Sally Struthers in “Defying Inequality” Benefit

February 21, 2009 by Arieanna

Broadway is just full of Gilmore Girls actresses right now! There’s Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) in Guys and Dolls plus Kelly Bishop (Emily on Gilmore Girls) and Emily Bergl (Chilton’s elite Francie Jarvis in Gilmore Girls) in Becky Shaw. Now one more actress is making her way to the stage!

Sally Struthers (Babette on Gilmore Girls), who recently completed a theatrical tour with Nunsense, will take part in a one-night benefit event on Broadway. Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert — A Celebrity Benefit for Equal Rights will take place on Monday, February 23rd at 8pm at The Gershwin Theatre in NYC.

The event will benefit five charitable organizations working to promote equality and to protect civil rights for the gay and lesbian community. The evening will be filled with a star-studded line-up. The main draw for the night is the Broadway debut of Prop 8 - The Musical. It’s not clear if Sally Struthers will be a part of this musical (my guess) or just one of the many celebrity guests there to support the event.

Sally Struthers in “TaleSpin”

January 9, 2009 by Arieanna

Did you know that Sally Struthers (Babette on Gilmore Girls) did the voice of Rebecca ‘Becky’ Cunningham the in Disney’s animated series TaleSpin? She played Becky for the 7 episodes she appeared in the series, which lasted for 30 episodes on the Disney Channel.

TaleSpin was a half-hour animated series that first aired in 1990. It was based on characters adapted from The Jungle Book, particularly that of Baloo (Ed Gilbert), the hot-shot pilot of the series. The series centered on the adventures of Baloo, whose air cargo freight business is purchased by Rebecca Cunningham (Sally Struthers). Rebecca was portrayed as a petite brown bear, but one with quite a temper when it comes to Baloo’s laziness.

Sally Struthers in “Nunsense”

November 7, 2008 by Arieanna

Sally Struthers (Babette on Gilmore Girls) keeps very busy with her theater projects, the latest of which is Nunsense. Nunsense is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a national tour, with its next stop tomorrow at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora.

Nunsense is a musical comedy written by Dan Goggin - the original production was inspired by a line of greeting cards. The original production ran off-Broadway in 1985, where it lasted for 3,672 performances - the second-longest off-Broadway show in history! The show is an International sensation with more than 6,000 productions worldwide.

The story of Nunsense follows 5 Little Sisters of Hoboken who had run missionary leper colony in France. The story revolves around one of their number accidentally killing 52 nuns of the convent with tainted food. Mother Superior (Sally Struthers) then has a vision to start a greeting card company to raise money for the burials.

Mother Superior then spends part of the money they earn on the cards to buy a VCR, and they are left without funds to bury 4 of the deceased. So the next idea is to hold a variety show, with acts from a variety of comedic nuns. The play has evolved over the years, and Dan Goggin personalized the Mother Superior role in this anniversary tour just for Sally. There are some lines that refer back to her time on All in the Family, for example.

Sally has been enjoying the part immensely:

“It’s a great show. It’s a real creative pleasure. There are six other women in this show, and they all deserve to be household names like me.”

She goes on to say that acting the show is like a “two-hour-long variety show with all of us wearing nuns’ habits,” in this dark comedy play. The variety show sounds like a lot of fun, and gets a lot of laughs at the end of the night.

The Nunsense tour started in September and runs through January - you can view a list of the cities on tour here.

Sally Struthers in “Sheldon & Mrs. Levine”

November 1, 2007 by Arieanna

Sally Struthers has joined the cast of the new comedic play "Sheldon & Mrs. Levin". Sally comes in to replace Penny Marshall, who left due to illness.

Sall Struthers takes on the role of the ‘overbearing mother’ to the son seen above. The play will continue through to November 18 in Burbank at the Falcon Theatre.

Sheldon & Mrs. Levine, according to press notes, "is the story of an ultra possessive mother and her 31 year-old neurotic runaway son told through their exchange of outrageous and dysfunctional letters. In this love-hate relationship, Sheldon (Jeff Marlow) blames his mother, Mrs. Levine (Sally Struthers), for breaking up his marriage and ruining his life. His domineering mother can’t understand why something so trivial should bother her ungrateful son. Travel the globe and share in the angst, aggravation, madness and mail of a mother and son, who although thousands of miles apart, are still too close to each other for their own good."

Behind Babette

June 19, 2006 by Arieanna

To us, she’s Babette. But Sally Struthers (57), aside from a long history in acting starting with ‘All in the Family’, has so much more to offer. Things you don’t know about Babette - the purpose of thise post.

Sally Struthers is a woman who lives for others. She is widely known as someone who puts charity first, finding spornsors for Third World kids.

"That’s the best feeling in the world," she says by telephone from her Los Angeles home. "Any time anybody approaches me and says, ‘You’ve had a lovely career and made us laugh, but, what we’re really coming over and saying hello to you for is all the work you’ve done for the children. That makes me feel great."

Sally places more value on her time than on her money, and freely gives of both. She learned the wonderful ways of charity from her grandmother, who helped children through the Lutheran Church. She started giving to children as soon as she had the means. And has now been visiting Third World countries to give of her charity for 30 years. Unfortunately she got hepatitis on one of her trips - the worst of it, to her, is that this now prevents her from giving blood and eventually organs to those in need.

"Now that I look back, I cannot believe how much I put myself in harm’s way," she says. "I woke up one day, three or four years ago, and said, ‘I’ll go anywhere they want in the United States. I’ll make a speech for them, I’ll make more public service announcements, but I’ve had my fill of Third World countries."

Sally - thank you for your good works, your big heart, and your funny ways!
