? I’m sure it would have been great, but I can’t imagine anyone other than Melissa McCarthy as our Sookie!
The Gilmore Girls Companion
March 9, 2009 by Arieanna
A former editor for USA Today, A.S. Berman, has put together a new book about Gilmore Girls. Berman, who has written other insider books about television and film, is releasing ‘The Gilmore Girls Companion‘ in July, 2009. The book gives an unauthorized behind-the-scenes look at the series; it will include interviews as well as insights into each episode of Gilmore Girls.

According to the author, he chose to write about Gilmore Girls because it was a “groundbreaking show that remains an important cultural experience for many fans around the world.” Berman was driven to know what went on behind the scenes of Gilmore Girls and what the actors thought of their experiences. Hopefully the final result gives us all some of that insight!
You can pre-order ‘The Gilmore Girls Companion’ here for $19.95.
The Truth Behind “The Life and Death Brigade”
March 9, 2009 by Arieanna
The secret Yale club on Gilmore Girls, the one Rory follows into the forest for ‘You Jump, I Jump, Jack‘, is loosely based on a couple of real secret societies at Yale and Oxford.
The Life and Death Brigade is loosely based on Skull and Bones, a secret society at Yale that was founded in 1832. Skull and Bones, sometimes known as The Brotherhood of Death, may have had some early inspiration from the notorious Illuminati. Like The Life and Death Brigade, the Skull and Bones group is said to meet regularly and to have a private island for gatherings. Such gatherings would include elegant catered meals.
The motto of Skull and Bones was ‘Bari Quippe Boni’, Latin for ‘Nature makes only a few who are good.’ In Gilmore Girls, The Life and Death Brigade’s motto was ‘In omnia paratus’, which means ‘ready for anything.’
Other people think that the Life and Death Brigade is more loosely based off of a different club, the Dangerous Sports Club at Oxford, rather than Skull and Bones at Yale. This club pursues adventures and extreme sports, something we know was very popular on Gilmore Girls and which landed Logan in the hospital. This club invented modern day bungee jumping, making the first public jump from a bridge in England. Like the Skull and Bones society and the fictional Life and Death Brigade, the Dangerous Sports Club was for the elite. Members were often seen at social gatherings in top hats and drinking champagne.
